Chapter 14 - WHAT FORGIVENESS COSTS

Adrian did not ask Clara to stay.
He wanted to.
Every part of him wanted to.
Instead he carried her suitcase downstairs.
At the car, Mateo loaded the bags.
Olivia hugged Clara so hard neither wanted to let go.
“Please come back.”
Clara kissed her hair.
“I’ll visit.”
“You promise?”
“I promise.”
Then she held Emma.
For a long time.
Emma grabbed Clara’s necklace and smiled.
Clara started crying.
“Oh, baby.”
Adrian looked away.
He had never understood how much Clara had become part of their family until she was leaving it.
Finally, Clara handed Emma back.
Adrian said, “I need to tell you something.”
She waited.
“I am not going to ask you to forgive me.”
Clara looked surprised.
“You don’t owe me forgiveness. You don’t owe me another chance. And you don’t owe my children your life because you protected them.”
Adrian swallowed.
“What I did was wrong. Completely wrong. I let panic become violence. I judged you without listening. I humiliated you in the home where you had given us years of loyalty.”
Clara’s eyes filled.
“I’m going to live with that.”
Adrian continued.
“But I want you to know that I filed a statement with the police about what I did.”
Clara frowned.
“You reported yourself?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because being sorry doesn’t erase consequences.”
She stared at him for several seconds.
Then nodded.
“Good.”
Adrian almost smiled.
“Good?”
“Yes.”
“Fair.”
Clara climbed into the car.
Mateo started the engine.
Before they left, she rolled down the window.
“Adrian.”
“Yes?”
“Take care of those girls.”
“With my life.”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
He frowned.
She looked at him steadily.
“Take care of them with patience.”
Then she left.
Six months passed.
Vanessa pleaded guilty to charges connected to Rachel’s death, financial fraud, child endangerment, and conspiracy.
Ethan went to trial.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Adrian testified.
So did Clara by video from Chicago.
When the defense attorney asked if Adrian was an angry man capable of losing control, Adrian answered honestly.
“Yes.”
The courtroom went silent.
The attorney smiled.
“So you admit you’re violent?”
“I admit I slapped an innocent woman because I was scared and didn’t listen.”
“And we should trust your judgment?”
“No.”
Adrian looked at the jury.
“That’s exactly why you shouldn’t judge this case based on my judgment. Judge it based on the video, the bank records, the recordings, the kidnapping, and the gun Ethan pointed at me while my baby was in the room.”
The attorney had no answer.
Ethan was convicted.
After sentencing, Adrian returned home.
The house felt quieter.
Safer.
But incomplete.
That night, the doorbell rang.
Olivia ran downstairs.
Adrian followed.
He opened the door.
Clara stood on the porch.
With Mateo.

And two suitcases.
