Chapter 13 - THE HOTEL NADIA LEFT BEHIND

Rome should have felt beautiful.

Instead, Elena saw exits.

Cameras.

Vehicles parked too long.

People whose hands stayed inside coats.

Grief and fear had retrained her eyes.

The Grand Aurelia stood near the Tiber.

Old stone.

Gold balconies.

A courtyard filled with lemon trees.

Nadia’s family had owned it for generations.

Mercer had reserved Elena the presidential suite.

Under her real name.

Three weeks before Marco died.

That fact bothered everyone.

“He knew I would take this trip.”

Elena said.

Agent Keene nodded.

“Your sister bought the original ticket.”

“But she bought it two months after the funeral.”

“Mercer appears to have manipulated the travel offer that reached her.”

Elena stared.

“He engineered my vacation?”

“Possibly.”

Matteo looked furious.

“Why?”

Keene answered.

“To bring Elena to property tied to Nadia.”

They searched the suite.

Nothing.

Then Elena noticed a painting.

A bluebird.

Of course.

She almost laughed.

“Nadia had a theme.”

Matteo looked toward the painting.

“My wife enjoyed being dramatic.”

Elena approached.

The frame was old.

Behind it, taped to the backing, was an envelope.

Her name was written on the front.

ELENA ROSSI.

Inside was a keycard.

And one sentence.

IF MARCO FAILED, GO BELOW THE WINE CELLAR.

Matteo looked at Elena.

“She really trusted you.”

“She trusted Marco’s judgment.”

“That was stronger.”

Elena did not answer.

They went below the cellar at midnight.

A hidden archive lay behind an old stone wall.

Inside were boxes.

Records.

Photographs.

Hard drives.

And a crib.

Elena stopped.

“What is that?”

Matteo went pale.

He recognized it.

“Sofia’s.”

“Why is it here?”

“Nadia brought her to Rome when she was six weeks old.”

Elena examined the crib.

Beneath the mattress was another envelope.

This one addressed to Matteo.

He opened it.

My love,

If you are reading this, then you are angry.

You are always angry when you are afraid.

Elena looked at him.

“That sounds accurate.”

Matteo ignored her.

He continued reading silently.

His face slowly changed.

“What?”

Elena asked.

He handed her the letter.

Nadia explained everything.

She had discovered Mercer’s network more than a year earlier.

She planned to expose him.

But she also discovered something else.

Matteo’s father had secretly financed the network at its beginning.

Not for criminal gain.

For political leverage.

Mercer inherited it.

Expanded it.

Turned blackmail into an empire.

Matteo’s father had known.

Viktor had known pieces.

Nadia had spent years trying to dismantle it quietly.

Marco became her outside auditor.

Dmitri became an accidental witness.

Matteo had been deliberately kept ignorant.

Because Nadia feared exactly what happened whenever Matteo felt betrayed.

He attacked.

He destroyed.

He asked questions afterward.

The letter ended differently.

If Sofia survives this, do not teach her that fear is respect.

Do not teach her that love means possession.

Do not lock the people you love inside your protection until they cannot breathe.

If Elena is with you, listen when she asks to leave.

If she stays, make sure it is because you gave her a door.

Matteo read that paragraph twice.

Elena watched him.

He folded the letter carefully.

“My wife is bullying me from the grave.”

“She seems excellent.”

A sound came from behind them.

A gun being cocked.

Matteo pushed Elena behind him.

Mercer stood at the entrance.

No expensive legal office.

No charity smile.

Just a tired sixty-year-old man holding a pistol.

Two armed men flanked him.

Agent Keene was nowhere visible.

Matteo’s guards had been separated upstairs.

Mercer smiled.

“Nadia always did enjoy letters.”

Matteo’s voice turned cold.

“You murdered her.”

“Yes.”

No denial.

No speech.

The simplicity was worse.

Elena stepped slightly to the side.

“And Marco?”

Mercer looked at her.

“Complicated man.”

“You killed him.”

“Yes.”

Her hands went numb.

“My sons.”

A pause.

Mercer’s expression changed.

Not remorse.

Annoyance.

“They were not part of the plan.”

Elena felt something inside her go perfectly still.

“That is what everyone keeps saying.”

Mercer lowered the weapon slightly.

“I am sorry for them.”

“No, you’re not.”

“No.”

“At least you learned honesty.”

Mercer smiled.

“I understand why Marco loved you.”

Matteo moved.

The weapon lifted.

“Don’t.”

Mercer warned.

Matteo stopped.

“What do you want?”

“The trust documents.”

“You have access already.”

“Not without Elena.”

Mercer looked at her.

“Nadia made her too important.”

Elena laughed quietly.

“That must be frustrating.”

“You have no idea.”

“What do you need me to sign?”

Matteo turned.

“Elena.”

She ignored him.

Mercer smiled.

“Several things.”

“And then?”

“You disappear.”

“Meaning die.”

“Eventually.”

Matteo’s body tightened.

Mercer aimed the weapon toward him.

“Careful.”

Elena looked at the hidden archive.

Old wine racks.

Stone walls.

No obvious exit.

Then she noticed a small red light beneath a shelf.

Security sensor.

Nadia had built this room.

Nadia distrusted everyone.

There had to be another way out.

Elena moved casually toward the crib.

Mercer tracked her.

“What are you doing?”

“Sofia slept here.”

“Yes.”

“You watched her?”

“No.”

“Nadia knew you were dangerous.”

“She understood me better than Matteo did.”

“That must have made you arrogant.”

Mercer’s smile faded.

“You are stalling.”

“Yes.”

Matteo looked at her.

She looked downward.

Once.

His eyes followed.

The red light.

He understood.

Mercer did not.

Elena pressed her hand beneath the crib rail.

A switch clicked.

The wine rack behind Mercer opened.

Agent Keene appeared with a weapon raised.

“Federal police!”

Everything exploded.

Mercer fired.

Matteo slammed Elena to the floor.

Keene returned fire.

One of Mercer’s men fell.

The second ran.

Mercer disappeared through the opening.

Matteo started after him.

Elena grabbed his sleeve.

“No.”

“He’s getting away.”

“That is what he wants.”

Matteo stared.

“Listen to Nadia.”

Those words stopped him.

Not the command.

The name.

Matteo stayed.

Agent Keene shouted into her radio.

Police flooded the cellar minutes later.

Mercer escaped into Rome.

But Elena had something he had not realized she took.

During the chaos, his coat brushed the crib.

A phone fell from his pocket.

Now it sat in Agent Keene’s evidence bag.

And on the lock screen was a photograph of Sofia.

Taken that morning.

At the secure house in New York.

Matteo stared.

“He still has someone inside.”

“Yes.”

Elena whispered.

Then the phone received a message.

Three words.
