Chapter 10 - Vanessa's Last Lie

Vanessa Whitmore had spent most of her life learning how to survive around dangerous people.

Her father had taught her that affection was a transaction.

Her brother Raymond had taught her that loyalty could be bought.

And Richard Vance had offered something she'd never truly possessed.

A peaceful home.

A child who once smiled when she entered a room.

A man who had wanted to believe she loved him.

But she had poisoned those things herself.

Now she sat in a rented apartment in Manhattan, watching her phone light up with unanswered calls.

Raymond was missing.

Her father had stopped responding.

Richard had thrown her out.

And the news was broadcasting security footage from the night of the tower collapse.

A television commentator asked whether the disaster had been deliberate.

Vanessa switched off the screen.

Her phone rang.

She answered.

“Father?”

Victor Whitmore spoke without greeting.

“You made a mess.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Raymond made the mess.”

“Raymond followed instructions.”

“He nearly killed Noah.”

“He was supposed to create an injury.”

“You saw that tower.”

“Children are surprisingly resilient.”

Vanessa's stomach turned.

“He's five years old.”

Victor laughed softly.

“You sound sentimental.”

“I never agreed to murder.”

“You agreed to put him near the display.”

Vanessa gripped the phone.

“I agreed to the hospital plan. I didn't agree to that ridiculous tower being dropped on him.”

“You wanted Richard's money.”

“I wanted the trust arrangement.”

“Then stop pretending you're innocent.”

Vanessa said nothing.

Victor continued.

“Richard has Caroline's documents.”

“I know.”

“Find out where.”

“Richard won't speak to me.”

“Then speak to the maid.”

Vanessa stiffened.

“Elena?”

“She has his confidence.”

“She hates me.”

“Then make her an offer.”

Vanessa looked at the small suitcase beside her bed.

“I can't go back.”

Victor's voice changed.

“You can do whatever I tell you.”

A pause.

Then he added, “Unless you'd like Richard to learn what happened three years ago.”

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“You promised never to use that against me.”

“I promise a great many things.”

The line went dead.

Vanessa sat motionless.

Then she opened a drawer.

Inside was an old photograph.

Caroline Vance stood beside her at a charity luncheon.

They were smiling.

Caroline's arm rested lightly around Vanessa's shoulders.

Vanessa looked younger in the picture.

Less polished.

Less frightened.

Caroline had trusted her.

And that was the one betrayal Vanessa couldn't make herself forget.

At the estate, Richard was examining a new message.

Daniel had traced its origin to a phone purchased with cash.

No account information.

No obvious connection.

But the sender knew about Caroline's tea.

Richard remembered something.

Caroline had developed a habit of drinking herbal tea each evening after Noah went to bed.

Vanessa had introduced the brand.

She'd described it as a calming blend imported from Europe.

Richard had never questioned it.

He looked at Dr. Shaw.

“Could something have been added?”

The doctor nodded cautiously.

“It's possible, but we'd need evidence.”

“Caroline's blood sample?”

“That's where we begin.”

Daniel had arranged for the laboratory material to be reviewed under proper legal supervision.

But the original sample's storage record would need independent verification.

The process could take days.

Richard hated every minute of it.

Then his assistant entered.

“Sir, Vanessa is at the front gate.”

Richard looked up.

Daniel immediately reached for his radio.

“Don't admit her.”

The assistant hesitated.

“She says she has information about Caroline.”

Richard stood.

Daniel frowned.

“It's a trap.”

“Maybe.”

“Then don't make it easy.”

Richard walked toward the window.

Vanessa stood beyond the gate beneath a gray umbrella.

No security entourage.

No designer handbag.

Just a woman in a plain black coat.

She appeared smaller than he remembered.

“Bring her to the security office,” Richard said.

Daniel stared.

“Richard.”

“Six guards. Recorded interview. Search her before entry.”

Daniel considered the order.

Then nodded.

Twenty minutes later, Vanessa sat across from Richard in a windowless room.

Daniel stood near the door.

A camera recorded everything.

Vanessa looked at Richard.

“You look terrible.”

He didn't respond.

She lowered her eyes.

“I suppose I deserve that.”

Richard leaned forward.

“What happened to Caroline?”

Vanessa's fingers tightened around her purse.

“I didn't know she was going to die.”

Richard felt the air leave his lungs.

“Answer the question.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“My father told me Caroline was making herself sick.”

Richard stared.

“What?”

“He said she was taking medication that interacted badly with her tea.”

“Did you believe him?”

“At first.”

Richard's voice hardened.

“What did you give her?”

Vanessa began crying.

“Herbal packets.”

“What was in them?”

“I don't know.”

“Vanessa.”

“I swear I didn't know.”

Richard leaned closer.

“How many?”

She closed her eyes.

“Three.”

He stared.

“Three what?”

“Three packets.”

“When?”

“Over two weeks.”

Richard felt sick.

“Did Caroline ask you for them?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Because I told her they'd help her sleep.”

Daniel's expression darkened.

Richard's hands curled into fists.

Vanessa whispered, “When she got sick, I wanted to tell someone.”

“Then why didn't you?”

“My father said I'd be charged with murder.”

Richard looked at her.

“Did you know it could hurt her?”

Vanessa began shaking.

“Not at first.”

Richard's voice dropped.

“And later?”

She said nothing.

Richard waited.

Finally, she whispered, “I suspected.”

The words struck harder than any confession shouted in anger.

Richard stood.

Vanessa reached toward him.

“Richard, I loved you.”

He stared at her.

“You helped destroy my wife.”

“I was afraid.”

“You watched me bury her.”

Vanessa was sobbing now.

“You don't understand what my father is capable of.”

Richard leaned forward.

“No.”

His voice was frighteningly calm.

“You don't understand what you've done.”

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“I'm willing to testify.”

Daniel didn't move.

“Under what conditions?”

“Protection.”

“From Victor?”

She nodded.

“And Raymond.”

Richard studied her.

“Tell us where they are.”

Vanessa hesitated.

Then reached into her purse.

Daniel immediately raised a hand.

“Slowly.”

She removed a folded paper.

An address.

A waterfront estate in Connecticut.

Daniel recognized it.

The same property he'd been investigating.

Vanessa placed it on the table.

“My father has been hiding there.”

Richard took the paper.

“Why should I believe you?”

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Because he called me this morning.”

“What did he say?”

She looked at Richard.

“He said you found Caroline's letter.”

Richard went still.

Vanessa continued.

“And he said there was something else you hadn't found.”

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“A second letter.”

“Where?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Caroline left it with someone she trusted.”

“Who?”

Vanessa looked toward the door.

Then whispered, “Your son.”

Richard stared.

“Noah?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

May you like

She met his eyes.

“Your other son.”
