Chapter 12 - Three Generations in One Room

The cabin looked exactly as Gabriel remembered.

Its dark wooden walls reflected the moonlight.

The porch swing moved gently in the wind.

A yellow lamp glowed behind the living room window.

But the atmosphere was wrong.

Too quiet.

Too still.

Gabriel stood near the edge of the driveway while Detective Keene explained the next step.

Officers were positioned around the property.

The investigators had confirmed that the kidnappers were inside.

No one intended to let Nathaniel escape with Izzy.

Gabriel nodded as he listened.

But all he could see was the light in the window.

Somewhere behind that glass, his little girl was waiting.

His phone vibrated.

Front door.

Now.

Gabriel showed the message to Detective Keene.

She looked toward her team.

Then she gave Gabriel a final warning.

"Do exactly what we agreed."

He nodded.

"And Gabriel?"

He looked at her.

"Your daughter needs you alive."

Gabriel swallowed.

"I know."

He crossed the gravel path toward the porch.

Every step felt impossibly heavy.

The wooden boards creaked beneath his shoes.

He reached the front door.

Before he could knock, it opened.

Adrian Cole stood inside.

His face looked exhausted.

A bruise marked his cheek.

His right hand trembled.

Gabriel stared at him.

"Where's Isabelle?"

Adrian looked over his shoulder.

"Inside."

Gabriel stepped forward.

Adrian caught his arm.

"Listen carefully."

Gabriel's jaw tightened.

"Don't touch me."

"I need you to hear this."

Adrian lowered his voice.

"My father has a gun."

Gabriel felt cold.

"Where is he?"

"In the living room."

"And Isabelle?"

"Beside your grandfather's old clock."

Gabriel swallowed.

"Is she hurt?"

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

Gabriel studied him.

"You helped take her."

Adrian looked away.

"Yes."

"You frightened my daughter."

"I know."

Gabriel stepped closer.

"Then you are going to help me get her out."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"I already have."

Before Gabriel could ask what he meant, Nathaniel shouted from inside.

"Bring him in!"

Adrian stepped aside.

Gabriel entered.

The cabin smelled of wood smoke and old furniture polish.

A fire burned in the stone fireplace.

The old clock ticked above the mantel.

And beside a wooden chair sat Izzy.

She wore the same white sweater she'd had on that morning.

Her braids were loose.

Her cheeks were wet.

But she was alive.

"Daddy!"

Gabriel moved toward her.

Nathaniel raised a pistol.

"Stop."

Gabriel froze.

Izzy began crying.

"Daddy, please."

Gabriel kept his voice steady.

"I'm here, sweetheart."

Nathaniel stepped into the firelight.

He looked older than his photographs.

Deep lines framed his mouth.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

He wore a dark jacket and polished shoes.

But his eyes were hard.

"Gabriel Whitmore."

He smiled.

"Your father always said you were stubborn."

Gabriel looked past him.

"Let her go."

Nathaniel gestured toward a folder on the table.

"After we finish our business."

Gabriel stared at him.

"She's a child."

"And you're a businessman."

Nathaniel tapped the folder.

"Let's act like adults."

Gabriel didn't move.

"Where's my father?"

Nathaniel's smile widened.

"Still asking the wrong questions."

Gabriel pointed toward the hallway.

"You said he was here."

Nathaniel gave a small laugh.

"Did I?"

Gabriel felt anger rising.

"Stop playing games."

The older man moved closer.

"Games?"

He shook his head.

"Your father played games with me for thirty years."

Gabriel stared.

"What did he do?"

"He took everything."

"What?"

"My company."

Nathaniel's voice sharpened.

"My reputation."

He looked toward Izzy.

"And then he had the nerve to leave his fortune to a child."

Gabriel shook his head.

"You destroyed your own company."

Nathaniel's expression changed.

Gabriel continued.

"The financial records show what you did."

Nathaniel raised the pistol slightly.

"Careful."

Gabriel fell silent.

"Sign the documents."

Nathaniel pushed the folder toward him.

Gabriel opened it.

The papers contained agreements designed to redirect trust assets and release claims against companies connected to Cross.

He looked up.

"These won't stand up."

Nathaniel shrugged.

"Maybe."

He glanced at Izzy.

"But you don't have time to argue."

Gabriel gripped the pen lying beside the folder.

He had no intention of allowing his daughter to remain in danger while discussing money.

But he also understood that Nathaniel controlled the room.

He needed to keep the man talking.

"What makes you think my signature will give you everything?"

