Chapter 14 - THE LAST CONFESSION

Barrett was dying.

The bullet had torn through his lung.

Doctors could do nothing except control the pain.

Kendrick stood outside the hospital room.

Evelyn beside him.

"You don't have to go in," she said.

"Yes, I do."

Inside, Barrett looked small.

Nothing like the man who had dominated the ballroom hours earlier.

Penny stayed outside with Lucas and Titan.

Kendrick approached the bed.

Barrett opened his eyes.

"Kendrick."

"You wanted to see me."

Barrett breathed painfully.

"And Penny."

"No."

A weak smile.

"Fair."

Kendrick stood silently.

Barrett looked toward Evelyn.

"Daniel was a good man."

Her face hardened.

"Don't."

"I know."

"You killed him."

"I ordered his house burned."

Her eyes filled with hatred.

"Why?"

"Samuel convinced me Daniel planned to kill Kendrick."

Kendrick laughed bitterly.

"And you believed him."

"I believed whatever protected you."

"No. You believed whatever protected your power."

Barrett closed his eyes.

"Maybe."

He coughed.

Blood appeared at his lips.

Evelyn looked away.

Barrett whispered:

"I didn't know Lucas survived until later."

"You kept him captive."

"Samuel did."

"You allowed it."

"Yes."

No excuses.

That somehow made it worse.

Kendrick stepped closer.

"Why Celeste?"

Barrett's eyes filled.

"She hated me."

"She saw you."

"She saw what I was."

He breathed slowly.

"And she was making you see it too."

Kendrick's jaw tightened.

"So you killed her because she was taking me away from you."

Barrett nodded.

A tear rolled down his face.

"I thought if she was gone, you would need me."

Kendrick whispered:

"I needed my wife."

Barrett broke.

For the first time, there was no powerful mobster.

No calculating uncle.

Just an old man who had destroyed everything he claimed to love.

"I know."

Kendrick stared at him.

"No. You don't."

He turned to leave.

Barrett called:

"Kendrick."

He stopped.

"I was proud of you."

Kendrick didn't turn around.

"You don't get to make that a gift."

Barrett cried silently.

Kendrick left.

Evelyn stayed another second.

Barrett looked at her.

"I'm sorry."

She stared at him.

"I spent six years imagining this moment."

"What did you imagine?"

"That I'd kill you."

Barrett gave a weak nod.

"Why don't you?"

Evelyn looked toward the hallway.

Penny was visible through the glass.

Holding Kendrick's hand.

Lucas sat nearby.

Titan slept beneath their chairs.

Evelyn looked back at Barrett.

"Because my father didn't raise a murderer."

She walked out.

Barrett Ashford died twenty-three minutes later.

No family beside him.

No empire.

No ceremony.

Just silence.

Three weeks later, Samuel Cross was indicted under federal racketeering statutes along with fourteen police officers, two judges, five syndicate captains, and three city officials.

The flash drives Daniel Mercer had hidden became the center of the case.

Barrett's organization collapsed with him.

Kendrick made a decision nobody expected.

He dismantled the most profitable illegal operations tied to the Ashford name.

Some captains rebelled.

Two tried to challenge him.

Both failed.

But Kendrick understood something now.

Fear could build an empire.

It couldn't build a home.

Evelyn prepared to leave New York.

She packed one suitcase.

Lucas had entered a federal protection agreement and planned to start over in Colorado.

Evelyn intended to join him.

Then someone knocked on her hotel door.

She opened it.

Penny stood there.

Alone.

Holding Titan's collar.

Evelyn looked into the hallway.

"Kendrick?"

No answer.

Penny held out a folded piece of paper.

Evelyn opened it.

A drawing.

Four figures.

Penny.

Titan.

Kendrick.

Evelyn.

Above them Penny had written:

DON'T GO.

Evelyn's eyes filled.

Then Kendrick stepped around the corner.

"You taught her emotional blackmail."

Evelyn laughed through tears.

"Pretty sure that's genetic."

His smile faded.

"I heard you're leaving."

"Tomorrow."

"For Colorado."

"Yes."

He nodded.

Silence stretched.

Then Kendrick said:

"I don't want you to."

Evelyn's heart started beating harder.

"That's not enough reason to stay."

"I know."

"Your daughter choosing me isn't enough either."

"I know."

"Your dog doesn't get a vote."

Titan grumbled.

Kendrick glanced down.

"He disagrees."

Evelyn smiled.

Then Kendrick looked at her.

Really looked at her.

"I'm not asking you to become part of my world."

"What are you asking?"

His voice softened.

"I'm asking if there's any chance we can build a different one."

Evelyn stopped breathing.

And then her phone rang.

Lucas.

She answered.

His first sentence erased her smile.

"Evie, we missed something in Dad's files."

"What?"

"There was one final account."

Kendrick watched her expression change.

Lucas continued.

"And somebody emptied it yesterday."

"Who?"

A pause.

Then Lucas said the name.

Evelyn slowly looked at Kendrick.

Because the account had been emptied by someone they believed was dead.

May you like

Celeste Ashford.
