Chapter 11 - HELENA’S LAST TEST

Sofia kept singing.

Her voice trembled.

But she did not stop.

Camilla stood slowly.

“Where did you learn that verse?”

“Mommy.”

Camilla’s eyes narrowed.

Behind Sofia, Elena Ruiz moved closer to the panic button.

Camilla noticed.

“Don’t.”

Two men entered.

Elena froze.

Camilla looked at Sofia again.

“What did your mother tell you about the song?”

Sofia said nothing.

Camilla crouched.

“I loved your mommy.”

“No.”

The child’s answer came instantly.

Camilla flinched.

Sofia hugged her rabbit.

“Mommy was scared of you.”

Camilla’s face hardened.

At the clinic, Dante raced toward the car.

Alessandro called after him.

“You won’t reach her.”

Dante turned.

His father remained behind the glass.

“So help me.”

Alessandro smiled.

“Why would I?”

“Because Camilla doesn’t need you anymore.”

The smile disappeared.

Dante saw it.

A fracture.

Good.

He continued.

“You think she’s still your daughter.”

“She surpassed you years ago.”

Alessandro’s jaw tightened.

“You know nothing about her.”

“I know she built the foundation.”

“I know Vale answers to her.”

“I know she staged your death.”

A pause.

Dante had guessed the last part.

Alessandro’s reaction confirmed it.

Camilla had not merely helped her father disappear.

She had imprisoned him inside his own lie.

Dante stepped closer.

“She used you.”

“No.”

“She learned from you.”

“Then improved.”

Alessandro looked toward the surveillance screens.

For the first time, uncertainty appeared.

Dante lowered his voice.

“Tell me the safe-house override.”

Alessandro said nothing.

“Or Sofia disappears with Camilla.”

“Then neither of us controls what happens next.”

That word mattered.

Controls.

Alessandro’s weakness.

Not love.

Not family.

Control.

He gave Dante a sequence.

Marco transmitted it.

At the safe house, the emergency shutters dropped.

Camilla’s men were separated.

Elena grabbed Sofia.

They ran toward the reinforced bedroom.

Camilla reached the door before it closed.

She caught Sofia’s sleeve.

Sofia screamed.

Elena pulled.

The fabric tore.

The door slammed between them.

Camilla hit the metal once.

Then stopped.

She turned.

An alarm began.

She had lost the clean extraction.

Her men were trapped.

She left through a service exit seconds before the secondary locks activated.

Dante received confirmation.

“Sofia is secure.”

He closed his eyes.

One breath.

Then another.

When he opened them, Alessandro was watching.

“You care too much.”

Dante stared at him.

“Yes.”

His father almost looked disappointed.

“That was always your weakness.”

“No.”

Dante stepped closer.

“That’s why I survived you.”

Alessandro’s expression changed.

Dante walked away.

He did not kill his father.

Did not strike him.

Did not give him the satisfaction of becoming what he had trained him to be.

Marco’s men detained Alessandro.

European authorities would receive an evidence package through lawyers.

No private execution.

No disappearance.

Dante wanted records.

Names.

Trials.

Exposure.

The empire built on silence would die loudly.

But Camilla escaped.

And Dr. Vale disappeared with her.

Marta returned with Isabela.

On the flight home, mother and daughter sat side by side.

Nine lost years lay between them.

Neither knew how to cross them in one night.

Marta finally spoke.

“I watched you from far away.”

Isabela looked at her.

“Birthdays?”

“Yes.”

“Graduation?”

“Yes.”

“My engagement?”

Marta smiled sadly.

“You ended it three weeks later.”

Despite everything, Isabela laughed.

“You knew?”

“I knew he was wrong for you before you did.”

Isabela wiped her eyes.

“Then you should have told me.”

“I wanted to.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Marta looked toward Dante.

“Helena made me promise.”

Dante sat several seats away.

He pretended not to listen.

Marta continued.

“Helena said if I contacted you, Camilla would find us both.”

“Did Helena know Camilla ran the program?”

“Not at first.”

“When did she know?”

“The night she died.”

Isabela went still.

“How?”

Marta opened her bag.

She removed a tiny silver music box.

Helena’s.

“Your song has one final purpose.”

She opened the music box.

The melody played.

Marta twisted the small key backward instead of forward.

A hidden compartment popped open.

Inside was a micro SD card.

“Helena mailed this to me the morning she died.”

Dante moved closer.

“What’s on it?”

“I never opened it.”

“Why?”

“She wrote one instruction.”

Marta handed Isabela a note.

ONLY ISABELA.

Isabela stared.

“Why me?”

Marta smiled faintly.

“Maybe because Helena knew every Montenegro would be watched.”

“And nobody would watch the poor nanny.”

Back at the mansion, they inserted the card into an isolated laptop.

A video opened.

Helena appeared.

Alive.

Tired.

Terrified.

She looked directly at the camera.

“My name is Helena Valera Montenegro.”

“If Isabela Reyes is watching this, then I failed.”

Isabela’s eyes filled.

Helena continued.

“Camilla is not the beginning.”

“She is not the end.”

“The Blue Protocol has clients.”

“Families.”

“Corporations.”

“Guardians.”

“People who paid to make children easier to control.”

Dante stared at the screen.

Helena lifted a stack of documents.

“I copied the client list.”

“I hid it where Alessandro will never look.”

“Inside Dante’s first memory.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“Ask him what happened after the song stopped.”

The video ended.

Dante went pale.

Isabela turned.

“What happened after the song stopped?”

He closed his eyes.

Blue room.

Needle.

Marta singing somewhere outside.

Then silence.

A hand taking his.

Not his father.

A woman.

Young.

Dark hair.

She led him through a door.

Downstairs.

A basement.

A painted sun on the wall.

A metal box beneath it.

Dante opened his eyes.

“I know where Helena hid the list.”

“Where?”

He looked at Isabela.

“The original Valera hospital.”

“It wasn’t demolished.”

“The public building was.”

“But there was a basement no one knew existed.”

Marco checked property records.

The site now housed a luxury hotel.

Owned by Montenegro Holdings.

Dante almost laughed.

The evidence had been beneath one of his own properties for years.

They drove there before dawn.

In the basement, behind a renovated wine cellar, Dante found the old wall.

Layers of paint covered it.

But beneath them, the shape remained.

A child’s yellow sun.

They broke through.

A rusted metal box sat inside.

Helena’s client list.

Hundreds of pages.

Names.

Payments.

Dates.

Doctors.

Guardians.

Judges.

Executives.

Then Isabela saw one name near the bottom.

Her breath stopped.

ISABELA REYES.

Patient candidate.

Age 6.

Status: Removed from program by Marta Reyes.

Dante looked at her.

“You were supposed to be one of them.”

Isabela stared at the paper.

Then she saw the authorization signature.

The person who had approved her enrollment as a child.

It was not Alessandro.

Not Camilla.

Not Dr. Vale.

The signature belonged to Helena’s mother.

May you like

Victoria Valera.

A woman who was still alive.
