Chapter 4 - Grace Comes Back

The police located Grace Miller that afternoon.

She refused to speak on the phone.

“I’ll only tell you in person,” she said.

Morales arranged to meet her at the station.

Grace walked into the interview room wearing an oversized sweatshirt despite the warm September weather.

She looked exhausted.

David sat across from her.

“You could have told me.”

Grace’s eyes filled.

“I tried.”

“When?”

“The night I quit.”

“You said nothing happened.”

“Because he was standing outside.”

David went still.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

Morales leaned forward.

“Tell us from the beginning.”

Grace twisted a tissue between her fingers.

Her third night babysitting Ethan, she had heard singing through the nursery wall.

She assumed David had left a speaker inside.

A week later, she heard breathing.

“Breathing?”

“Right behind the wall.”

Grace started crying.

“I put Ethan in my car and drove around for two hours because I was too scared to stay in the house.”

“Why didn’t you call police?”

“I thought I was losing my mind.”

Then one night, while Ethan slept, Grace saw a tiny flash of red light inside the air vent.

She removed the vent cover.

Behind it was a camera lens.

The next morning, she planned to tell David.

But when she reached her apartment after work, an envelope was taped to her door.

Inside were photographs of her sleeping.

David stared at her.

“Someone had been inside your apartment?”

Grace nodded.

“And there was a note.”

“What did it say?”

She reached into her purse.

“I kept it.”

Morales unfolded the paper with gloves.

YOU SAW NOTHING IN THE WARREN HOUSE.

Grace wiped tears from her cheeks.

“I quit the next morning.”

“Did you ever see whoever was watching?” Cole asked.

“Once.”

Everyone leaned forward.

“I was walking to my car after midnight. There was a man across the street.”

“Can you identify him?”

“He wore a cap.”

“Height?”

“Maybe six feet.”

“Anything else?”

Grace looked at David.

“He walked like you.”

David frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“The way he holds his shoulders. The way he turns his head.”

She swallowed.

“For half a second, I thought it was you.”

David felt cold.

Tom looked like him.

Same dark hair.

Similar build.

Same father.

Morales showed Grace a photograph of Tom.

Her reaction came instantly.

Her hand covered her mouth.

“That’s him.”

“You’re sure?”

“I think so.”

Then she pointed to something beside Tom in the photograph.

“Wait.”

The photo had been taken at Sarah’s funeral.

Tom stood beside David.

Behind them was another man.

Gray suit.

Silver hair.

Thin glasses.

Grace tapped the image.

“Him.”

David looked up.

“What about him?”

“I saw him too.”

“Where?”

“In your house.”

David stared at the photograph.

“That’s Dr. Alan Kessler.”

Morales wrote the name down.

“Who is he?”

David’s mouth went dry.

“He was Sarah’s obstetrician.”

May you like

Nobody spoke.

“He was there the night she died.”
