Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO DIED

Elena Reyes opened the motel door before Maya knocked.
For several seconds, neither woman moved.
Maya’s mind rejected what her eyes were seeing.
Her mother.
Alive.
Then Elena whispered, “Mi niña.”
Maya slapped her.
The sound cracked through the room.
Elena didn’t defend herself.
Maya slapped her again.
Then collapsed into her arms.
She hated her.
She loved her.
She wanted to scream.
She wanted to be six years old again.
“You died,” Maya sobbed.
“I know.”
“I buried you.”
“I know.”
“You let me!”
“I’m sorry.”
“Stop saying that!”
Maya shoved her away.
Luis stood in the doorway behind Mercer.
When Elena saw him, her knees nearly buckled.
“Luis.”
He looked like a little boy.
“Mom?”
She crossed the room.
He couldn’t move.
Then she hugged him.
Luis broke.
Not quietly.
Not gracefully.
He buried his face against her shoulder and sobbed.
Maya watched, furious that love could survive so much damage.
Mercer gave them two minutes.
Then the detective inside him returned.
“Mrs. Reyes, we need the truth.”
Elena sat on the bed.
“It started seventeen years ago.”
She explained Sterling Medical.
The defective equipment.
The deaths.
The falsified reports.
Charles’s bribes.
She had copied everything.
Then Adrian found her.
He was twenty-two.
Angry.
Terrified.
“He wanted to expose his father,” Elena said.
“So you gave him the money?” Maya asked.
“Yes.”
“Two million dollars?”
“I thought he could disappear.”
“But he didn’t.”
“No.”
Adrian used the money to build a hidden network: lawyers, investigators, whistleblowers, hackers, private security.
At first, Elena admired him.
Then Adrian’s mission changed.
Evidence wasn’t enough.
He wanted revenge.
“Why did Charles fake Adrian’s death?” Mercer asked.
“Because Adrian threatened to release documents unless Charles confessed publicly.”
“So Charles had him committed.”
“Yes.”
“And Adrian escaped?”
Elena nodded.
“Dr. Voss helped him.”
“What happened to Voss?”
Elena looked down.
“Adrian killed him.”
Silence.
Maya felt cold.
“Why?”
“Because Voss tried to leave.”
Mercer wrote something.
“So Adrian is a murderer.”
“Yes.”
“Eleanor knew this?”
“Yes.”
“And still worked with him?”
“She thought she could control him.”
Maya almost laughed.
Of course she did.
Elena looked at her daughter.
“Adrian contacted me three weeks ago. He said tonight would end everything.”
“The anniversary dinner.”
“Yes.”
“But Eleanor changed the plan.”
Elena nodded.
“She decided to kill Charles herself and blame you.”
Maya stared.
“Why me?”
“Because you were in the trust.”
“How did she know?”
“She found the amendment.”
The room went quiet.
Mercer asked the question Maya was afraid to ask.
“Where is Adrian now?”
Elena looked toward the window.
“He isn’t running anymore.”
“How do you know?”
“Because he already has what he wanted.”
“What?”
Elena looked at Maya.
“Charles confessed.”
Maya frowned.
“When?”
“Tonight.”
“He didn’t confess publicly.”
“No.”
Elena reached for the motel television remote.
She turned it on.
Every channel showed the same breaking-news banner.
STERLING MEDICAL ARCHIVES LEAKED ONLINE.
Thousands of internal files.
Payments.
Dead patients.
Officials.
Cover-ups.
Charles’s empire was collapsing in real time.
Then another headline appeared.
FBI RAID UNDERWAY AT STERLING MEDICAL HEADQUARTERS.
Luis stared.
“Adrian did it.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
Maya turned.
“Who did?”
Elena looked directly at her daughter.
“I did.”
Before anyone could speak, a red laser dot appeared on Elena’s chest.
Maya screamed.
May you like
“GET DOWN!”
The motel window exploded.
