Chapter 14 - What Family Means

The gunshot echoed through the vault.

Elena fell.

Matteo screamed.

Silas fired.

Helena’s gun flew from her hand as the bullet struck her shoulder.

She collapsed against the wall.

Khloe dropped beside Elena.

Blood spread across her sleeve.

“Elena!”

“I’m okay.”

The bullet had torn through her upper arm.

Painful.

Bloody.

But survivable.

Matteo clung to her.

Silas stood over Helena.

His gun pointed down.

She stared up at him.

“Do it.”

His hand shook.

“You killed my father.”

“He was weak.”

“You poisoned my son.”

“He threatened everything.”

“You took my wife.”

“She was beneath you.”

Silas’s finger tightened.

Helena smiled.

“There he is.”

Khloe watched Silas.

Helena whispered:

“My son.”

Silas’s face changed.

He suddenly understood.

This was her final trap.

If he killed her, she won.

Every accusation.

Every court filing.

Every claim that he was too violent to raise Matteo.

Silas lowered the gun.

“No.”

Helena’s smile disappeared.

“You don’t deserve mercy.”

Silas stepped back.

“This isn’t mercy.”

Sirens grew louder above the mill.

Victor smiled grimly.

“Upload worked.”

Federal agents stormed the building minutes later.

Dr. Mercer was arrested.

Two guards surrendered.

One fled and was caught outside.

Helena screamed about warrants, ownership, betrayal.

Nobody cared.

An agent handcuffed her.

She looked at Silas.

“You have nothing now.”

Silas turned toward Matteo.

His son was sitting beside Elena while Khloe wrapped her wound.

Silas signed slowly.

Are you okay?

Matteo stared at him.

Then nodded.

Silas looked back at Helena.

“I have enough.”

Helena was taken away.

Hours later, in the hospital, Matteo slept between his parents.

Silas sat on one side.

Elena on the other.

Khloe stood near the doorway.

She suddenly felt like an outsider.

Her job was finished.

Victor appeared beside her.

“You leaving?”

“I should.”

“Why?”

Khloe looked through the glass.

“That’s his family.”

Victor followed her gaze.

“Family’s more complicated than that.”

Khloe smiled.

“You sound philosophical for a man who broke someone’s nose at thirty thousand feet.”

“He started it.”

Khloe laughed softly.

Then Silas appeared in the doorway.

“Khloe.”

She turned.

“I wanted to say goodbye.”

His expression hardened.

“Why?”

She blinked.

“Because the emergency is over.”

“No.”

He glanced toward Matteo.

“The emergency is different.”

Khloe waited.

Silas struggled with the words.

“My son needs a language.”

“He needs a certified deaf education specialist, audiologist, counselors—”

“I know.”

“He needs school support.”

“I know.”

“He needs both parents to learn ASL.”

“I know.”

Khloe folded her arms.

“Then what do you need me for?”

Silas looked at her.

“To teach me where to start.”

She softened.

“You start by listening.”

His mouth moved into the smallest smile.

“To the son who can’t hear me.”

“Exactly.”

Silas looked back at Matteo.

Then he signed something.

Clumsy.

Slow.

But correct.

Stay?

Khloe laughed.

“You practiced that.”

“For twenty minutes.”

She considered him.

Then signed back.

For a while.

Silas smiled.

Behind him, Matteo had woken up.

He saw their hands.

Then he grinned.

For the first time since Khloe had met him—

the child wasn’t crying.

But the story still wasn’t finished.

Because the next morning Victor entered the room carrying a federal evidence envelope.

Inside was a document recovered from Helena’s private safe.

Silas opened it.

His face changed.

Khloe asked, “What is it?”

Silas looked at Elena.

Then at Matteo.

“A birth certificate.”

Elena frowned.

“We already have one.”

Silas shook his head.

“No.”

He turned the document around.

May you like

“This one says Matteo wasn’t my father’s only grandchild.”
