Chapter 11 - The Hearing in Austin

The Texas courthouse looked exactly as it had in my nightmares.
Gray walls.
Fluorescent lights.
People waiting on benches with folders clutched against their chests.
I arrived with Grace and our Texas counsel, Rebecca Ortiz.
Lily remained in Chicago with Aunt Diane, who had come to stay temporarily in a secure apartment arranged independently with my attorneys.
I hated leaving my daughter.
But Rebecca explained that bringing her into a contentious hearing wasn't necessary.
Noah didn't attend.
We'd agreed it was better that way.
He'd offered support, transportation, and anything else I needed.
But the case was mine.
And for the first time, I wanted to stand on my own.
When I entered the courtroom, Ryan was already there.
He wore a navy suit.
His hair was neatly styled.
He looked rested.
Healthy.
Concerned.
The exact version of himself he wanted the world to see.
When he noticed me, his expression softened.
"Emily."
I stopped.
"Ryan."
He took a step forward.
"I've been so worried."
Rebecca moved beside me.
"Please direct communications through counsel."
Ryan looked wounded.
"She's my wife."
Rebecca's expression didn't change.
"And this is a pending legal matter."
Ryan looked at me again.
For a fraction of a second, his mask slipped.
His eyes hardened.
Then he smiled.
"Of course."
Inside the courtroom, everything moved slowly.
There were preliminary arguments.
Questions about jurisdiction.
Discussion of temporary orders.
Ryan's attorney described me as emotionally unstable.
He claimed I'd left Texas impulsively.
He claimed I was refusing to cooperate.
He suggested I'd placed Lily near a wealthy stranger for financial advantage.
I sat perfectly still.
Rebecca presented the documented threats.
The airport incident report.
The voicemail.
The evidence that Ryan had changed the locks and restricted financial access.
She explained that no prior custody order had prohibited the trip.
She also argued that Ryan's alleged use of tracking and intimidation required serious consideration.
Ryan's attorney objected repeatedly.
The judge, Elena Ramirez, listened carefully.
Then came Ryan's testimony.
He described himself as a devoted father.
He said he adored Lily.
He said he had supported me through a difficult period.
At one point, he wiped his eyes.
"I just want my little girl safe."
My stomach twisted.
Rebecca began her questions.
"Mr. Collins, did you change the locks on the marital apartment?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"My wife had become unpredictable."
"Did you provide her with a working key?"
"I intended to."
"Did you?"
Ryan hesitated.
"Not immediately."
"Did you prevent her from accessing household funds?"
"I temporarily limited access for financial safety."
"Whose safety?"
"Ours."
Rebecca showed him a text.
You get nothing until you learn to behave.
"Did you send this message?"
Ryan stared at it.
"Yes, but it was taken out of context."
"What context makes access to money conditional on your wife's behavior?"
Ryan shifted in his seat.
"I was trying to calm her down."
Rebecca moved on.
"Did you hire Curtis Hale?"
Ryan blinked.
"Who?"
"Curtis Hale."
"I know someone by that name."
"Did you employ him?"
"Occasionally."
"For what purpose?"
"Business matters."
"Did those business matters include monitoring your wife's movements?"
Ryan looked toward his attorney.
"I don't recall."
Rebecca presented the airport incident documentation.
"Mr. Collins, do you deny that Mr. Hale was waiting at O'Hare when your wife and daughter arrived?"
"I have no personal knowledge of that."
"Did you know your wife's flight number?"
Ryan hesitated.
"I may have."
"How?"
"She could have told me."
"Did she?"
"I don't remember."
Rebecca waited.
Then she asked, "Did you leave a voicemail threatening that neither Emily nor Mr. Whitman would see Lily again?"
Ryan's expression changed.
"That's not what I meant."
"Did you say those words?"
"I was emotional."
"Did you say them?"
Ryan looked down.
"Yes."
My eyes filled.
Not because he'd admitted it.
Because for the first time, someone had made him answer a question without allowing him to change the subject.
The judge called a short recess.
I stepped into the hallway.
My legs were shaking.
Rebecca touched my shoulder.
"You're doing well."
I nodded.
Then I saw Ryan approaching.
His attorney was several steps behind him.
"Emily."
I froze.
He stopped a few feet away.
"Can we talk?"
Rebecca immediately said, "Not without counsel."
Ryan ignored her.
"Please."
He looked at me with those familiar blue eyes.
The eyes I'd once loved.
"Come home."
My chest tightened.
"Ryan."
"We can fix this."
I almost laughed.
"You locked me out."
"I made mistakes."
"You threatened our daughter."
"I was upset."
"You used my identity."
His face changed.
"What?"
I watched him carefully.
"The accounts.
The documents.
The money."
His expression went completely still.
Then he stepped closer.
Rebecca moved between us.
"That's enough."
Ryan looked over her shoulder.
His voice dropped.
"You have no idea what you've gotten yourself into."
I stared at him.
For three years, those words would have silenced me.
This time, they didn't.
"Then explain it."
His jaw tightened.
"You think Whitman can protect you?"
I didn't answer.
"You think he cares about you?"
Rebecca called for courthouse security.
Ryan stepped back.
But before he turned away, he whispered something only I could hear.
"Ask your billionaire why he was really on that flight."
I felt cold.
"What?"
Ryan smiled.
Then he walked away.
Back inside the courtroom, Judge Ramirez issued temporary orders after considering the evidence presented.
Lily would remain in my care while the parties completed further proceedings.
Ryan's contact with her would be addressed through a supervised arrangement pending additional assessment.
The judge also ordered both parties to preserve relevant records and avoid harassment.
It wasn't a final victory.
But when Rebecca squeezed my hand, I started crying.
For the first time, Ryan hadn't gotten everything he demanded.
Outside the courthouse, my phone rang.
Noah.
"Emily?"
I smiled through my tears.
"Hi."
"How did it go?"
"Lily stays with me."
He exhaled.
"Thank God."
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I remembered Ryan's last words.
"Noah?"
"Yes?"
"Why were you on that flight?"
Silence.
Not long.
But long enough.
I closed my eyes.
"Please don't lie to me."
He took a breath.
"Emily, there's something I need to tell you."
My heart sank.
"What?"
"I wasn't supposed to be flying commercial that day."
"Then why were you?"
He hesitated.
"Because someone sent me information about Richard Calloway.
And that information led me to Austin."
I stopped walking.
"What information?"
May you like
Noah answered quietly.
"Your husband's name."
