Chapter 13 - The Waiter Who Was Never a Waiter

“Drop it,” the federal agent ordered.

Peter smiled.

“No.”

Hannah stared at him.

Three weeks.

He had corrected her uniform.

Changed her shifts.

Told her which tables to serve.

He had put her on Table Seven.

“You knew,” she whispered.

Peter’s eyes stayed on her.

“I knew Daniel had hidden something.”

“So you hired me.”

“I thought he might have given you access without telling you.”

“You put me near Dominic’s children on purpose?”

Peter laughed.

“That part was luck.”

Dominic stepped between them.

Peter moved the gun.

“Don’t.”

Dominic stopped.

Peter looked at Hannah again.

“Your father was stubborn.”

“My father was dying.”

“He was still stubborn.”

“You threatened him?”

“Many times.”

Rage flashed through Hannah.

Peter continued.

“He never told me where the drive was.”

“So you waited until he died.”

“I waited for you.”

Hannah wanted to throw something at him.

“You watched me work two jobs and drown in medical debt while you pretended to help me.”

Peter shrugged.

“I needed you desperate.”

Dominic’s voice turned cold.

“Why?”

“Desperate people accept convenient opportunities.”

Hannah understood.

The Bellafonte job.

The extra shifts.

Table Seven.

Peter had been moving her like a piece on a board.

“But the girls ruined your plan,” she said.

Peter’s smile disappeared.

Hannah continued.

“They spoke.”

He tightened his grip.

“That complicated things.”

“You reported Dominic to police.”

“Yes.”

“You told Julian we found my father’s storage room.”

“Yes.”

Dominic’s eyes went black.

Peter laughed.

“You mafia princes always think betrayal has to come from family.”

Sirens approached outside.

Peter glanced toward the stairwell.

Mistake.

Dominic moved.

Fast.

The gun fired.

Hannah screamed.

Dominic hit Peter’s arm.

The bullet shattered a wine rack.

Bottles exploded.

An agent tackled Peter.

The second agent kicked away the gun.

Within seconds Peter was face-down on the floor.

Handcuffed.

Hannah leaned against the wall.

Dominic came toward her.

“You hit?”

“No.”

He checked anyway.

Arms.

Shoulders.

Face.

“I said I’m fine.”

“You say a lot of things.”

Peter laughed from the floor.

Dominic looked down.

Peter’s smile returned.

“You think finding the drive ends this?”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

Peter continued.

“Julian kept backups.”

“Where?”

“Ask your wife.”

Dominic grabbed him by the collar.

The agents pulled Dominic back.

Peter looked at Hannah.

“You want the real truth?”

“Shut up,” Dominic said.

Peter ignored him.

“Evelyn didn’t discover Julian by accident.”

Hannah froze.

“What does that mean?”

Peter smiled.

“She was investigating Dominic.”

Silence.

Hannah turned toward him.

Dominic’s expression changed.

Peter laughed harder.

“That’s right.”

He looked at Hannah.

“Your sister married a mafia boss…”

May you like

His eyes shifted to Dominic.

“…then secretly started building the case that could destroy him.”
