Chapter 11 - Scars Beneath the Cotton

"Doctor, you need to see this right now," Nurse Sarah whispered, her fingers shaking as she held back the hem of Leo’s flannel shirt.

Dr. Patel stepped over to the examination table. His jaw locked.

Beneath the wet, cold fabric, the toddler’s tiny back was a map of systematic, horrific abuse. Parallel rows of thin, faded purple bruises crisscrossed his shoulder blades—marks left by the stiff leather strap of an expensive designer handbag. Near his lower spine was a circular burn scar the exact diameter of a curling iron barrel, half-healed and hidden beneath medicated foundation that was now washing away under the warm IV fluids.

Clara, allowed into the room the moment Leo was stabilized, took one look and choked on her own breath. The world seemed to tilt beneath her boots.

"She covered it with makeup," Clara rasped, the horror constricting her throat like an iron band. "Every time I had my court-ordered weekend visits, Evelyn insisted on dressing him in high-neck turtlenecks. She told me Leo had sensitive skin... eczema..."

"These aren't skin conditions, Mrs. Miller," Dr. Patel said grimly, reaching for the digital forensic camera. "This is chronic, calculated, long-term battery. This child has been tortured in that house for at least six months."

Through the glass partition, Richard Vance was being pushed toward the exit by Deputy Miller. His eyes drifted into the trauma bay and caught the horrific sight of his son’s exposed back under the harsh fluorescent lights.

Richard stopped dead in his tracks. The arrogance that had coated his face for four years melted into raw, hollow shock. "What... what is that?"

"Don't play dumb, Vance," the deputy growled, shoving him forward toward the automatic sliding doors. "You lived under the same roof."

"I didn't... I didn't know!" Richard stammered, his voice rising in high-pitched, pathetic panic as the silver cuffs dug into his wrists. "I travel for business! Evelyn took care of him! I swear to God, I never saw that!"

"Save it for the grand jury, Richard," Clara’s voice cut through the corridor like a butcher’s blade.

She walked to the doorway of the trauma room, her gaze piercing right through her ex-husband. "You didn't see it because you didn't care to look. As long as she played the smiling socialite on your arm at your charity galas, you didn't give a damn what was happening to our son."

Cliffhanger: Before Richard could reply, the hospital's entrance doors burst open again, admitting two state troopers escorting a woman in handcuffs whose white fur coat was splattered with mud and shattered glass: Evelyn.
