Chapter 14 - The Night the Moretti Empire Fell

The old Moretti factory looked exactly as Alexander remembered.
Red brick.
Broken windows.
A rusted loading dock.
A smokestack rising above the empty yard like a monument to something that should have ended years ago.
Rain moved through the darkness.
Alexander parked beside the main entrance at 7:58 p.m.
He stepped out carrying the document case.
His phone remained in his pocket.
The federal tracking equipment was already active.
A camera watched from a distant rooftop.
Another had been installed near the drainage tunnel.
Rebecca's team was positioned around the property.
Nobody moved.
Alexander approached the entrance.
A security light flickered on.
A voice crackled through an intercom.
"Place the case on the ground."
Alexander looked up.
"Tell Lorenzo I'm here."
"Put it down."
"No."
A pause.
Then the door unlocked.
Arthur Sloane stood inside.
His silver prosthetic hand glinted beneath the overhead light.
Alexander stopped.
"Sloane."
"Mr. Moretti."
"Where's my daughter?"
"Inside."
"Is she hurt?"
"No."
"My wife?"
"Alive."
Alexander watched him carefully.
"Why are you helping us?"
Sloane looked toward the dark corridor.
"Because I spent forty years telling myself I was only following orders."
His silver fingers clicked.
"And I finally ran out of excuses."
Alexander stepped inside.
Two guards searched him.
They took the phone from his pocket.
They examined the document case.
Then they led him down a concrete staircase.
The underground complex was larger than he'd imagined.
A corridor stretched beneath the factory.
Steel doors lined both sides.
Medical equipment hummed behind glass partitions.
Security cameras watched every intersection.
Alexander felt sick.
This wasn't a temporary hiding place.
It was an operation built to last.
At the end of the corridor stood a reinforced door.
A guard entered a code.
The lock released.
Inside was a large office furnished with antique desks and leather chairs.
A portrait of Lorenzo Moretti hung on the wall.
And beneath it sat the man himself.
"Alexander."
His father smiled.
"Welcome home."
Alexander placed the case on the table.
"Where are they?"
Lorenzo gestured toward a chair.
"Sit."
Alexander remained standing.
"Where is my family?"
Lorenzo sighed.
"You always were impatient."
He opened the case.
He examined the documents.
Then he smiled.
"Very good."
Alexander watched him.
"Release them."
Lorenzo lifted the pages.
"You've finally learned that loyalty to family matters more than personal ambition."
Alexander stared.
"You kidnapped my wife."
"She betrayed us."
"You stole my daughter."
"I protected the bloodline."
"You imprisoned my mother."
Lorenzo's expression hardened.
"Eleanor was unstable."
Alexander laughed softly.
"That's what you say whenever a woman refuses to obey you."
His father's eyes narrowed.
"Watch your tone."
"No."
Alexander stepped closer.
"For forty-three years, you told me what to think."
"You told me who to trust."
"You told me who deserved loyalty."
"And every time somebody challenged you, you called them unstable."
Lorenzo rose.
"Everything you have exists because of me."
Alexander shook his head.
"Everything I have left exists despite you."
The old man stared.
Then he smiled.
"You think your wife is innocent?"
Alexander froze.
Lorenzo opened a drawer.
He placed a photograph on the table.
Isabella stood beside Thomas Bell in an archive room.
Both were holding documents.
"She knew what she was doing."
Alexander looked at the photograph.
"She was investigating you."
"She stole company records."
"She was protecting people."
"She intended to destroy the family."
Alexander leaned forward.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"She intended to stop you."
Lorenzo's smile disappeared.
For the first time, Alexander saw something beyond anger in his father's face.
Fear.
Not of prison.
Not of death.
Of losing control.
Alexander understood.
"You don't know how to live unless everyone is afraid of you."
Lorenzo struck the table with his cane.
"Enough!"
The sound echoed through the chamber.
A side door opened.
Two guards entered.
Between them stood Isabella Moretti.
Alexander forgot how to breathe.
She wore a pale blue sweater.
Her dark hair fell just below her shoulders.
She was thinner.
There was a small scar beneath her eyebrow.
But her eyes were the same.
Those gray-green eyes.
For five years, he had dreamed of them.
Now they were looking directly at him.
"Alex?"
His knees nearly buckled.
"Isabella."
She pressed a hand against her mouth.
He took a step forward.
The guards blocked him.
Lorenzo smiled.
"Now we can proceed."
Alexander barely heard him.
"Isabella."
Tears streamed down her face.
"You're real."
He laughed through his own tears.
"So are you."
She reached toward him.
"Alex, I'm sorry."
He shook his head.
"No."
"I tried—"
"I know."
"I tried to come home."
His voice broke.
"I know."
Lorenzo struck the floor with his cane.
"Enough."
Neither looked at him.
Alexander stepped closer.
"I should have listened to you."
Isabella shook her head.
"Don't."
"I should have believed you."
"Alexander."
He looked at her.
She smiled through tears.
"You found our daughter."
He nodded.
"She's beautiful."
Isabella began crying harder.
"She has your smile."
Alexander laughed weakly.
"And your eyes."
They reached for each other.
A guard raised his arm.
Alexander looked at him.
"Touch her again and you'll regret it."
The man hesitated.
Lorenzo sighed.
"Very dramatic."
Alexander turned.
"Let them go."
His father lifted a document.
"First, Isabella signs the statement confirming that the Northbridge records are fabricated."
Isabella shook her head.
"No."
Lorenzo's face darkened.
"You have made this difficult for five years."
"And I'll make it difficult for five more."
Alexander looked at her.
Something fierce rose inside him.
Pride.
Love.
