Chapter 5 - Arthur’s Letter

Daniel sat down.
The hallway around him seemed to disappear.
He kept reading.
Your mother loves this family, but somewhere along the way, love became ownership.
Daniel’s throat tightened.
Patricia reached for the letter.
He pulled it away.
“Don’t.”
“Daniel.”
“Don’t touch me.”
She stopped.
He continued reading.
Years ago, Patricia began moving money without board authorization. I confronted her. She promised it would stop. It did not.
Daniel looked up.
“You were doing this when Dad was alive?”
Patricia’s face hardened.
“He was sick. He was confused.”
Emily spoke quietly.
“He wasn’t confused.”
Patricia snapped, “You weren’t his doctor.”
“No. I was the person he asked to help him trace the money.”
Daniel turned another page.
The letter described the company’s near collapse.
Arthur had learned that Whitmore Development’s debt was worse than anyone knew.
Patricia had hidden losses.
She had borrowed against company properties to cover private investment mistakes.
When the lenders discovered it, they demanded immediate repayment.
Arthur had turned to Emily.
Not because she was his daughter-in-law.
Because she understood finance.
Daniel read the next paragraph.
Emily saved this company.
Not you.
Not me.
Emily.
If you are angry when you learn this, be angry at me. I asked her not to tell you the full truth.
Daniel stopped.
His vision blurred.
Ryan sat beside him.
“Keep going.”
Daniel swallowed.
I wanted you to learn leadership without feeling that your wife had purchased your future.
Maybe that was pride.
Maybe it was a mistake.
But Emily never asked for public credit.
She asked for one thing: that the company survive.
Daniel lowered the letter.
Emily was looking at the floor.
“Why?” he asked.
She looked up.
“Why what?”
“Why save it?”
She stared at him as if the answer should have been obvious.
“Because I loved you.”
Past tense.
It landed like a blade.
Daniel looked back down.
The final section was shorter.
If Patricia attempts to regain control, Emily has my permission—and my request—to protect the company, even from this family.
Daniel.
If you ever have to choose between your pride and the woman who stood beside you when none of us deserved it, choose carefully.
I failed to do that often enough with your mother.
Do better than I did.
Dad.
No one spoke.
Patricia finally laughed.
It sounded brittle.
“So that’s it? A dead man’s letter and suddenly Emily is a saint?”
Daniel stood.
“Dad said you stole money.”
“I moved money.”
“Without approval.”
“For this family!”
“You nearly bankrupted us!”
Patricia’s face turned red.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.”
Emily stepped between them.
“This isn’t helping.”
Patricia pointed at her.
“You stay out of this!”
Emily’s eyes sharpened.
“I stayed out of it for eight years.”
“And now you want revenge.”
“No.”
“Then why freeze accounts?”
“Because somebody moved another nine million dollars last week.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Ryan turned.
“Nine million?”
Emily nodded.
Michael opened a tablet.
“Funds were transferred from three project accounts into offshore entities.”
Patricia shook her head.
“I know nothing about that.”
Emily studied her.
“I actually believe you.”
Everyone looked at her.
Daniel frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Emily turned toward him.
“The transaction codes required executive credentials Patricia doesn’t have.”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“My credentials?”
“Yours or Ryan’s.”
Ryan stepped back.
“Not mine.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
“I didn’t transfer anything.”
Michael spoke.
“Then someone with access to your authentication token did.”
Daniel immediately reached inside his jacket.
His security token was missing.
He checked another pocket.
Then another.
Nothing.
Ryan asked, “When did you last use it?”
Daniel thought.
“Yesterday afternoon.”
“Where?”
Daniel’s stomach twisted.
“At home.”
Emily’s voice became very quiet.
“Who was there?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
He knew the answer.
Someone had been in his home office.
Someone who knew exactly where he kept sensitive documents.
Someone who had pushed harder than anyone for Emily to sign the postnuptial agreement.
Daniel opened his eyes.
“My sister.”
Emily frowned.
“Claire?”
May you like
Daniel nodded.
And just then, every light in the building went out.
