Chapter 11 - THE YACHT PARTY ENDS

Dad never made it to his press conference.
At 8:10 the next morning, two investigators arrived at Carter Coastal Imports.
Nobody arrested him.
Not yet.
But cameras caught him being escorted inside.
By noon, his victim story had changed.
The local headline now read:
QUESTIONS RAISED OVER FAMILY TRUST FUNDS.
Madison called me screaming.
“Reporters are outside my condo!”
“Welcome to consequences.”
“They’re asking about the yacht!”
“They should.”
“What am I supposed to say?”
“The truth would be a fun experiment.”
She hung up.
Thirty minutes later, she called again.
This time she was crying.
“The marina says the yacht is under court restriction.”
“Yes.”
“They won’t let me move it.”
“Yes.”
“Emily!”
I closed my eyes.
“What do you want me to do?”
“It’s my boat!”
“No, Madison.”
My voice stayed calm.
“It never was.”
She went silent.
Meanwhile, investigators located Noah’s guardian, Grace’s aunt, Linda.
Daniel arranged a call.
Linda looked exhausted.
She had worked two jobs raising Noah.
When Daniel explained the trust, she covered her mouth.
“You’re telling me Grace left money?”
“Her grandfather did.”
Linda began crying.
“Noah needed surgery when he was four.”
My chest tightened.
“What kind?”
“Heart surgery.”
Jake slowly sat down.
Linda had spent years paying medical debt.
She had sold her house.
Borrowed money.
Worked nights.
While Dad used Noah’s inheritance to keep his company alive.
That was the moment something inside me changed.
Until then, I wanted my money back.
Now I wanted the truth exposed.
All of it.
That afternoon, Dad’s attorney requested a family settlement meeting.
Daniel laughed when he read the offer.
“What?”
“He’s offering to restore fifty thousand to you and twenty-five to Jake.”
Jake blinked.
“They stole hundreds of thousands.”
“Yes.”
“And Noah?”
“Nothing.”
I looked at Daniel.
“Reject it.”
“Already did.”
Then he showed me Dad’s second condition.
All parties must agree never to discuss the trusts publicly.
Jake snorted.
“He’s buying silence with stolen money.”
My phone rang.
Madison again.
I nearly ignored it.
Then she texted:
PLEASE ANSWER. I FOUND SOMETHING IN MOM’S SAFE.
I answered.
“What?”
Madison was whispering.
“I’m at the house.”
“What did you find?”
“Letters.”
“What letters?”
“From Grandpa.”
My pulse jumped.
“About what?”
She started crying.
“About you.”
“What about me?”
Madison took a shaky breath.
“Emily… Mom and Dad knew about your knee before you ever called them.”
I went cold.
“How?”
“Because your doctor’s office mailed something here by mistake.”
“That doesn’t make sense.”
Then Madison said the sentence that made my blood run cold.
“They knew you needed the surgery.”
May you like
A pause.
“And Dad told Mom not to give you the money.”
