Chapter 8 - The Red Ledger

"Touch me and you better make sure you write down the child abuse charges first," Clara snapped, stepping back against the wall, her eyes blazing like wild fire.
"Clara Miller, don't make this difficult," Deputy Miller said sternly, stepping closer. "Mr. Vance is the legal, sole custodial parent according to Colorado Family Court docket 4402. You have zero legal custody."
"He was freezing to death on their patio!" Clara shouted, pointing toward the trauma bay doors. "Go in there! Look at his core temperature! Look at the bruised ring imprint on his cheek that matches the four-carat diamond on his new wife's finger!"
The hospital intake nurse, an older woman named Martha with thirty years on the trauma floor, stepped out from behind the desk, her arms crossed firmly across her scrubs.
"Hold on, Deputy," Martha interrupted, her voice like cold steel. "That toddler just arrived in severe secondary hypothermia. If that boy had stayed out five more minutes, we’d be putting him in a body bag. That's not a custody dispute; that's an active attempted murder investigation. You touch this mother before Dr. Patel speaks to CPS, and I will have the hospital board file federal obstruction charges against your entire precinct."
Richard stepped forward, his eyes narrowing. "Do you know who I am, nurse? I sit on the county budget committee. My foundation donated the very MRI machine in wing B."
"And you could buy the entire building for all I care, Mr. Vance," Martha said without blinking. "Inside these doors, the only authority that matters is medical protocol. Child Protective Services has already been auto-flagged by our system."
Richard's face twitched. For the first time, a hairline fracture appeared in his polished mask of confidence. He turned to his lawyer, who was frantically typing on an iPad.
"Richard," the attorney whispered, leaning in. "Evelyn is on the phone. She said the house security cameras... they upload directly to the cloud server."
Richard froze. His jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched violently under his ear.
"What did you just say?" Richard hissed under his breath.

"The smart-home cameras on the back patio," the lawyer muttered, pale-faced. "Evelyn forgot to disable the continuous rolling cloud backup after she fired the maid this morning. If the footage synced..."
Cliffhanger: Across the room, Clara watched Richard's sudden shift in posture, and a cold, savage smile crept across her bruised face. "You forgot about the security feed, didn't you, Richard?"
