Chapter 10 - THE SON OF OUR ENEMY

Finding Adrian Vale became our next race.

The live feed carried no obvious location data.

Anthony’s team analyzed sound.

A train every forty-three minutes.

Church bells at noon.

Aircraft overhead.

A distinctive industrial hum.

Mia walked past the monitor.

She stopped.

“That bell.”

We looked at her.

“What?”

“I heard it when they took me.”

The same tunnel network.

Richard liked familiar infrastructure.

The feed likely came from somewhere near Beacon Hill.

We traced an old utility line from the crypt.

It ended beneath a vacant brownstone owned by a Vale shell corporation.

Shaw led the entry.

Adrian was inside.

Alive.

Dehydrated.

Terrified.

He looked nothing like the arrogant hotel supervisor Grace remembered.

People could change.

Or fear could sand arrogance away.

When Grace entered, Adrian cried.

“I’m sorry.”

She stayed several feet away.

“For what?”

“Everything.”

“Be specific.”

He swallowed.

“For what I did to you at the hotel.”

“For helping my father intimidate staff.”

“For thinking money meant nobody could tell me no.”

Grace listened.

She did not comfort him.

That was not her responsibility.

Then Adrian looked at Mia.

“I never filed anything against her.”

“We know.”

He nodded.

“My father used my identity.”

Shaw asked about Lorenzo Duca.

Adrian explained.

Years earlier, he discovered recordings in Richard’s private files.

One captured a conversation between Richard and Daniel.

They discussed Lorenzo’s death.

Officially, my grandfather died of a heart attack.

According to the recording, Richard had withheld medication during a medical emergency because Lorenzo planned to expose Meridian.

Daniel had arrived too late.

That explained Daniel’s complicated role.

He was guilty.

But not always aligned with Richard.

Adrian possessed a copy.

“Where?”

“My father took everything.”

“Backup?”

He looked at Grace.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Inside the old hotel.”

The hotel where Grace worked years earlier.

Richard had used it as a Meridian site.

Adrian hid a drive behind a ventilation panel when he first began gathering evidence against his father.

We retrieved it.

The drive contained enough evidence to destroy Richard Vale.

Financial crimes.

Extortion.

Illegal surveillance.

Kidnapping.

Obstruction.

Payments linked to deaths.

The scale stunned even Shaw.

But Richard remained missing.

Then the board hearing arrived.

I entered Duca Strategic Holdings headquarters with my mother beside me.

Grace stayed home with the children.

Evan accompanied Shaw to give federal testimony.

Daniel agreed to cooperate formally.

The hearing began at nine.

At 9:17, Richard Vale walked into the room.

Everyone stood.

Even I did.

Not out of respect.

Shock.

Federal agents had been looking for him.

Yet there he was.

Calm.

Smiling.

His attorney carried an injunction.

Richard had immunity.

Temporary.

Granted by a federal prosecutor in exchange for “national security cooperation.”

Shaw read the document.

Her face hardened.

“This office is compromised.”

Richard smiled.

“Meridian has friends.”

He sat opposite me.

“You should have taken the deal.”

“There was a deal?”

“There is always a deal.”

He proposed one.

He would resign from Duca Strategic Holdings.

He would release all claims against Mia’s trust.

He would ensure Grace and her children were financially secure forever.

In return, I would surrender the original ledger and destroy the server evidence.

The room waited.

I looked at Richard.

“No.”

He seemed genuinely disappointed.

“Why?”

“Because my six-year-old cousin taught me something.”

Mia was technically a cousin once removed.

No one cared.

“What?”

“She heard knocking.”

“And everyone told her she imagined it.”

Richard frowned.

I continued.

“You built your entire life assuming people eventually stop listening.”

“I’m listening now.”

I slid a tablet across the table.

On the screen was Adrian.

Live.

Richard’s face finally cracked.

His son said one sentence.

“Dad, I’m done lying for you.”

Federal agents entered.

Not Shaw’s compromised Boston office.

A task force from New York and Washington.

Shaw had gone around the corrupt prosecutor.

Richard stood.

“You think this ends Meridian?”

“No.”

I said.

“I think this begins the part where everyone sees it.”

He was arrested.

But he smiled as they led him away.

That smile bothered me.

Later, I understood why.

Richard knew something none of us did.

The original ledger was missing.

The secure case Anthony moved off-site had been opened.

No forced entry.

No alarm.

The ledger was gone.

Only five people knew where it had been stored.

Anthony.

Shaw.

My mother.

Me.

May you like

And Grace.

Someone inside our circle had betrayed us.
