Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN IN BLUE

“NO!”
Maya Brooks saw the stroller rolling toward the pool before anyone else did.
She dropped the tray in her hands.
Crystal glasses exploded across the stone patio.
The gray stroller was already moving fast.
Too fast.
And standing behind it was Vanessa Hale.
One hand was still stretched forward.
She had pushed it.
Maya saw everything.
The stroller struck the pool’s stone edge, tipped forward, and disappeared into the dark water.
A baby screamed once.
Then the water swallowed the sound.
“OLIVER!”
Maya ran.
Someone shouted behind her, but she never stopped.
She kicked off one shoe, missed the other, and jumped fully dressed into the pool.
Cold water slammed into her chest.
Her black uniform dragged at her body as she forced herself deeper.
The stroller was sinking.
Its wheels turned slowly above it while tiny bubbles rushed toward the surface.
Maya opened her eyes underwater.
There.
Baby Oliver Caldwell was trapped beneath the safety bar.
His little hands moved wildly.
Maya grabbed the stroller.
The buckle wouldn’t open.
Come on.
Come on!
Her lungs burned.
She pulled harder.
Nothing.
Oliver’s movements grew weaker.
Maya wrapped both hands around the plastic latch and yanked until something snapped.
The buckle released.
She pulled Oliver free and kicked toward the surface.
Her chest felt ready to burst.
Then her head broke through the water.
Oliver wasn’t crying.
“No, no, no.”
Maya held him above the water and fought toward the edge.
“Help me!”
Two guests rushed forward.
Maya shoved Oliver into their arms, climbed out, and immediately took him back.
She laid him on a towel.
“Oliver. Come on, sweetheart.”
His face looked pale beneath the patio lights.
Maya cleared his mouth and gave emergency breaths the way she had learned in a childcare safety course.
“Come on.”
Oliver coughed.
Water spilled from his mouth.
Then he screamed.
Maya almost collapsed.
“That’s it. Cry. Please cry.”
She pulled him against her chest.
“I saved him!”
A voice came from behind her.
“What the hell happened?”
Maya turned.
Ethan Caldwell stood at the villa doors.
Oliver’s father had gone white.
He ran across the patio.
Maya held the baby toward him.
“Mr. Caldwell, Vanessa—”
“She pushed him!”
Vanessa’s voice cut through the night.
Maya froze.
Vanessa stood several feet away in an elegant blue evening dress.
Her hands covered her mouth.
She looked terrified.
Convincingly terrified.
Ethan stared at her.
“What?”
Vanessa pointed directly at Maya.
“I saw her push Oliver into the pool.”
Maya felt the world tilt.
“What?”
Vanessa began crying.
“I tried to stop her.”
“That’s a lie!”
Guests gathered around them.
Whispers spread.
Ethan took Oliver from Maya.
His eyes changed.
The relief disappeared.
Suspicion took its place.
“Maya,” he said quietly. “Tell me she’s lying.”
“She is.”
“You pushed my son?”
“No!”
Maya pointed toward Vanessa.
“She did it. I saw her put both hands on the stroller.”
Vanessa gasped.
“She’s trying to blame me because I caught her!”
“Caught me doing what?”
“You’ve been obsessed with Oliver since you came here.”
Maya stared at her.
“That is insane.”
Ethan looked from one woman to the other.
Oliver cried against his father’s chest.
Then security guards came running from the house.
Ethan’s voice turned cold.
“Don’t let Maya leave.”
Maya’s mouth dropped open.
“Mr. Caldwell—”
“Stay where you are.”
Maya looked around desperately.
At the guests.
The staff.
The guards.
Nobody moved to help her.
Then she saw it.
Between two trees at the far end of the pool.
A tiny red light.
Blinking.
Maya lifted a shaking hand.
“The camera.”
Everyone turned.
Vanessa stopped crying.
Only for half a second.
But Maya saw it.
“The garden camera recorded everything.”
Ethan stared toward the red light.
Then at Vanessa.
May you like
And Vanessa’s face went completely still.
Because she knew Maya was right.
