Chapter 6 - The Price of Silence

The recovered photograph showed more than I'd remembered.
Much more.
Priya displayed a copy on a monitor in Sofia's conference room.
I sat beside Grace, my attorney.
Noah stood near the back.
Sofia had already informed the appropriate internal investigators and outside counsel that potentially relevant evidence existed.
The original digital files were being preserved separately.
Nobody wanted to contaminate evidence by passing it around carelessly.
Priya enlarged the photograph.
There was the spreadsheet.
Rows of payments.
Consulting companies.
Approval dates.
And a partially visible message window.
Richard Calloway's name appeared at the top.
The message itself was short.
Ryan, the next release cannot go through the normal channel.
Below it, Ryan had typed a reply.
Then Whitman needs to sign before the review.
I stared.
"That's what I saw."
Noah leaned forward.
"Can you enlarge the last line?"
Priya did.
Another message appeared.
He won't sign if he knows what we're transferring.
Sofia slowly removed her glasses.
Nobody spoke.
Then she said, "We need to notify the outside investigative team immediately."
I turned toward Noah.
"Is this enough to prove anything?"
"It shows a communication we need to investigate.
Not the entire scheme."
"Then what happens?"
Sofia closed the image.
"We preserve the evidence, identify the underlying transactions, and let the investigators establish what happened."
I thought that would be the beginning of relief.
Instead, it was the beginning of something worse.
Because Ryan started fighting back.
By the following evening, screenshots appeared online accusing me of abandoning my marriage for Noah Whitman.
A photograph from the airplane circulated beside a wedding picture of Ryan and me.
Someone had cropped Lily out of one image and enlarged her face in another.
The comments were vicious.
Ryan posted a long statement claiming I was experiencing an emotional crisis.
He said he loved his wife.
He said he was worried about our daughter.
He said he hoped I would accept help.
Thousands of strangers praised him.
Some called me selfish.
Others called me a gold digger.
A few threatened to find out where I was staying.
I turned off my phone.
Then I went into the bathroom and cried.
Not because I believed them.
Because Ryan had always known exactly how to make his version of events sound believable.
When I came out, Noah was waiting in the living room.
He didn't ask whether I'd seen the posts.
He could tell.
"I should leave," I said.
"Why?"
"Because he's doing this to hurt you."
"He's doing it to control you."
"Your company is already having problems."
"My company's problems existed before we met."
I looked at him.
"People think we're having an affair."
"People think lots of things."
"Doesn't it bother you?"
He considered the question.
"It bothers me that your daughter is being used to punish you."
I swallowed.
"That's not what I asked."
He looked directly at me.
"No.
I don't care whether strangers believe I've fallen in love with someone."
The words hung between us.
My heartbeat changed.
Noah seemed to realize what he'd said.
He looked toward the window.
"I mean that my private life has been misunderstood for years."
I nodded.
"Right."
Neither of us spoke.
Then Lily woke from her nap and began calling for me.
The moment passed.
But it didn't disappear.
That night, Grace called.
"Ryan has filed a petition in Texas."
I sat down.
"What kind?"
"He's seeking temporary custody orders."
My throat closed.
"He wants Lily?"
"He's asking the court to place her with him while the case proceeds."
"Based on what?"
"He claims you're refusing contact and exposing the child to unsafe circumstances."
I stared at the wall.
"Unsafe circumstances?"
"He's pointing to the media attention surrounding Noah."
I couldn't believe it.
Ryan had arranged to track us at an airport, threatened to take Lily, and publicly exposed her image.
Now he was claiming I had put her in danger.
Grace continued.
"Our Texas co-counsel is preparing a response.
We also need to address the threatening communications."
"Will I have to go back?"
"Possibly for proceedings.
We'll discuss the safest legal strategy."
I looked at Lily playing with her stacking rings.
For a moment, I felt exactly as I'd felt outside our locked apartment.
Powerless.
Then I remembered my mother's letter.
The truth doesn't become less true because someone powerful dislikes it.
I lifted my chin.
"Tell me what you need."
Grace paused.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"I'm ready to fight for my daughter."
The next morning, another problem appeared.
Sofia called Noah just after six.
I heard his voice through the open kitchen doorway.
"What do you mean the board has scheduled a vote?"
A pause.
"Under whose authority?"
Another pause.
"Richard Calloway."
Noah went silent.
When he entered the living room, his expression was grim.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Calloway has convinced several directors that I'm compromising the company's reputation."
"Because of me?"
"That's the excuse."
"What does he want?"
"An emergency vote to remove me as chairman."
I stared.
"Can he do that?"
"He can try."
He sat opposite me.
For the first time, I saw genuine exhaustion in his face.
Then he said something I wasn't expecting.
"Emily, there's a possibility Calloway and your husband have been working toward this for months."
I frowned.
"Why?"
"Because removing me would give Calloway more freedom to conceal what happened."
I thought of Ryan's messages.
The money.
The tracking.
The attempted custody maneuver.
And suddenly, it fit together.
"They don't just want to silence me," I whispered.
Noah watched me.
"What do you think they want?"
I looked at him.
"They want to make me look unreliable before anyone hears what I know."
He nodded slowly.
"Exactly."
Then his phone buzzed.
He looked down.
His expression changed.
"Emily."
"What?"
"Someone has sent me an offer."
"From who?"
"An attorney representing Ryan."
My stomach twisted.
"What offer?"
Noah looked at the message again.
"They'll withdraw the allegations against you and stop the public attacks."
I waited.
"In exchange for what?"
May you like
Noah raised his eyes.
"For the recovered photograph."