Nathaniel smiled.

"Because I know more about your father's estate than you do."

Gabriel looked toward Adrian.

Adrian stood near the doorway.

His expression was unreadable.

Nathaniel continued.

"Thomas created the trust long before Isabelle was born."

Gabriel frowned.

"Why?"

"Because he believed a future grandchild would save this family."

Gabriel stared.

Nathaniel laughed bitterly.

"Can you imagine?"

He shook his head.

"All that money."

"Enough."

Gabriel looked directly at him.

"You have a gun pointed at my daughter because you're angry about an inheritance."

Nathaniel's face darkened.

"Your father ruined my life."

Gabriel stepped closer.

"No."

His voice became calm.

"You ruined your own life."

Nathaniel's jaw clenched.

Gabriel continued.

"And now you're trying to ruin a little girl's."

A sound came from the hallway.

A wheelchair rolled over the wooden floor.

Gabriel turned.

An elderly man appeared in the doorway.

His shoulders were thin.

His hands rested on a blanket covering his knees.

His white hair was combed neatly.

He wore a dark green sweater.

For one impossible second, Gabriel thought he was dreaming.

Then the man lifted his head.

His eyes filled with tears.

"Gabriel?"

Gabriel couldn't breathe.

"Dad?"

Thomas Whitmore opened his arms.

"Son."

Gabriel took one step.

Then another.

He fell to his knees beside the wheelchair.

His father pulled him close.

Gabriel buried his face against Thomas's shoulder.

For nine years, he had mourned this man.

For nine years, he had believed he would never hear his voice again.

Now Thomas held him with trembling arms.

"My boy."

The older man's voice broke.

"My beautiful boy."

Gabriel sobbed.

"Dad."

Thomas pressed his cheek against Gabriel's hair.

"I'm sorry."

Gabriel shook his head.

"No."

"I'm so sorry."

Gabriel couldn't stop crying.

He felt like a little boy again.

Not a millionaire.

Not a company president.

Just a son who had finally found his father.

Behind them, Izzy whispered:

"Is that Grandpa?"

Gabriel pulled back.

Thomas looked at the child.

His entire face changed.

"Oh."

He covered his mouth.

"Isabelle?"

Izzy nodded.

Thomas began crying.

"My little girl."

She looked toward Gabriel.

"Daddy?"

Gabriel held out his hand.

"Come here, sweetheart."

Izzy hurried toward them.

Nathaniel shouted, "Stay where you are!"

Adrian suddenly stepped between Nathaniel and the child.

"Enough, Dad."

Nathaniel turned sharply.

"Move."

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

Nathaniel stared at his son.

"You have no idea what you're doing."

Adrian's eyes filled.

"Yes, I do."

He pointed toward Izzy.

"She's six years old."

Nathaniel raised the gun.

"Adrian."

"No."

Adrian's voice grew stronger.

"You lied about the fire."

Nathaniel froze.

"You lied about Thomas."

Adrian stepped closer.

"And you lied about me."

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Nathaniel's expression twisted.

"You're making a mistake."

Adrian shook his head.

"I made a mistake when I believed you."

A sharp crack echoed through the room.

Izzy screamed.

Gabriel lunged forward and pulled her beneath him.

The sound of breaking glass filled the cabin.

Then men shouted outside.

"POLICE!"

Gabriel covered Izzy's head with both arms.

More footsteps thundered across the porch.

Someone yelled for Nathaniel to drop the weapon.

Then the room went silent.

Gabriel lifted his head.

Nathaniel was on the floor, being restrained by officers.

His pistol lay several feet away.

A window beside the fireplace had shattered.

Adrian sat against the wall, gripping his bleeding upper arm.

Detective Keene rushed inside.

"Everyone stay down until the scene is secure!"

Gabriel held Izzy tightly.

She was trembling.

"Daddy?"

He kissed her forehead.

"I'm here."

"Are we going home?"

Gabriel looked at Thomas.

His father sat in the wheelchair, crying silently.

Gabriel pressed his cheek against Izzy's hair.

"Yes."

His voice broke.

"We're all going home."

But just as officers began escorting Nathaniel outside, he turned toward Gabriel.

The older man smiled.

"Ask your mother why she kept Olivia alive."

Gabriel froze.

Nathaniel laughed.

"Go ahead."

His eyes gleamed.

"Ask her what she needed from the woman she hated."

Then the police led him away.

And Gabriel realized that even after finding his father and saving his daughter, one final secret remained.
