Chapter 16 - The Names They Could Not Allow to Speak

Thomas survived.

The bullet passed through his shoulder.

Police placed him under armed guard.

The shooter escaped.

But the attack proved Thomas right about one thing.

Gideon's network did not depend on Gideon being free.

The archive contained crimes.

The witness list contained people who could prove them.

Living people.

Caroline was one.

Mom was another.

Evelyn had become one.

Bianca too.

Detective Chen contacted federal authorities outside Massachusetts.

A joint task force formed quietly.

Samuel Hart's archive was duplicated and distributed to several secure locations.

No single fire, theft, or murder could erase it now.

That decision changed the enemy's strategy.

They began targeting witnesses.

A vehicle followed Mom's transport.

A nurse attempted to enter Caroline's room using false credentials.

Someone sent Bianca a photograph of her apartment from across the street.

And Anna disappeared.

The woman who had discovered the veil.

The housemaid who began everything.

She failed to return home one evening.

Her phone was found beside the Blackwood service road.

I blamed myself.

Evelyn did not.

"Anna pulled the veil," she said.

"That made her important."

"She shouldn't be important."

"But she is."

We searched Blackwood again.

Every tunnel.

Every chamber.

Every outbuilding.

No Anna.

Then Bianca found something.

A tiny strip of paper inside the vacuum cleaner.

Anna had taped it beneath the dust compartment.

Three words.

I SAW THOMAS.

Dated one week before Evelyn was found.

Anna had known my father was alive before any of us.

"Why didn't she tell me?" I asked.

Bianca looked at the paper.

"Maybe she tried."

We searched Anna's messages.

One unsent draft addressed to me:

Mr. Mercer, I saw someone in the west hall last night who looked exactly like your father.

I know that sounds impossible.

I did not send this because Miss Bianca told me grief can make people imagine familiar faces.

Bianca went pale.

"I don't remember saying that."

"She names you."

"I said something similar years ago.

Not last week."

Someone had impersonated Bianca.

Or Anna had been manipulated.

Detective Chen examined security logs.

On that date, Bianca's key card entered Blackwood at 11:42 p.m.

But Bianca had been at a charity dinner in Boston.

Hundreds of witnesses.

Someone duplicated her access.

Inside Anna's apartment, police found a hidden envelope.

Photographs of Thomas entering Blackwood multiple times.

Anna had been documenting him.

One photo showed him carrying food toward the bridal suite.

So Thomas had supplied Evelyn directly.

Bianca was not her only keeper.

The final photograph showed Thomas meeting someone in the garden.

A woman.

Face turned partly away.

Detective Chen enlarged the image.

Mom whispered, "No."

"What?" I asked.

She pointed.

"That's Rachel."

Rachel Shaw.

Gideon's wife.

The woman everyone believed died decades ago.

Caroline stared at the image for a long time.

"She's older.

But yes."

Another dead woman alive.

Our family had lost the right to be surprised.

If Rachel lived, Gideon's entire history changed.

Maybe he had not killed her.

Maybe Thomas had helped her disappear.

Or maybe she had been part of something bigger.

Gideon refused to speak when shown the photograph.

For the first time since his arrest, however, his composure broke.

"Where did you get that?"

Detective Chen smiled.

"So she's alive."

Gideon slammed both hands against the table.

"Where is she?"

His reaction seemed genuine.

He had not known.

Rachel had hidden from her own husband for nearly thirty years.

Mom stared through the observation glass.

"She was the one who sent me the first evidence."

"When?"

"After I escaped Blackwood.

Anonymous packages arrived for years.

I always suspected Caroline."

Caroline shook her head.

"Not me."

Rachel had been feeding evidence to Mom.

Watching Blackwood.

Perhaps watching Gideon too.

"What does she want?" I asked.

Evelyn answered.

"Maybe the same thing we do."

"Which is?"

"To finish it."

Then my phone rang.

Anna's number.

I answered immediately.

"Anna?"

A woman spoke.

Not Anna.

Older.

Calm.

"You found my photograph."

Everyone in the room froze.

"Rachel?"

"Yes."

"Where is Anna?"

"Safe."

"Prove it."

Anna came on the line.

"Mr. Mercer?"

My knees weakened.

"Anna.

Are you hurt?"

"No.

I'm sorry.

I went willingly."

I frowned.

"What?"

Rachel returned.

"Anna found me first.

She understood police attention would expose my location."

"Why take her?"

"She came to warn me Thomas was searching."

"Where are you?"

"That depends."

"On what?"

"Whether you're ready to hear the part none of your parents will tell you."

I looked at Mom.

"What part?"

Rachel said, "The reason Thomas Mercer chose Blackwood House before you were born."

I waited.

"The tunnels were never just useful."

Her voice lowered.

"He was looking for something buried there."

"What?"

"The first ledger.

The one Gideon didn't create."

I felt cold.

"Who did?"

May you like

Rachel's answer opened a history older than all of us.

"Your grandfather."
