Chapter 18 - THE SECOND HEIR

The words followed us back to federal headquarters.
One more heir.
I tried not to think about them.
Failed.
Lucas slept in my arms in a secure medical room.
Doctors examined him.
No serious injuries.
Mild sedative in his system.
Bruising on one wrist.
Otherwise safe.
I wanted to stay beside him forever.
But Keene was speaking.
And every minute mattered.
Bell interviewed him.
I watched from behind glass.
Keene wanted a deal.
Of course.
Men who spent years protecting powerful people always discovered morality after handcuffs.
Bell asked.
“What second heir?”
Keene smiled.
“Immunity.”
“You're charged with kidnapping.”
“Attempted murder.”
“Conspiracy.”
“Potential homicide.”
“I'd start talking.”
Keene leaned back.
“Full immunity.”
Bell laughed.
“No.”
“Then enjoy surprises.”
Sylvester entered the observation room.
“DNA report came back.”
I turned.
“What DNA?”
“Blood from Edmund’s abandoned vehicle.”
“And?”
“Margaret.”
She had been injured during abduction.
Good.
Then Sylvester looked strange.
“What?”
“There's something else.”
“About Keene?”
“No.”
“Lucas.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“Hospital ran routine blood work.”
“And?”
“They found a genetic marker.”
I stared.
“What marker?”
“Nothing dangerous.”
“Then why are you looking like that?”
He hesitated.
“Lucas’s blood type.”
“O positive.”
“No.”
“What?”
“AB negative.”
I blinked.
“No.”
“I know.”
“That’s impossible.”
Nathaniel was O positive.
I am A positive.
An AB child requires a B allele neither of us had.
My ears rang.
“No.”
Sylvester looked devastated.
“Maybe records were wrong.”
“They weren't.”
I had donated blood.
Nathaniel carried a donor card.
Impossible.
Keene’s words.
One more heir.
I walked into interrogation room.
Bell stood.
“Claire.”
I stared at Keene.
“What did you do?”
He smiled.
“You finally noticed.”
I moved closer.
“Lucas is Nathaniel’s son.”
“Yes.”
The answer confused me.
“Then explain his blood type.”
Keene looked at Bell.
“Deal.”
I slammed both hands on table.
“Explain.”
He flinched.
Good.
Bell pulled me back.
“Enough.”
Keene sighed.
“Nathaniel Cross was not O positive.”
“Yes, he was.”
“No.”
“I saw his medical records.”
“Fabricated.”
My mind stopped.
“What?”
“Cross family altered medical records after his teenage surgery.”
“Why?”
“To support infertility claims.”
My skin prickled.
“What surgery?”
Keene smiled.
“None.”
I stared.
“The entire story that Nathaniel couldn't have children was manufactured.”
“By whom?”
“Graham.”
“Why?”
“To control succession expectations.”
“But Nathaniel knew?”
“Not until adulthood.”
“Then why keep lying to me?”
Keene shrugged.
“Ask the dead man.”
I wanted to hit him.
Bell asked.
“What was Nathaniel’s actual blood type?”
“B negative.”
Then Lucas’s blood type became possible.
I exhaled.
Keene continued.
“Lucas is his son.”
“Confirmed.”
“Multiple tests.”
“Then second heir?”
Keene’s smile returned.
“Nathaniel had another child.”
My stomach twisted.
Before me?
After?
Impossible.
“When?”
“Eight years ago.”
Before Lucas.
Before me.
“Mother?”
Keene looked toward Sylvester.
“Marianne Vale.”
The room went silent.
Sylvester stopped breathing.
“No.”
Keene laughed.
“You didn't know?”
Sylvester’s face drained.
“Marianne lost the baby.”
“No.”
Keene shook his head.
“Marianne was told the baby died.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Bell leaned forward.
“Explain.”
“Vale family doctor.”
“Cross money.”
“Infant transferred.”
“Why?”
“Sebastian Vale.”
Sylvester looked sick.
“My father?”
“Didn't want a Cross-Vale child.”
“Where is the child?”
Keene shrugged.
