Chapter 10 - The Escape Route

"Elena... get up," Nate gasped, rolling off the crib, cradling his limp, dislocated arm against his ribs.

Elena was already pulling herself up using the edge of the dresser. The mist was beginning to clear through the cracked window, but the toxic smoke from the burning lithium core was filling the room rapidly.

"I have her," Elena choked out, reaching into the crib.

Nate intercepted her with a glare of pure, unfiltered venom. "Don't you fucking touch her."

Elena recoiled as if slapped. She lowered her hands, weeping silently, her head bowed in profound shame. "Nate... I’m sorry... God, I’m so sorry—"

"Take the go-bag from the closet," Nate ordered, his voice flat, dangerously calm. "Get the keys to the truck. If you try to run, or if you call your company before we're out of this county, I swear to God I will let the police have every server log in this house."

Elena nodded frantically. "No police. We can't call the police, Nate. You don't understand who funded this."

"I don't care about your corporate overlords," Nate spat, scooping Maya up in his good arm. Maya buried her wet face into his neck, clinging to him like a burr. "We're leaving."

They stumbled down the darkened staircase. The house was eerie, empty, dead. All the smart displays along the hallway were dead, their screens flashing an ominous amber prompt: OFFLINE: RE-ESTABLISHING SECURE PROTOCOL.

They burst through the back kitchen door and out into the crisp, biting night air of suburban Connecticut.

The cold hit Nate like a bucket of ice water, clearing the lingering ketamine haze from his lungs. The gravel of the driveway crunched under their boots. Nate opened the passenger door of his beat-up F-150, gently placing Maya into her rear-facing car seat, buckling her in with trembling, bloody fingers.

"Dada," she whimpered, her little hand reaching out.

"I'm right here, sweet girl," he whispered, kissing her bruised forehead. "We're safe now."

Then, across the driveway, the truck’s headlights flickered on automatically.

Except Nate hadn’t touched the ignition.
