Chapter 15 - A MOTHER’S BARGAIN

The flight back to New York was the longest seven hours of Elena’s life.

She did not sleep.

Neither did Matteo.

Sofia’s empty travel crib sat in the rear cabin.

Nobody had intended that cruelty.

It simply happened to be there.

Elena stared at it until Matteo ordered it removed.

At one point he sat across from her.

No jacket.

Bandaged knuckles.

Eyes hollow.

“If this fails…”

“It won’t.”

“If it does.”

Elena looked at him.

“Then we fail together.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Matteo.”

“You walk away if anything changes.”

“So do you.”

“I cannot.”

“Then don’t ask me.”

He stared.

“You are impossible.”

“Marco agreed.”

That silenced him.

Then something unexpected happened.

Matteo laughed.

Quietly.

Painfully.

“He would hate me.”

“Yes.”

“You answered too quickly.”

“I’m grieving, not dishonest.”

His smile faded.

“I wish I had met him differently.”

“So do I.”

The plane descended over New York before dawn.

Pier Fourteen sat along a neglected industrial stretch of Staten Island.

Fog covered the water.

The Saint Helena waited offshore.

Too far to reach quickly.

Close enough to see.

Mercer had chosen well.

Agent Keene positioned teams outside the perimeter.

Elena wore no visible wire.

Only the false documents.

And a small emergency transmitter sewn into the lining of her coat.

Matteo was supposed to remain two blocks away.

He lasted eleven minutes.

Elena was not surprised.

Mercer appeared beside a warehouse door.

Alone.

Apparently.

Elena knew better.

“Where is Sofia?”

“Safe.”

“Show me.”

Mercer held up a tablet.

Live video.

Sofia asleep inside a small cabin.

Elena’s chest tightened.

She looked healthy.

No visible injury.

A woman sat beside her.

Dr. Beck.

Elena went cold.

“You.”

The doctor looked at the camera.

Ashamed.

“Dr. Beck?”

No response.

Mercer lowered the screen.

“He was very cooperative once he understood his wife’s treatment depended on it.”

Elena stared at him.

“You weaponize dying people.”

“I weaponize need.”

“That sounds uglier.”

“It is more accurate.”

“Documents.”

He held out his hand.

Elena did not move.

“My signature happens after Sofia is physically in front of me.”

“No.”

“Then we’re done.”

She turned.

Mercer smiled.

“You won’t leave.”

Elena kept walking.

“Because you care too much.”

She stopped.

He had the arrogance of someone who thought love made other people predictable.

Maybe that had always been his mistake.

Elena turned back.

“You killed my children.”

Mercer’s expression barely changed.

“I killed Marco.”

“My sons died because of you.”

“Yes.”

“Say their names.”

He frowned.

“What?”

“Noah and Eli.”

Silence.

“Say them.”

Mercer sighed.

“Noah and Eli.”

Elena’s eyes burned.

“Good.”

“Why?”

“So when you go to prison, you remember who ended you.”

His smile vanished.

A gun pressed against Elena’s spine from behind.

Mercer nodded toward the warehouse.

“Inside.”

She obeyed.

The transmitter remained active.

She hoped.

Inside, six men waited.

No Matteo.

Good.

For once he had listened.

Mercer searched her.

Found nothing.

The transmitter stayed hidden.

They transferred Elena onto a small boat.

The Saint Helena grew larger through the fog.

Mercer sat opposite her.

“You know Matteo will come.”

“Yes.”

“That is why I brought you.”

“So I’m bait.”

“You are leverage.”

“Men like you love different words for cowardice.”

His face tightened.

“You think you understand power.”

“No.”

Elena looked at the water.

“I understand babies.”

Mercer laughed.

“That is not power.”

“It was enough to change Matteo.”

That stopped him.

“Did it?”

“Yes.”

“Men like Matteo don’t change.”

“Maybe.”

Elena looked back.

“But they choose.”

Mercer’s eyes hardened.

“He will choose violence.”

“We’ll see.”

They reached the ship.

Elena was taken below deck.

Sofia’s cry reached her before the cabin door opened.

Elena almost collapsed.

“Sofia.”

The baby turned.

Then screamed.

Reached.

Elena took her.

Held her.

Kissed her hair.

“Oh, sweetheart.”

Sofia buried her face against Elena.

Her body shook.