“Arthur knows.”
Sylvester lunged.
Bell caught him.
I stepped back.
Everything rearranged.
Marianne’s grief.
Nathaniel’s guilt.
The trust.
Another heir.
If the child lived, succession changed again.
“Boy or girl?”
“Girl.”
“Name?”
“Hospital records list Baby Vale.”
“Current identity?”
Keene smiled.
“Deal.”
Bell stared.
“You're going to prison.”
“Then no name.”
Sylvester stepped toward glass.
“Bell.”
“No.”
“I can make him talk.”
“I know.”
“That is exactly why no.”
Keene chuckled.
Bell leaned across table.
“You think this information buys immunity.”
“It buys my life.”
“From Arthur?”
Keene stopped smiling.
There.
Fear.
Bell saw it.
“Arthur kills loose ends.”
Keene said nothing.
“Graham?”
Nothing.
“Eleanor?”
Nothing.
Bell lowered his voice.
“You're afraid of Mercer.”
Keene’s eyes shifted.
Bell continued.
“Help us find the girl.”
“Protection.”
“I can discuss protection.”
“No immunity?”
“No.”
Keene thought.
Then whispered.
“Her name is Sophie.”
Sylvester closed his eyes.
Bell asked.
“Last name?”
“Reed.”
“Age?”
“Eight.”
“Location?”
Keene looked toward me.
“Chicago.”
My heart raced.
“Family?”
“Adopted.”
“Parents?”
“Mother died.”
“Father?”
“No father listed.”
“Guardian?”
Keene hesitated.
Then smiled bitterly.
“Eleanor Cross.”
I stared.
Eleanor.
She had hidden Nathaniel’s daughter.
For eight years.
“Does Marianne know?”
“No.”
“Does Sophie know?”
“No.”
“Why does Arthur want Lucas if Sophie exists?”
Keene answered.
“Because trust succession requires acknowledgment.”
“Nathaniel knew about Sophie?”
“No.”
“Then she isn't named.”
“Correct.”
“Lucas remains controlling heir.”
“Yes.”
“Then Sophie matters because?”
Keene looked at Sylvester.
“Vale shares.”
Sylvester understood.
“My father.”
“Yes.”
“If Sophie is Marianne’s daughter, she inherits through Marianne.”
“Eventually.”
“And if Marianne dies?”
Sylvester’s face went hard.
“Sophie becomes direct heir.”
Keene nodded.
“Arthur wanted control of both dynasties.”
Cross through Lucas.
Vale through Sophie.
Children.
Always children.
Adults built empires.
Then used children as locks and keys.
Bell immediately sent agents to locate Sophie.
Eleanor was questioned.
She finally broke.
Yes.
Sophie lived.
Yes.
She had known for six years.
She discovered the truth after Nathaniel died while reviewing family medical files.
She secretly located the child.
She paid for school.
Housing.
Security.
But never told Marianne.
“Why?” I demanded through video.
Eleanor cried.
“Because Graham threatened her.”
“He said if Marianne learned, Arthur would kill the girl.”
“So you hid her.”
“Yes.”
“From her mother.”
“Yes.”
I hated the pattern.
Everyone hiding things to protect someone.
Every secret creating a new danger.
Agents reached Sophie’s address.
Apartment empty.
Neighbor reported Eleanor’s private security collected the girl that morning.
“Where?” Bell asked.
Eleanor went pale.
“I didn't authorize that.”
Bell stared.
“Who has access to your security instructions?”
She whispered.
“Graham.”
My stomach dropped.
Graham had Sophie.
Arthur was missing.
Two old men.
Two heirs.
One war.
Then Bell received a message.
From Graham.
Not Arthur.
Video.
Sophie sat beside him.
Unharmed.
Terrified.
Graham looked into camera.
“Claire.”
“I need your help.”
I stared.
He continued.
“Arthur is going to kill me.”
A pause.
“And when I'm dead, he will kill both children.”
Sylvester leaned closer.
May you like
Graham’s face hardened.
“If you want Lucas to live past next week, bring me Eleanor.”