And grief for every day they'd lost.
Lorenzo turned toward the guards.
"Bring the child."
Alexander went rigid.
"Don't."
His father smiled.
"Then perhaps your wife should cooperate."
The side door opened again.
Lucy entered holding Eleanor's hand.
"Mommy!"
Isabella cried out.
"Lucia!"
The little girl broke away.
She ran toward her mother.
A guard moved to stop her.
Lorenzo raised one hand.
"Let her."
Lucy threw herself into Isabella's arms.
"Mommy!"
Isabella knelt and held her so tightly that the child disappeared against her.
Alexander stood frozen.
He had imagined this reunion.
He had prayed for it.
And now he was watching his daughter cling to the mother she'd been separated from for so much of her short life.
Lucy looked over Isabella's shoulder.
"Daddy's here."
Isabella raised her eyes.
Alexander smiled through tears.
"I'm here."
Lucy reached toward him.
"Come here."
Alexander knelt beside them.
For one brief moment, the world stopped.
He wrapped his arms around his wife and daughter.
Isabella pressed her face against his shoulder.
Lucy held both of them.
And Alexander Moretti finally understood what home meant.
Not the penthouse.
Not the mansion.
Not the company bearing his name.
Home was the woman trembling in his arms.
The child between them.
The people he'd almost lost forever.
Then Lorenzo spoke.
"Touching."
Alexander slowly lifted his head.
His father stood beside the desk.
A guard had entered through the rear door.
Something was wrong.
Alexander saw it immediately.
Arthur Sloane was missing.
The guard leaned toward Lorenzo.
"Sir, we have a security problem."
Lorenzo's face changed.
"What problem?"
The guard whispered something.
The old man turned sharply.
"Impossible."
Alexander tightened his arms around Lucy.
A distant alarm began sounding.
Then another.
Rebecca's operation had begun.
Lorenzo looked at Alexander.
"You brought the authorities."
Alexander stood.
"Yes."
His father stared.
"You betrayed me."
Alexander shook his head.
"No."
He moved Isabella and Lucy behind him.
"I finally stopped protecting you."
A loud metallic crash echoed through the corridor.
Someone shouted.
Then came the sound of running footsteps.
Lorenzo backed toward the desk.
"Seal the complex!"
A guard reached for the alarm panel.
But the screen displayed a red warning.
SECURITY OVERRIDE ACTIVE.
Lorenzo stared.
"What?"
The office door opened.
Vincent Moretti stood in the entrance.
He wore a medical brace beneath his jacket.
Two federal agents flanked him.
His face was pale.
But his voice was steady.
"It's over, Dad."
Lorenzo went completely still.
"Vincent?"
His younger son looked at Alexander.
Then at Isabella.
Finally, at Eleanor.
"Mom."
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Vincent's eyes filled.
"I'm sorry."
Lorenzo struck the floor with his cane.
"You worthless little coward!"
Vincent flinched.
For a moment, Alexander saw the old fear return.
Then Vincent straightened.
"No."
Lorenzo stared.
Vincent took another step.
"You don't get to call me that anymore."
The federal agents moved into the room.
"Federal agents!"
"Hands where we can see them!"
Lorenzo's face twisted with rage.
He reached beneath his desk.
Alexander lunged forward.
"Don't!"
A guard grabbed Lorenzo's arm.
The old man struggled.
The desk drawer opened.
Inside lay a pistol.
Lorenzo never reached it.
An agent pulled him away from the desk and restrained him.
For the first time in his life, Lorenzo Moretti was powerless.
He looked at Alexander.
"You think you've won?"
Alexander stood beside his wife.
"No."
He looked toward Eleanor.
Then Vincent.
Then Lucy.
"We're finally free."
Lorenzo laughed bitterly.
"You don't understand what comes next."
Alexander stared at him.
"What?"
His father smiled.
"Everything you've ever loved will collapse when the truth comes out."
Alexander looked around the room.
At Isabella.
At Lucy.
At his mother.
At his wounded brother.
Then he looked back.
"Then let it collapse."
Federal agents led Lorenzo toward the door.
He stopped beside Alexander.
His expression turned cold.
"You're throwing away an empire."
Alexander smiled faintly.
"No."
"I'm ending a prison."
The doors closed behind Lorenzo.
But the operation was far from over.
Mercer entered with another team.
"Alexander."
He turned.
"We found Thomas Bell."
Elena's father.
Alexander looked at Isabella.
She nodded weakly.
"He's been waiting a long time."
Mercer hesitated.
"He's alive."
Alexander exhaled.
"But there's something you need to know."
Alexander's chest tightened.
"What?"
Mercer looked toward the archive corridor.
"Thomas has been keeping a second set of records."
"Records of what?"
"Every person this operation harmed."
Alexander stared.
Mercer continued.
"Names."
"Dates."
"Payments."
"Transfers."
"And enough evidence to identify people who disappeared decades ago."
Isabella closed her eyes.
Alexander looked at the corridor.
"How many?"
Mercer swallowed.
"More than two hundred."
Silence fell.
Alexander looked down at Lucy.
The little girl was holding her mother's hand.
She didn't understand the numbers.
She didn't understand the crimes.
She only knew that both her parents were standing beside her.
Alexander knelt.
"Lucy."
She looked at him.
"Yes, Daddy?"
He touched her cheek.
"Your mommy and I are going to take you home."
She smiled.
"Both of you?"
Alexander looked up at Isabella.
She was crying.
He nodded.
"Both of us."
Lucy wrapped her arms around his neck.
"Then can we have pancakes?"
May you like
Alexander laughed through tears.
"Sweetheart, you can have all the pancakes you want."
