Chapter 2 - Mrs. Vale

Bianca backed away.

“The police?”

Her father, Charles Sterling, pushed through the crowd.

He was sixty-three, silver-haired, perfectly dressed, and furious.

“Adrian.”

His voice was controlled.

“Whatever misunderstanding happened here, we can handle it privately.”

Adrian ignored him.

He reached Elena and gently touched the side of her face.

“Are you hurt?”

“I’m okay.”

“You’re bleeding.”

“I said I’m okay.”

His eyes stayed on the swelling near her cheekbone.

Elena lowered his hand.

“Later.”

Adrian nodded.

That single word told him everything.

She didn’t want rescue.

She wanted truth.

Bianca found her voice again.

“Dad, this woman attacked me.”

Half the room turned toward her.

Elena almost laughed.

“You slapped me first.”

“You were disrespectful!”

“So that gives you permission?”

Bianca looked at Adrian.

“Do you even know what she did?”

Adrian’s stare was cold.

“I know exactly who she is.”

“I mean tonight.”

“So do I.”

Bianca frowned.

Charles stepped between them.

“That’s enough.”

Adrian looked at him.

“I agree.”

Charles lowered his voice.

“Come into my office.”

“No.”

“Adrian.”

“Whatever you need to say can be said here.”

Charles glanced at the guests.

“This is a charity gala.”

Elena wiped another drop of blood from her lip.

“Then maybe the charity deserves to hear it too.”

Something flashed across Charles’s face.

Fear.

Small.

Fast.

But Elena saw it.

So did Adrian.

Bianca did not.

She pointed at Elena.

“Why was she dressed like staff?”

Finally, the question everyone wanted answered.

Adrian looked at his wife.

Elena answered.

“Because I asked to be.”

Whispers erupted.

Bianca laughed nervously.

“That makes no sense.”

“It makes perfect sense.”

Elena glanced toward the servers standing against the walls.

Some had been avoiding eye contact all evening.

Now several looked at her.

“I worked banquet service for six years before I met Adrian.”

Bianca snorted.

“How touching.”

Elena continued.

“I know what it feels like to be invisible in a room full of powerful people.”

That quieted several guests.

“And three weeks ago,” Elena said, “I received a letter.”

Charles’s face tightened.

Adrian noticed.

Elena reached into the inside pocket of her service jacket.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“A woman who worked events for Sterling Grand claimed staff were being threatened, underpaid, and forced to sign false payroll records.”

Charles stepped forward.

“That is a lie.”

Elena looked at him.

“I didn’t name you.”

Charles stopped.

A murmur rippled through the crowd.

Adrian’s expression hardened.

Elena unfolded the letter.

“She also claimed money meant for the Children’s Harbor Foundation was being moved through fake event invoices.”

That changed everything.

Several board members of the charity were standing inside the ballroom.

One of them, an older woman in a blue gown, spoke first.

“What money?”

Charles raised his hands.

“This is absurd.”

The ballroom doors opened again.

Two detectives entered with three uniformed officers.

Charles went pale.

Bianca looked at her father.

“Dad?”

Detective Nora Reyes walked directly toward Adrian.

“Mr. Vale.”

“Detective.”

“We have the warrant.”

Every conversation stopped.

Charles turned toward the hotel manager.

“Do not let them upstairs.”

Detective Reyes heard him.

She raised an eyebrow.

“That would be obstruction, Mr. Sterling.”

“I didn’t mean—”

“I heard what you meant.”

Bianca grabbed her father’s sleeve.

“What warrant?”

Charles pulled away.

“Stay quiet.”

“But—”

“Bianca.”

His tone silenced her.

Elena watched them carefully.

Something was wrong.

Charles wasn’t acting like a man surprised by an investigation.

He was acting like a man who knew exactly what they would find.

Detective Reyes faced the room.

“We’re executing a search warrant involving financial records, employee payroll files, internal surveillance archives, and electronic devices connected to Sterling Events.”

Gasps broke out.

One of the charity board members whispered, “Oh my God.”

Bianca stared at Elena.

“You did this.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“You came here dressed like a maid to spy on us!”

“I came here because someone asked for help.”

“Who?”

Elena looked toward the service entrance.

A young woman stood there.

She was maybe twenty-four.

Dark hair.

White banquet jacket.

Terrified eyes.

When Charles saw her, every bit of color left his face.

Bianca followed his stare.

“Who is that?”

The young woman stepped into the ballroom.

“My name is Marissa Cole.”

Charles shouted.

“Get her out of here!”

Detective Reyes immediately moved between them.

Marissa’s hands were shaking.

But she kept walking.

She stopped beside Elena.

“I wrote the letter.”

Bianca stared at her father.

“Dad?”

Charles said nothing.

Marissa looked directly at Bianca.

May you like

Then she said the one sentence that turned a financial investigation into something far darker.

“The missing money isn’t the worst thing your father did.”
