Chapter 13 - Vanessa Goes Public

By sunrise, Vanessa had posted everything.
Private fertility records.
Photographs.
A video claiming Claire had knowingly stolen her child.
It was a lie wrapped around enough truth to become dangerous.
News vans surrounded the hospital.
Reporters shouted questions.
“Mr. Cole, did your wife raise another woman’s biological child?”
“Is Vanessa Hart Noah’s biological mother?”
“Did your employee attempt to drown the baby?”
Maya heard that question and stopped walking.
Even now.
Even with everything they knew.
Her name was still attached to the lie.
Ethan stopped too.
He turned toward the reporters.
“No.”
Cameras moved closer.
He continued.
“Maya Reed saved my son’s life.”
Maya stared at him.
Ethan faced every microphone.
“I failed her when I believed an accusation without evidence. She jumped into that pool when the rest of us were nowhere near my child.”
A reporter shouted, “Was the drowning staged?”
“We have evidence the stroller was deliberately tampered with.”
“By Vanessa Hart?”
“That is under investigation.”
Ethan looked at Maya.
“I owe Maya more than an apology.”
She swallowed.
“Don’t do this for cameras.”
“I’m not.”
“Then find Vanessa.”
They did.
Or Vanessa found them.
At 10:14 a.m., she walked into Cole Biotech headquarters wearing a white suit.
Not green.
White.
Like she wanted to look innocent.
She was carrying a folder.
And she had three lawyers beside her.
“She’s surrendering?” Maya asked.
Brooks shook his head.
“No.”
Vanessa entered the boardroom.
Ethan followed.
Maya watched through the glass wall.
Vanessa sat at the opposite end of the table.
“I want custody.”
Ethan laughed.
“You nearly drowned Noah.”
“You can’t prove that.”
“You kidnapped him.”
“Alex kidnapped him.”
“You ordered it.”
“Prove it.”
Ethan leaned forward.
“You killed Claire.”
Vanessa’s eyes stayed calm.
“Prove that too.”
Her attorney slid papers across the table.
A custody petition.
Vanessa was claiming biological maternity.
Maya whispered, “She planned this.”
Brooks nodded.
Vanessa continued.
“You were emotionally unstable after Claire’s death.”
Ethan stared at her.
“You created that grief.”
“You fired a trusted employee based on one accusation. You signed guardianship control to a woman you barely knew. You allowed your father to interfere with your company. Should I continue?”
Every sentence was designed to make Ethan look reckless.
And some of them were true.
Vanessa smiled.
“I don’t need you in prison, Ethan.”
“What do you want?”
“My son.”
“He is not your possession.”
“He is biologically mine.”
“You violated two people to create him.”
Her smile vanished.
Then Maya noticed something.
Vanessa was wearing a microphone.
Not hidden.
A tiny legal recording device clipped beneath her jacket.
She wanted Ethan angry.
She wanted threats.
Evidence for court.
Maya entered the room.
“Vanessa.”
Vanessa turned.
“You’re not invited.”
Maya smiled.
“No. But Claire is.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
Maya placed another memory card on the table.
The color left Vanessa’s face.
“You missed one recording.”
Vanessa stood.
“What recording?”
Maya pushed play.
Claire’s voice filled the boardroom.
But this recording was different.
Vanessa’s voice was on it too.

And the first thing everyone heard was Vanessa saying:
“If the brakes fail on a wet road, nobody will call it murder.”
