Chapter 12 - The Man Who Bought Silence

Richard Calder lived behind twelve-foot stone walls.

His estate looked less like a home than a luxury hotel.

Helen’s investigators established a perimeter.

No sirens.

No lights.

The warrant had finally been approved.

But they still needed time to move units into position.

Liana entered first.

Matteo hated the plan.

That was obvious.

She wore a hidden microphone.

No weapon.

Emily met her near the greenhouse.

She looked nothing like the frightened maid from the Varric mansion.

Her blonde wig was gone.

Her real hair was dark.

Her posture had changed.

“Come.”

She said.

“Where’s Damian?”

“Alive.”

“Nico?”

“Not here.”

“Then why does Calder want me?”

Emily stopped.

“Because Ava changed the study.”

Liana’s chest tightened.

“What do you mean?”

“Your daughter survived a dose level that killed three previous subjects.”

Liana wanted to hit her.

Instead she kept walking.

“That made her valuable.”

“To him.”

“Yes.”

“To you?”

Emily looked away.

“That question is more complicated.”

“No.”

Liana’s voice hardened.

“It isn’t.”

They entered a study.

Richard Calder sat beside a fireplace.

Seventy-one.

Silver hair.

Soft sweater.

A grandfather waiting for Christmas photographs.

He smiled.

“Miss Graves.”

Liana remained standing.

“You killed my baby.”

Calder sighed.

“Young people always want the first sentence to be the loudest.”

“My daughter is dead.”

“So is mine.”

Emily’s face changed.

Liana looked at her.

Calder continued.

“Emily’s mother died when she was six.”

“She asked you about Ava.”

Emily said.

Calder looked irritated.

“Later.”

“No.”

Liana remained standing.

“Now.”

Calder smiled.

“You have courage.”

“I had a daughter.”

His smile faded slightly.

Liana stepped closer.

“You took everything that could scare me.”

Calder studied her.

Then he poured tea.

“Ava’s reaction was unfortunate.”

“Her murder.”

“Adverse medical outcomes are not murder.”

“Secretly experimenting on babies is.”

“That will be argued.”

“Not by Ava.”

Calder looked at her for a long moment.

“You think this is about cruelty.”

“What should I think?”

“You should think about every human being who dies in unbearable pain.”

Liana felt rage building.

“You don’t get to use sick adults to excuse what you did to babies.”

“The legal process moves slowly.”

“Then medicine moves slowly.”

“Disease does not.”

“Neither did Ava’s funeral.”

That silenced him.

Emily looked toward her father.

For the first time, Liana saw doubt.

Calder set down his cup.

“Sofia spoke like you.”

“Good.”

“She was emotional.”

“She was right.”

“She almost destroyed research that could save millions.”

“She tried to save twelve babies.”

Calder’s expression hardened.

“History remembers results.”

Liana stared at him.

“Parents remember names.”

She began listing them.

“Ava Graves.”

“Daniel Cho.”

“Mia Ramirez.”

“Elliot Park.”

She had memorized every red name in the ledger.

Calder’s eyes shifted.

“Lily Porter.”

“Samuel Brooks.”

“Jasmine Reed.”

“Connor Hale.”

Liana stepped closer.

“They weren’t subjects.”

“They were children.”

Emily looked down.

Calder’s face became cold.

“You came here to accuse me.”

“No.”

Liana touched the hidden microphone beneath her collar.

“I came to hear you accuse yourself.”

Calder’s eyes flicked toward the fabric.

Too late.

He stood.

Emily blocked him.

“Sit down.”

Calder stared at her.

“What are you doing?”

“Sit.”

“You ungrateful—”

“You used me.”

Emily’s voice trembled.

“For twenty years.”

“I protected you.”

“You taught me to lie.”

“I gave you a life.”

“You gave me jobs cleaning blood off your floor.”

Calder’s face twisted.

“You are my daughter.”

“Only when you need something.”

Liana watched him realize he had lost control.

He reached toward the desk.

Emily pulled a weapon.

“Don’t.”

Calder stopped.

Police lights appeared beyond the windows.

Helen’s voice came through Liana’s earpiece.

“Move away from him.”

Liana did.

Calder looked outside.

His expression did not change.

“You think this ends with an arrest?”

Liana looked at him.

“It starts with one.”

The doors opened.

Helen entered with investigators.

Matteo came behind them despite being told not to.

Calder saw him.

“Matteo.”

Matteo looked at the older man.

“My father trusted you.”

Calder laughed.

“Your father trusted money.”

Matteo stepped closer.

“You ordered Sofia killed.”

“No.”

Calder smiled.

“I told Vittorio she had become a liability.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“You understand nuance now?”

Matteo’s jaw tightened.

Helen moved between them.

Calder lifted his hands.

“I want an attorney.”

“Good.”

Helen said.

“You’ll need several.”

They found Damian in a locked bedroom upstairs.

Shot through the side.

Alive.

Barely.

Naomi treated him until paramedics arrived.

As they carried him out, Damian looked at Matteo.

“I’m sorry.”

Matteo stared at him.

“For Sofia?”

“Yes.”

“For Nico?”

“Yes.”

“For the children?”

Damian closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Matteo leaned closer.

“Then live.”

Damian opened his eyes.

“What?”

“Live long enough to say it where their parents can hear you.”

For the first time, Damian looked afraid of something other than death.

Accountability.

Calder was placed in a vehicle.

Emily was detained separately.

Helen promised nothing.

No immunity.

No special deal.

Only that cooperation would be documented.

By sunrise, the estate was secured.

Liana stood outside with Matteo.

“We have him.”

She said.

Matteo looked toward the police vehicles.

“We have one man.”

“You think there are more?”

“There are always more.”

Liana looked at him.

“That isn’t the same as this case.”

Matteo nodded.

“No.”

His phone rang.

Naomi.

He answered.

“What?”

His face changed.

Liana’s stomach tightened.

“What happened?”

Matteo listened.

Then whispered.

“We’re coming.”

He ended the call.

“What?”

Liana asked.

Matteo looked at her.

May you like

“Nico stopped breathing.”
