Chapter 14 - The Truth Dante Couldn't Bury

The warehouse was cold and dim.

Rows of empty medical crates lined the concrete floor.

Fluorescent lights flickered above.

Luca entered through the main loading door.

Two men searched him.

They found no weapon.

They took his phone.

Then they led him toward an office enclosed by glass walls.

Dante sat behind a desk.

Hannah was seated in a chair beside him.

Her wrists were bound.

Sophia sat on her lap.

The little girl looked exhausted.

When she saw Luca, her face lit up.

“Daddy!”

Luca moved forward.

A guard blocked him.

“Stay back.”

Luca stopped.

He looked at his brother.

“Let them go.”

Dante smiled.

“Where's the evidence?”

Luca held up a black case.

“Here.”

Dante nodded toward the guard.

The man took it.

Inside were a flash drive and several documents.

Dante opened the case.

Then looked up.

“Everything?”

“Everything you asked for.”

Dante smiled.

“Good.”

Luca looked at Hannah.

“Are you hurt?”

She shook her head.

“I'm okay.”

He looked at Sophia.

“Princess?”

She sniffled.

“I didn't cry too much.”

His heart broke.

“You're allowed to cry.”

Dante rolled his eyes.

“This is touching.”

Luca turned toward him.

“Enough.”

Dante stood.

“You don't get to give orders here.”

Luca stared.

“Then what do you want?”

His brother opened a drawer.

He removed a document.

“Sign this.”

Luca read the first page.

It was a statement admitting that he had fabricated accusations against the foundation while experiencing a mental health crisis.

It also surrendered temporary control of Moretti Holdings.

Luca almost smiled.

“You really think this will work?”

Dante leaned forward.

“With your signature, the board will have what it needs.”

“And the recordings?”

“I'll destroy them.”

“And Sophia?”

“She returns to Whitmore.”

Luca's expression turned cold.

“No.”

Dante stared.

“You don't have a choice.”

Luca looked at Sophia.

Then at Hannah.

He remembered Elena's final words.

Please listen to our daughter.

He turned back.

“You've made one mistake after another.”

Dante laughed.

“Oh?”

“You thought the only way to control people was to make them afraid.”

Dante shrugged.

“It works.”

“Until they stop believing you.”

His brother's smile faded.

Luca stepped closer.

“I know about the shell companies.”

Dante said nothing.

“I know about the forged medical reports.”

Silence.

“I know about Elena's insurance policy.”

Dante's jaw tightened.

“And I know Victor Sloane was following her the night she died.”

For the first time, Dante looked frightened.

Luca noticed.

He continued.

“What happened on that road?”

Dante looked away.

“An accident.”

“Then why did Sloane recover documents from her car?”

Dante stared at the floor.

Luca stepped closer.

“Answer me.”

His brother's face twisted.

“She wouldn't listen.”

Luca stopped.

Dante began pacing.

“I told her to leave the foundation alone.”

“What did you do?”

“She threatened to expose everything.”

“What did you do?”

Dante slammed his fist onto the desk.

“I DIDN'T ORDER HER KILLED!”

Silence.

Hannah closed her eyes.

Sophia flinched.

Luca felt sick.

“Then who did?”

Dante stared at him.

His face was pale.

“I wanted the documents.”

“Who?”

“Sloane.”

Luca took a slow breath.

“Tell me exactly what you ordered.”

Dante looked toward the guards.

Then back at Luca.

“I told him to stop her before she reached the police.”

“How?”

“He was supposed to follow her. Frighten her. Make her turn around.”

“And the car?”

Dante hesitated.

Luca stared.

“What did you do to her car?”

His brother swallowed.

“I told someone to interfere with it.”

The words hung in the air.

Luca felt as though the floor had disappeared.

“You tampered with Elena's car?”

Dante shook his head.

“I didn't know she'd be driving on that road.”

Luca stared.

“You knew she would drive somewhere.”

“I didn't want her dead.”

“But you made it possible.”

Dante's eyes filled.

For one fleeting moment, he looked like the younger brother Luca remembered.

Then he looked toward the evidence case.

“I can still fix this.”

Luca shook his head.

“No.”

Dante's expression hardened.

“You think the police will believe you?”

“They don't have to.”

Dante froze.

Luca looked toward the warehouse ceiling.

“Everything you've said has been recorded.”

His brother stared.

Then his eyes dropped toward Luca's shirt.

He reached forward and ripped open the collar.

The tiny transmitter came loose.

Dante stared at it.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then he shouted:

“GET THEM!”

The warehouse erupted.

A guard lunged toward Luca.

Luca shoved the desk into him.

Hannah grabbed Sophia and dropped behind the chair.

One of the other men rushed toward the rear exit.

Outside, police vehicles surged forward.

A loudspeaker demanded that everyone inside surrender.

Dante grabbed the evidence case.

He ran toward the loading dock.

Luca chased him.

“DANTE!”

His brother looked back.

For a moment, their eyes met.

Two men who had once promised to protect each other.

Now standing on opposite sides of everything that mattered.

Dante reached a locked exit.

He fumbled with the handle.

Luca caught up.

“It's over.”

Dante turned.

His face was wet with tears.

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

“I spent my whole life being your shadow.”

Luca stared.

Dante laughed bitterly.

“You got the company. The money. Father's respect. Elena.”

Luca frowned.

“Elena?”

“She saw what you could be. She believed in you.”

Dante's voice cracked.

“And when she started questioning me, I knew she'd tell you everything.”

Luca swallowed.

“You could have stopped.”

Dante shook his head.

“Not after the money.”

“You could have confessed.”

“And lose everything?”

Luca looked toward the office.

Hannah was holding Sophia.

Police officers were entering.

He turned back.

“You lost everything anyway.”

Dante's expression collapsed.

He slowly lowered the case.

Then he looked at his brother.

“I loved her too, Luca.”

Luca closed his eyes.

For a moment, he couldn't speak.

Then he answered:

“Love doesn't do what you did.”

The police reached them.

Dante was handcuffed.

He didn't resist.

As officers led him away, Sophia called from the office.

“Daddy!”

Luca turned.

She was standing beside Hannah.

Her legs were shaking.

But she was smiling.

He ran toward her.

She took two steps.

Then reached for him.

He caught her in his arms.

“I've got you.”

Sophia wrapped her arms around his neck.

“Did you keep your promise?”

Luca kissed her forehead.

“Yes, princess.”

She looked toward Hannah.

Then whispered:

“Now everybody knows.”

Luca held her tighter.

“Yes.”

He looked at the woman who had helped save his daughter.

“Now everybody knows.”

But the investigation wasn't over.

And when the police finally examined Elena's car records, they uncovered one last piece of evidence.

A mechanic had filed an anonymous report two weeks after the crash.

The report had been buried.

Its final sentence contained a name.

Not Dante.

Not Whitmore.

Someone else had authorized the work.

Someone Luca still trusted.