Elena’s milk let down painfully.

She did not care.

Mercer watched.

“You see?”

Elena whispered.

“See what?”

“She remembers safety.”

Mercer rolled his eyes.

“Sign.”

He placed documents on the table.

Elena read them.

False papers mixed among real ones.

Clever.

She signed the first fake document.

Then the second.

Stalling.

Dr. Beck stood nearby.

Elena looked at him.

“How is your wife?”

His face crumpled.

“She died yesterday.”

The room went silent.

Even Mercer looked irritated.

Elena understood instantly.

“Then he has nothing left to threaten you with.”

Beck stared.

Mercer’s face hardened.

“Doctor.”

Beck looked at Sofia.

Then at Elena.

Something changed.

He moved.

Fast.

Not toward Mercer.

Toward the cabin door.

He slammed it shut and locked it.

Mercer shouted.

Beck shoved a cabinet against it.

“Go!”

Elena stared.

“Where?”

“Maintenance corridor.”

He pulled open a narrow hatch.

Sofia cried.

Gunfire exploded outside.

Matteo.

Of course.

Elena almost laughed.

“You said he’d choose violence.”

Beck whispered.

“He did.”

“Apparently.”

They crawled into the corridor.

Sofia pressed against Elena’s chest.

The ship alarm sounded.

Boots pounded overhead.

Elena crawled through darkness.

Then Beck stopped.

“There.”

A ladder.

They climbed.

The hatch opened onto the rear deck.

Fog.

Water.

Chaos.

Agent Keene’s teams boarded from two sides.

Mercer’s men scattered.

Then Mercer appeared behind Elena.

He grabbed Sofia.

Elena screamed.

“No!”

Mercer pulled the baby from her arms.

Sofia wailed.

Elena lunged.

A gun pressed to Sofia’s side.

Elena froze.

Across the deck, Matteo appeared.

His weapon lifted.

Then dropped immediately.

Mercer smiled.

“There he is.”

Matteo’s face was deathly calm.

“Give me my daughter.”

“Documents first.”

“They’re invalid.”

Mercer’s smile disappeared.

Elena almost smiled.

“We lied.”

Mercer looked at her.

Rage twisted his face.

“You stupid—”

Sofia screamed.

Matteo took one step.

Mercer raised the gun.

“Stop.”

He stopped.

Mercer backed toward the edge of the ship.

Sofia cried harder.

Elena watched his grip.

Watched the baby.

Watched Matteo.

Then she saw something Mercer did not.

Sofia was doing what hungry, frightened babies did.

Rooting.

Turning.

Fighting his hold.

Her small body twisted suddenly.

Mercer looked down.

That one second was enough.

Dr. Beck struck his wrist.

The gun fell.

Elena lunged for Sofia.

Matteo tackled Mercer.

Keene shouted.

Men swarmed the deck.

Elena fell to her knees clutching the baby.

Sofia screamed against her chest.

Alive.

Alive.

Alive.

Elena sobbed.

“I’ve got you.”

Behind her, Matteo had Mercer beneath him.

His fist rose.

Once.

Twice.

Mercer’s face turned bloody.

Matteo reached for the fallen weapon.

Elena looked up.

“Matteo.”

He did not hear.

She stood.

“Matteo!”

His hand closed around the gun.

He aimed it at Mercer.

The entire deck froze.

Keene did not move.

She knew one wrong step could end everything.

Mercer smiled through blood.

“There.”

He whispered.

“That is who you are.”

Matteo’s finger tightened.

Elena held Sofia closer.

“Look at her.”

He did not.

“Matteo.”

Slowly, his eyes moved toward his daughter.

Sofia was crying.

Reaching toward him.

One tiny hand.

Matteo stared.

Mercer laughed.

“Do it.”

Matteo’s weapon lowered slightly.

“Do it.”

Mercer repeated.

Matteo looked at Elena.

She said nothing.

This choice had to be his.

Nadia’s letter.

Marco’s recording.

Sofia’s hand.

Everything converged.

Matteo lowered the gun.

Agent Keene moved instantly.

Mercer was restrained.

Matteo stood.

He looked almost sick.

Then Sofia reached again.

He crossed the deck.

Elena placed his daughter in his arms.

May you like

Matteo buried his face against Sofia’s head.

And for the first time, Elena saw him cry without turning away.
