Chapter 1 - GET OUT OF MY SIGHT

“GET YOUR HANDS OFF HIM!”
Clara’s voice cracked across the marble foyer like a gunshot.
Vanessa froze with one hand wrapped around eleven-year-old Leo’s wrist and the other reaching for the gold ring hanging from the chain around his neck.
For half a second, nobody moved.
Then Leo jerked backward.
“You’re hurting me!”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“Stop making a scene.”
She grabbed for the chain again.
Clara dropped the silver serving tray she had been carrying. Champagne glasses hit the floor and exploded across the white marble.
Every guest in the Blackwood mansion turned.
Clara didn’t care.
She rushed between Vanessa and the boy.
“Get your hands away from him right now.”
Vanessa stared at her as if a piece of furniture had suddenly spoken.
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me.”
Clara’s heart hammered, but she refused to step back.
She was twenty-seven years old, five-foot-four, wearing a cheap black waitress uniform and shoes that had been killing her feet for six hours.
Vanessa Whitmore stood almost six feet tall in designer heels and a silver evening gown that probably cost more than Clara made in six months.
But Clara had seen fear in Leo’s eyes.
That was enough.
Vanessa gave a cold laugh.
“Who do you think you are, little waitress?”
Clara stepped closer.
“Someone who won’t let you bully a child.”
Whispers moved through the room.
Leo pressed himself behind Clara.
His face was red.
His eyes were wet.
Vanessa noticed the crowd gathering and immediately changed her tone.
“You have no idea what happened.”
“I saw what happened.”
“You saw nothing.”
“I saw you grab him.”
Vanessa pointed toward the front door.
“Get out of my sight before I call security!”
Leo suddenly shouted from behind Clara.
“Please! This is my father’s house!”
Vanessa spun toward him.
“He isn’t here to save you today, kid.”
Silence swallowed the foyer.
Even Vanessa seemed to realize she had gone too far.
Clara slowly turned her head.
“What did you just say to him?”
Vanessa’s lips tightened.
Leo clutched the ring beneath his shirt.
“She tried to take my mother’s ring.”
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“You are lying, you little brat!”
“Don’t call him that,” Clara snapped.
“This is none of your business.”
“You made it my business when you put your hands on him.”
Vanessa looked toward two security guards standing near the staircase.
“What are you waiting for? Remove her.”
One guard stepped forward.
Leo grabbed Clara’s arm.
“No!”
Clara looked down at him.
“It’s okay.”
“No, it isn’t.”
His voice trembled.
“She wants the ring.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Only for a second.
But Clara saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not anger.
Not embarrassment.
Fear.
Clara lowered her voice.
“Why do you want that ring so badly?”
“I don’t.”
“Then leave it alone.”
Vanessa took another step.
“That ring belongs to this family.”
Leo shouted, “It belonged to my mom!”
“And your mother is dead.”
The words landed like a slap.
Leo’s face collapsed.
Clara’s blood boiled.
“You need to back away.”
Vanessa moved toward her.
“You need to remember your place.”
Clara’s jaw tightened.
“My place is right here.”
Suddenly, the massive front doors opened.
A man in a dark suit walked into the mansion, rain shining on his shoulders.
The room went dead silent.
Marcus Blackwood.
Owner of Blackwood Hotels.
One of the richest men in the state.
And Leo’s father.
His eyes moved across the broken glass.
Then to Clara.
Then to Vanessa.
Then to Leo.
“What is going on here?”
Leo broke away from Clara.
“Dad!”
He ran across the foyer.
Marcus dropped his briefcase and caught his son.
Leo buried his face against him.
“She tried to kick me out.”
Marcus went still.
“Who?”
Leo pointed.
“Vanessa.”
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
“Marcus, he misunderstood—”
“And she tried to take Mom’s ring.”
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Something dark entered his eyes.
“Is that true?”
“Of course not.”
“She grabbed me!”
“He was acting out.”
“You grabbed my son?”
“I was trying to calm him down.”
Clara cut in.
“She was trying to take the necklace off his neck.”
Vanessa’s head snapped toward her.
“You stay out of this.”
Marcus looked at Clara.
“Who are you?”
“Clara Dawson. I’m with the catering company.”
“And you saw this?”
“Yes.”
“Marcus,” Vanessa said quickly, “you’re really going to believe some temporary waitress over me?”
Marcus stared at her.
Then he looked at his son.
Leo’s wrist was bright red where Vanessa had held him.
Marcus’s voice became terrifyingly calm.
“Security.”
Both guards straightened.
“Take Vanessa upstairs.”
Her mouth fell open.
“What?”
“Now.”
“Marcus, please let me explain.”
“You’ll have your chance.”
“Marcus—”
“If you touch my son again, you won’t need to explain anything.”
One guard reached for Vanessa’s elbow.
She ripped her arm away.
“You’re making a huge mistake.”
Marcus stepped toward her.
“No. I think I’ve been making one for two years.”
Gasps moved through the guests.
Vanessa looked humiliated.
Then furious.
Then strangely calm.
She leaned close to Marcus.
“You have no idea what your son is carrying around his neck.”
Marcus frowned.
Vanessa smiled.
And for the first time, Clara felt cold.
Marcus looked down at Leo.
“Show me the ring.”
Leo hesitated.
Then slowly pulled the chain from beneath his shirt.
A plain gold ring rested against his chest.
Marcus stared at it.
“That was your mother’s wedding ring.”
“I know.”
“Where did you get it?”
Leo swallowed.
“Mom gave it to me before she died.”
Marcus’s face changed.
“She never told me.”
“She said I had to keep it safe.”
“From what?”
Leo looked toward Vanessa.
“From her.”
Vanessa stopped struggling.
Marcus stared at his son.
“What exactly did your mother tell you?”
Leo’s fingers closed around the ring.
“She said if Vanessa ever tried to take it…”
His voice dropped.
“…I should open it.”
Marcus frowned.
“Open it?”
Leo pressed his thumbnail against a tiny groove Clara hadn’t noticed.
There was a click.
The ring split along an invisible seam.
Inside was a rolled strip of paper.
Marcus took it with shaking fingers.
Vanessa whispered, “No.”
Marcus unrolled the note.
His face went white.
Clara watched his eyes move across one short sentence written in faded blue ink.
Then he looked directly at Vanessa.
“What did you do to my wife?”
May you like
And Vanessa stopped breathing.
