Chapter 13 - Elena’s Price

Elena laughed when Quinn told her.

It was not amusement.

It was disbelief.

“Of course.”

David sat beside Quinn in the interview room.

“Of course what?”

“Mark kept the money.”

“You knew?”

“I knew there was an account.”

“Eleven million dollars?”

“I thought maybe two.”

Quinn asked, “Do you have the second authentication code?”

Elena looked at David.

“Yes.”

“Does Mark know?”

“He knows I memorized it.”

“Did you write it anywhere?”

“No.”

“Then you are the last thing standing between Mark and eleven million dollars.”

Elena’s face became still.

For the first time, David saw genuine fear for herself.

“What happens now?”

Quinn answered, “We move you.”

“Where?”

“You don’t need to know.”

Elena looked at David.

“He’ll use Leo.”

“No.”

“He will.”

David leaned forward.

“He’s not getting near my children.”

“You don’t understand Mark.”

“I understand enough.”

“No.”

Elena’s voice sharpened.

“You still think he sees Leo as a witness.”

“He doesn’t.”

David frowned.

“What does he see him as?”

“Leverage.”

She looked down.

“Mark kept Leo alive because of me.”

“What?”

“He knew I would never give him the account code if Leo died.”

David’s stomach tightened.

“So every time he threatened Leo…”

“He was threatening my conscience.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“Apparently I still had one.”

David stared at her.

“You imprisoned my son and then used protecting him to feel moral.”

“I know how it sounds.”

“It sounds exactly like what happened.”

Elena looked at him.

“I deserve prison.”

“I know that.”

“But Mark deserves something too.”

Quinn asked, “Will you cooperate?”

Elena took a slow breath.

“Yes.”

They built a controlled operation.

Elena would send Mark a message through an old emergency channel.

She would offer the code.

In exchange, he would leave the country and never contact the Vance family again.

Mark responded twenty-three minutes later.

PROVE IT’S YOU.

Elena sent a phrase only they knew.

His next message came instantly.

BRING DAVID.

David stared.

“Why me?”

Elena whispered, “He wants insurance.”

Quinn rejected the idea immediately.

David did not.

Sarah nearly left him over it.

“You have children.”

“I know.”

“You are not a police officer.”

“I know.”

“You already chased an armed man across a parking lot.”

“I know.”

“Stop saying you know!”

Sarah slammed both palms against the table.

Leo and Maya were outside with a federal protection agent.

David lowered his voice.

“If I don’t go, he may disappear.”

“Then let him!”

“He threatened Maya.”

“So your solution is to give him their father too?”

That silenced him.

Sarah’s eyes filled.

“We got Leo back.”

“I cannot spend the rest of my life wondering whether you’re coming home too.”

David took her hands.

“I need this finished.”

“So do I.”

“But finished does not mean you sacrificing yourself.”

In the end, Quinn created a compromise.

David would appear at the meeting.

But the location would be controlled.

Mark chose an abandoned industrial yard near the border.

Elena wore a wire.

David wore body armor beneath his jacket.

Agents surrounded the area beyond visible range.

The night air was cold.

Elena stood beside David beneath a broken floodlight.

“You hate me.”

David looked ahead.

“Yes.”

“I don’t blame you.”

“Good.”

“I used to think you had the easy life.”

David turned.

“My son spent fourteen months underground because you were jealous?”

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“But jealousy made it easier to lie to you.”

David said nothing.

She continued.

“Mom trusted you.”

“Dad respected you.”

“You walked away from the company and nobody punished you.”

“I stayed.”

“I did everything right.”

“Then one mistake became another.”

David looked at her.

“You’re still describing choices like weather.”

Elena absorbed the words.

“You’re right.”

Headlights appeared.

A pickup approached slowly.

Mark stepped out.

Alone.

His right arm was bandaged from the gunshot wound at the motel.

“Family reunion.”

David’s jaw tightened.

Mark smiled at Elena.

“You look terrible.”

“So do you.”

“Prison food?”

“Being related to you.”

Mark laughed.

“Give me the code.”

Elena held up a piece of paper.

“First tell me where the offshore account came from.”

Mark’s smile faded.

“You’re wearing a wire.”

“No.”

“You always touch your necklace when you lie.”

Elena froze.

Mark pulled a gun.

“DOWN!”

David tackled Elena as shots exploded.

Agents returned fire.

Mark dove behind his truck.

The yard erupted with shouting.

David dragged Elena behind concrete barriers.

“Are you hit?”

“No.”

Another shot struck the barrier.

Elena covered her ears.

“I knew this would happen!”

David almost laughed at the absurdity.

“You arranged kidnappings with this guy!”

“I’m aware!”

Mark’s truck roared.

He smashed through a chain-link fence.

Agents pursued.

Quinn ran toward David.

“Stay here!”

For once, he listened.

The chase lasted eleven minutes.

Mark abandoned the truck near a drainage canal.

A helicopter found him heading toward an old warehouse complex.

Teams surrounded the area.

Then Mark called David.

Quinn put the call on speaker.

“Mark?”

“You should have brought the real code.”

Elena shouted, “It was real!”

Mark laughed.

“No.”

“You changed one digit.”

Elena said nothing.

David looked at her.

She had.

Mark continued.

“You always were selfish, Elena.”

“You kidnapped a child to protect yourself.”

“You kept him like a pet.”

“At least I never pretended I was decent.”

Elena’s face twisted.

“Rachel begged you.”

“So did Leo.”

Mark replied.

“And both of you chose yourselves.”

Elena went silent.

David said, “It’s over.”

“No.”

Mark sounded calm.

“That’s the difference between you and your father.”

“Thomas understood something.”

“What?”

“There is no over.”

“There is only what people can prove.”

Quinn signaled technicians tracing the call.

Mark continued.

“Ask Thomas about the video from the well.”

David froze.

“What video?”

Mark laughed.

“You found audio.”

“You never found the camera.”

The call ended.

Elena stared at David.

“I didn’t know there was video.”

Quinn looked at her team.

“Find him.”

Twenty-two minutes later, police entered the warehouse.

Mark was gone.

But he had left something behind.

A laptop.

One video file was open.

The image showed the night Rachel died.

Thomas.

Elena.

Mark.

Rachel on the ground.

And young Leo hiding behind a low stone wall.

Then the camera captured something the audio had missed.

Thomas bent beside Rachel.

He placed two fingers against her neck.

Elena shouted for him to call an ambulance.

Thomas looked directly at Mark.

And shook his head.

Not indecision.

Not hesitation.

A clear answer.

No.

David stared at the screen.

May you like

His father had not merely failed to save Rachel.

He had consciously chosen to let her die.
