Chapter 7 - What Tom Claimed Happened

Police surrounded Margaret Warren’s home within minutes.

Tom did not resist.

He sat at the kitchen island drinking coffee as though he had been expecting them.

David entered behind Morales.

Tom looked exhausted.

A cut ran along his forehead.

His shirt was stained with dried blood.

“You have some explaining to do,” David said.

Tom looked at him.

“So do you.”

David lunged.

Cole stopped him.

“David!”

“You put cameras in my son’s room?”

“No.”

“You built that space.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Tom’s admission shocked everyone.

Morales cuffed him.

“Start talking.”

Tom looked at David.

“Sarah asked me to build it.”

David laughed once.

A broken, angry sound.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“She discovered Dad had hidden documents inside the old service walls when he owned the house. After we renovated, she asked me to preserve one access section.”

“Why?”

“She wanted somewhere to hide evidence.”

Morales said, “Evidence against you.”

Tom nodded.

“Yes.”

David stared at him.

“You’re admitting you stole from the company?”

Tom closed his eyes.

“I moved money.”

“Eleven million dollars?”

“I was trying to cover something Dad started.”

“What?”

“Illegal land deals. Bribes. Projects built with contaminated materials. When Dad died, I inherited half the mess.”

“You could’ve told me.”

“And destroyed the company? Sent hundreds of people home?”

“You stole.”

“I hid losses.”

“That is stealing!”

Morales cut in.

“What about Sarah?”

Tom’s face changed.

“She found the accounts.”

“So you threatened her.”

“I was angry.”

“You told a pregnant woman accidents happen.”

Tom looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

David surged again.

“You son of a—”

“But I didn’t kill her!”

Tom shouted so loudly Margaret started crying.

“I swear to God, David, I did not kill Sarah.”

“What about Kessler?”

Tom’s jaw tightened.

“I paid him.”

David went still.

“For what?”

“To keep quiet about something.”

“What?”

Tom stared at Margaret.

Their mother looked away.

David noticed.

“Mom?”

Margaret began shaking.

Tom said, “Tell him.”

She whispered, “Not here.”

“Tell me what?”

Margaret started crying harder.

“Your father wasn’t well before he died.”

David frowned.

“That has nothing to do with Sarah.”

“Yes, it does.”

Tom slammed his cuffed hands against the counter.

“Just tell him!”

Margaret looked at David.

“Your father had another child.”

The room went silent.

David stared.

“What?”

“A son.”

“When?”

“Before you were born.”

“Who?”

Margaret’s lips trembled.

“Alan Kessler.”

David’s face went blank.

Dr. Kessler.

Sarah’s doctor.

“Alan is my brother?”

“Half brother.”

David stepped backward.

Everything tilted.

Tom continued.

“Dad secretly supported him for years. When Sarah started looking into the company, she discovered payments that went back decades.”

David struggled to breathe.

“So you paid Kessler because…”

“He threatened to expose Dad’s old crimes and our family connection.”

Morales watched Tom closely.

“And Sarah?”

Tom looked at David.

“Sarah found out.”

“She confronted him?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Two days before she went into labor.”

David’s mouth went dry.

Tom leaned forward.

“She told me she believed Kessler was going to hurt her.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I thought she was scared. I thought she was overreacting.”

David stared at him with pure hatred.

Tom’s eyes filled.

“I know.”

Morales interrupted.

“Where is Dr. Kessler now?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why was Marcus Bell’s blood in your hotel room?”

Tom’s face hardened.

“He found me.”

“What happened?”

“He had evidence against Kessler.”

“What evidence?”

Tom looked toward the window.

Then back at David.

“A video from the hospital.”

Everyone froze.

“What was on it?” David asked.

May you like

Tom swallowed.

“Sarah was still alive after Kessler told you she was dead.”
