Chapter 17 - THE FOURTH HEIR

Tessa did not cry.

Vincent almost wished she would.

Instead she became quiet.

Too quiet.

Gabriel Rizzo was called to the courthouse annex.

He arrived forty minutes later.

When he saw Tessa’s face, he knew.

That angered her more.

“You knew.”

Gabriel stopped.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Since before you were born.”

Tessa laughed once.

It sounded broken.

“That’s usually how fatherhood works.”

Gabriel flinched.

Vincent watched him.

This was not the same man who had faced guns without blinking.

Tessa’s disappointment frightened him.

“Why?”

she asked.

Gabriel looked toward the floor.

“Your mother wanted you away from us.”

“From criminals?”

“Yes.”

“Good call.”

“Tessa.”

“No.”

She stood.

“You do not get to say my name like we know each other.”

Gabriel absorbed it.

Vincent wanted to intervene.

He did not.

Some pain had to belong to the person feeling it.

Gabriel explained.

Elaine Morgan had worked as a nurse for Salvatore’s father.

She met Gabriel during family gatherings.

They had a relationship.

When she became pregnant, Salvatore learned about it.

By then Gabriel was involved in Black Crown’s early structure.

Salvatore believed blood relatives of architects and custodians could become liabilities.

“He threatened her?”

Tessa asked.

Gabriel’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

“So you sent us away.”

“I gave her money.”

“She refused most of it.”

“Isabella helped quietly.”

Tessa looked at Vincent.

His mother had protected a child from her own husband.

That changed his memory of her again.

“What claim could I have?”

Tessa asked.

Cole answered.

“Black Crown’s original charter named three founding families.”

“Corvino.”

“Hayes.”

“Rizzo.”

Tessa stared.

Matteo muttered, “You have got to be kidding.”

Cole continued.

“Each founding line provided a verification layer.”

“So she isn’t a successor.”

Vincent said.

“She’s an override.”

Cole nodded.

“Possibly.”

Lauren understood.

“If a Corvino successor, Hayes key, and Rizzo override agree…”

“They can shut it down.”

Vincent finished.

Tessa looked horrified.

“No.”

Gabriel said, “You may be the only person who can.”

“No.”

“Tessa.”

“I said no.”

She pointed toward all of them.

“This thing destroyed your families.”

“Shot him.”

She pointed at Vincent.

“Got Maya kidnapped.”

“Burned a house.”

“Turned half the city into targets.”

“And now you’re telling me I have some magic bloodline key?”

Her voice broke.

“I don’t want it.”

Vincent moved closer.

“Good.”

She looked at him.

He continued.

“Wanting it would worry me.”

Her expression softened.

“We don’t need you to inherit anything.”

he said.

“We need you to help us kill it.”

She looked around.

“How?”

Cole answered.

“We find the master node.”

“Where?”

Nobody knew.

Then Gabriel did something unexpected.

He looked at Vincent.

“Your mother knew.”

Vincent frowned.

“How?”

“Isabella found Salvatore’s final records.”

“She destroyed Dominic’s instructions.”

“But she kept something else.”

“What?”

Gabriel looked toward Marco.

“The piano.”

Vincent stopped.

His mother’s piano had burned with the mansion.

Marco swore.

“No.”

Gabriel continued.

“Isabella hid a data cylinder inside it.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

The fire.

Destroyed.

But Marco suddenly looked thoughtful.

“Not necessarily.”

Vincent turned.

“Before the fire, the restoration company removed the piano.”

“Why?”

“The soundboard cracked last winter.”

Vincent stared.

“Where?”

“Warehouse in Cicero.”

For the first time in hours, luck existed.

They drove there under federal escort.

Cole had finally decided that subtlety was dead.

The restoration warehouse smelled of sawdust and varnish.

Isabella’s Steinway sat near the back.

Vincent had not seen it since before the shooting.

He remembered his mother playing Chopin after midnight.

Always when Salvatore was gone.

Tessa touched the wood.

“She protected me.”

Vincent looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because that’s what she did when nobody was looking.”

He realized the sentence as he said it.

His mother had spent years appearing passive.

Maybe she had quietly spent those years undoing Salvatore’s damage.

Marco removed the lower panel.

Inside the piano frame was a steel cylinder.

Small.

Waterproof.

Gabriel exhaled.

“There.”

They opened it.

Inside were three items.

A handwritten letter.

A key.

And a cassette tape.

Dominic stared.

“Of course Dad’s secret empire uses a cassette.”

Vincent almost smiled.

The letter was addressed to Vincent and Dominic.

In Isabella’s handwriting.

Vincent read aloud.

My sons.

If you are reading this, then the secrets your father believed would protect you have finally become more dangerous than the enemies they were meant to control.

Vincent’s voice tightened.

Dominic looked down.

She continued.

Black Crown was not created by one man.

It was created by fear shared among several.

Your father believed that knowing everyone’s weakness would make our family safe.

Instead, it taught him to see weakness everywhere.

If Black Crown ever wakes after his death, do not inherit it.

End it.

Vincent stopped.

Tessa touched his shoulder.

He continued.

There is a final safeguard Salvatore never knew I discovered.

The three founding lines can authorize destruction.

Corvino.

Hayes.

Rizzo.

But the system requires one final act.

The Corvino heir must surrender all claims to the family holdings linked to Black Crown.

Dominic looked up.

“Meaning?”

Lauren answered.

“The harbor properties.”

“The shell companies.”

“Maybe Corvino Holdings itself.”

Vincent continued reading.

Power cannot be surrendered while its rewards are retained.

Your father designed that principle for enemies.

I pray you will use it against his legacy.

Love is not ownership.

Family is not obedience.

And respect born from fear is not respect.

Vincent stopped again.

The words hit directly.

His father had believed the opposite.

Vincent had spent twelve years following him.

Isabella’s final sentence was simple.

Be better than what you inherited.

Vincent folded the letter.

No one spoke.

Then the warehouse lights went out.

Marco drew his weapon.

Cole shouted.

Gunfire exploded outside.

Tessa crouched beside the piano.

Vincent pulled her down.

A vehicle crashed through the warehouse door.

Men in tactical gear poured in.

At their center stood Calder.

And beside him, hands bound, was Anthony.

Salvatore’s ring was still on his finger.

Calder smiled.

May you like

“Thank you for finding the key.”
