Chapter 5 - THE OFFICIAL VERSION

By eight o’clock that night, Roosevelt Middle School had already changed the story.

Mr. Ortiz learned that when his phone buzzed during dinner.

His wife, Elena, was across the table.

“You going to eat that?”

He looked down at his untouched chicken.

“Eventually.”

“You’ve said eventually for twenty minutes.”

The phone buzzed again.

An email.

Subject: INCIDENT COMMUNICATION.

He opened it.

Elena watched his face.

“What?”

Mr. Ortiz read silently.

Then again.

The school’s message to families described “an unfortunate classroom incident involving two students and the misuse of art materials.”

No mention of Maisie being ordered to cut her hair.

No mention of Ms. Kendrick.

No mention of the video.

The statement said a student had “attempted to remove material from her own hair using classroom scissors before staff intervention.”

Mr. Ortiz put the phone down.

“They’re blaming the kid.”

Elena’s expression darkened.

“Do you have proof?”

He looked at her.

She immediately understood.

“The video.”

“The video.”

“Then why are you surprised?”

“Because I thought Danner would at least wait a day before lying.”

Elena leaned back.

“You going to work tomorrow?”

“He told me to.”

“You sure?”

“No.”

At 8:17, another email arrived.

This one was only for Mr. Ortiz.

MANDATORY ADMINISTRATIVE MEETING — 7:30 A.M.

At 8:22, Daniel Parker texted.

The school sent us a written incident report.

It says Maisie chose to cut her own hair.

Mr. Ortiz stared at the message.

Then another appeared.

Do not delete that recording.

Mr. Ortiz typed back.

I won’t.

He set the phone down.

It buzzed again.

Unknown number.

He almost ignored it.

Then answered.

“Hello?”

A girl whispered, “Mr. Ortiz?”

“Yes?”

“It’s Ava.”

He recognized the name.

Ava Reynolds. Sixth grader. Red sneakers every day. Quiet kid. Sat two seats behind Maisie.

“What are you doing calling me?”

“My mom doesn’t know.”

“You shouldn’t be calling school employees secretly.”

“I know. But they’re lying.”

Mr. Ortiz sat straighter.

Elena noticed.

“What did you see?” he asked.

Ava’s breathing shook through the speaker.

“Madison put the glue in Maisie’s hair.”

“Did you tell anyone?”

“Ms. Kendrick.”

Mr. Ortiz glanced toward Elena.

“And?”

“She told me to stay out of it.”

His stomach tightened.

“Were other students there?”

“Yeah.”

“How many?”

“Five. Maybe six.”

“Then why is the school saying nobody knows what happened?”

Ava went quiet.

“Ava?”

“When Mr. Danner came in later, he talked to Madison alone.”

“What did he say?”

“I couldn’t hear everything.”

“What did you hear?”

A long pause.

Then:

“He told her not to worry.”

Mr. Ortiz gripped the phone.

Ava whispered one final sentence.

“And, Mr. Ortiz?”

“Yeah?”

May you like

“I recorded Madison too.”
