Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN IN THE DARK

Claire looked different.

Her hair had been cut short.

No makeup.

Dark jacket.

Mud on her shoes.

But her eyes were the same.

Calm.

Watching.

Measuring Ethan.

He tightened his grip on the fireplace poker.

“Where’s Lily?”

Claire asked.

“You’ll never see her again.”

Pain crossed Claire’s face.

Maybe real.

Maybe another performance.

“Don’t say that.”

“You broke into my sister’s house.”

“I needed to talk to you.”

“Police stations have phones.”

“You wouldn’t listen.”

“You drugged my daughter.”

“I kept her calm.”

“You lied about her recovery.”

“I protected our family.”

“There is no our family.”

Claire flinched.

Upstairs, a floorboard creaked.

Claire looked toward the sound.

Ethan moved.

“Don’t.”

She looked back.

“I would never hurt Lily.”

“You already did.”

“I took care of her.”

“You abused her.”

“I bathed her.”

“You punished her.”

“I carried her when you couldn’t.”

“You made her afraid to walk.”

Claire’s composure fractured.

“Because you would have ruined it.”

Ethan stared.

“Ruined what?”

“She needed time.”

“Time for what?”

“To get stronger.”

“With secret medication?”

“That wasn’t supposed to continue.”

“Then why did it?”

Claire stepped closer.

“Because she kept asking to tell you.”

Ethan’s hand tightened around the poker.

“And?”

“And I knew what you would do.”

“What?”

“You’d make recovery everything.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You don’t know me.”

“I lived with you for three years.”

“You studied me for three years.”

Claire’s face hardened.

“Rachel studied me.”

The name changed everything.

“You killed her.”

Claire’s eyes flashed.

“No.”

“You chased her.”

“I wanted her to stop.”

“In a storm.”

“She refused to pull over.”

“So you forced her.”

“I didn’t touch her car.”

“You followed her until she crashed.”

Claire swallowed.

“She panicked.”

Ethan stared.

“You blame Rachel?”

“No.”

“You just did.”

“I made a mistake.”

“A mistake?”

His voice rose.

“She died.”

“I know.”

“My daughter spent three years in a wheelchair.”

“I KNOW.”

Claire’s shout echoed through the house.

Silence followed.

Upstairs, Lily heard everything.

Ethan knew it.

Claire knew it too.

Her voice softened.

“I know.”

She began crying.

“I saw the car go over.”

Ethan felt sick.

“I stopped.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“You climbed down.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“To help them?”

Silence.

“To help them?”

“I thought Rachel was dead.”

“She was.”

“I saw Lily.”

“And?”

“She was awake.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“You opened her door.”

“Yes.”

“You told her she didn’t see you.”

Claire’s face changed.

“She remembers that?”

“She remembers your perfume.”

Claire wiped her face.

“I panicked.”

“You left a six-year-old child injured in a crashed car.”

“I called 911.”

“After you stole Rachel’s recorder.”

Claire said nothing.

There it was.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

Silence.

“You went down there for evidence.”

“I went down because I didn’t know what to do.”

“You took the recorder.”

“Yes.”

“You left my daughter.”

“I called for help.”

“Then you came back into our lives.”

Claire cried harder.

“I wanted to know what Lily remembered.”

Ethan’s stomach turned.

“At least you admit it.”

“At first.”

“What?”

“At first that’s why.”

She looked toward the stairs.

“Then I loved her.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You don’t get to use that word.”

“You think I planned everything?”

“You planned enough.”

“I didn’t plan you.”

“What does that mean?”

“I didn’t expect you.”

Claire wiped her cheeks.

“I expected a grieving husband who barely noticed me.”

“That’s exactly what you found.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I found someone kind.”

Ethan said nothing.

“You thanked me.”

“Don’t.”

“You trusted me.”

“Don’t.”

“You made me feel…”

“What?”

“Like I could be someone else.”

Ethan stared.

“You could have been.”

Claire looked at him.

“You could have walked into a police station.”

Her face collapsed.

“You could have told me the truth.”

“I would have lost everything.”

“You lost everything anyway.”

Footsteps sounded outside.

Police.

Claire heard them.

Her eyes widened.

Ethan saw the moment she understood.

“You called them.”

“My sister’s security system has a silent alarm.”

Claire stepped backward.

“No.”

“Claire.”

“No.”

“Stay where you are.”

She turned toward the stairs.

Ethan blocked her.

“Move.”

“No.”

“I just want to see Lily.”

“Never.”

“Ethan.”

“No.”

She reached into her jacket.

Ethan raised the poker.

“Hands where I can see them.”

Claire pulled out a phone.

Not a weapon.

She held it up.

“There’s something you need.”

“What?”

“A recording.”

“Put the phone down.”

“Rachel.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

“She called me from the car.”

Police shouted outside.

Claire unlocked the phone.

“I kept it.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

She pressed play.

Rachel’s voice filled the dark hallway.

“Claire, stop following me.”

Ethan’s knees weakened.

Claire’s recorded voice answered.

“Pull over.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

“I understand exactly what you did.”

“Rachel.”

“I sent copies.”

Claire’s face in the present drained of color.

On the recording, Claire screamed.

“To who?”

Rachel answered.

“To someone you can’t reach.”

The audio filled with rain.

Tires.

A horn.

Then Rachel shouted one final sentence.

“Lily, hold on!”

A terrible sound followed.

Metal.

Glass.

Then silence.

Ethan felt the room vanish around him.

Claire stopped the recording.

“That proves you chased her.”

“I know.”

“Why keep it?”

“I listened to it.”

Ethan looked at her with horror.

“For three years?”

Claire nodded.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Police pounded on the door.

“Sheriff’s department!”

Claire looked toward the stairs.

“Let me say goodbye to Lily.”

“No.”

“Please.”

“No.”

“I love her.”

A small voice came from above.

“No, you don’t.”

Everyone froze.

Lily sat at the top of the stairs in her wheelchair.

Megan stood behind her.

Claire’s face crumpled.

“Lily.”

Lily looked down at her.

“You said Dad would stop loving me.”

Claire shook her head.

“I was scared.”

“You said I was broken.”

“No.”

“You did.”

“I was trying to—”

“You sprayed me with water.”

Claire began crying.

“I’m sorry.”

“You always said sorry didn’t matter if I kept doing the same bad thing.”

Claire had no answer.

Lily gripped the chair arms.

Then she did something nobody expected.

She locked the brakes.

Placed both feet on the floor.

And stood.

Megan reached toward her.

Lily whispered, “I’m okay.”

She stood at the top of the stairs.

Shaking.

Weak.

But upright.

Claire covered her mouth.

Lily looked down at the woman who had spent years teaching her to hide.

“I’m not keeping your secret anymore.”

Police entered through the front door.

Claire did not run.

May you like

For the first time, she had nowhere left to go.
