Chapter 3 - THE OFFICE DOOR

Mr. Ortiz did not delete the video.
And thirty minutes later, he was sitting outside Principal Danner’s office wondering if that decision had just cost him his job.
Maisie sat beside him.
A school nurse had cleaned the sticky residue from what remained of her hair, but nothing could hide the damage.
One side reached her chest.
The other barely reached her jaw.
She kept touching it, as if her fingers expected the missing hair to reappear.
Mr. Ortiz looked over.
“You want some water?”
She shook her head.
“Want me to call your dad?”
Her face tightened.
“They already did.”
“You scared?”
Maisie shrugged.
That was twelve-year-old language for yes.
“My dad learned how to braid because of my mom,” she said.
Mr. Ortiz didn’t interrupt.
“She used to do it every morning. Even when she was sick.”
Her voice became smaller.
“After she died, Dad watched videos online until he learned.”
Mr. Ortiz looked at the floor.
Now he understood why the teacher’s comment had hurt so much.
Maisie pulled one ragged strand forward.
“He’s going to see this and think I let somebody ruin it.”
“He won’t.”
“You don’t know my dad.”
“No.”
Mr. Ortiz paused.
“But I know parents can tell the difference between something a kid did and something that was done to them.”
The office door opened.
Principal Danner stepped out.
“Mr. Ortiz. Inside.”
“What about Maisie?”
“Ms. Webb is handling her.”
“I’d rather stay until her father gets here.”
“That wasn’t a request.”
Mr. Ortiz stood.
“Neither was mine.”
Danner’s nostrils flared.
“Inside. Now.”
Mr. Ortiz entered.
Danner shut the door.
Ms. Kendrick was already sitting there.
Her arms were folded tightly against her chest.
Danner took his chair behind the desk.
“Carlos, I’m going to give you one opportunity to make this simple.”
Mr. Ortiz remained standing.
“My name is Miguel.”
Danner blinked.
After nine years.
“Fine. Miguel. You recorded a staff member without permission.”
“I recorded a student in distress.”
“You recorded inside a classroom.”
“Through a hallway window.”
Ms. Kendrick shook her head.
“This is ridiculous.”
Mr. Ortiz looked at her.
“What part?”
“The entire accusation that I forced Maisie to cut her hair.”
“I heard you tell her to cut it.”
“She had adhesive in it.”
“Put there by another student.”
“Allegedly.”
Mr. Ortiz leaned forward.
“You told her nobody would believe her over Madison.”
Ms. Kendrick went still.
Danner looked at her.
“You said that?”
She opened her mouth.
Closed it.
Then Danner turned back to Ortiz.
“Show me the video.”
“No.”
“We need it for the investigation.”
“Then I’ll email a copy.”
“I need the phone.”
“You don’t.”
Danner’s professional smile vanished.
“You are a custodian, Miguel.”
Mr. Ortiz felt the words beneath the words.
Know your place.
He slowly sat down.
“And?”
“You are not trained to investigate teachers.”
“No. I’m trained to clean up messes.”
Danner stared.
Mr. Ortiz continued.
“And right now I’m looking at one.”
The office door suddenly opened.
A man stood there, breathing hard.
Maisie was behind him.
Mr. Ortiz knew immediately.
Her father.
Daniel Parker looked at his daughter’s hair.
Then at Ms. Kendrick.
Then at the scissors sealed in a plastic evidence bag on Danner’s desk.
His face drained of color.
“Who,” he said quietly, “did this to my child?”
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked at Maisie.
“Honey?”
Maisie’s lower lip trembled.
She pointed at Ms. Kendrick.
And said:
May you like
“She made me cut it.”
