Chapter 3 - Someone We Trust

Claire ran.

She hit the staircase so fast that Detective Brooks had to grab the railing to keep pace.

“Madison!”

The little girl stood near the front doorway.

She was not hurt.

She was pointing outside.

A black SUV had stopped across the street.

Its headlights were off.

For two seconds it remained there.

Then the engine roared.

The vehicle disappeared around the corner.

Officer Hall ran outside.

Brooks was already calling in the plate.

Madison threw herself into her mother’s arms.

“That was Uncle Ryan’s car.”

Claire held her tighter.

“Are you sure?”

“It has the broken light.”

Ryan Mercer’s Range Rover had a cracked right taillight.

Claire had noticed it at Thanksgiving.

So had Madison.

The license plate returned to a rental company.

Not Ryan.

That did not make Claire feel better.

Brooks put the memory card into an evidence sleeve.

“We leave now.”

Back at the hospital, they connected the card to an isolated police laptop.

It contained three folders.

PROJECT HARBOR.

ACCIDENT.

R.M.

The first folder held hundreds of engineering files.

Daniel had been chief structural engineer at Mercer Development Group.

The company had been founded by his father and was now jointly controlled by Daniel and Ryan.

Claire knew Daniel had been working late for months.

She had assumed it was another difficult commercial project.

She had been wrong.

Project Harbor was a $240 million redevelopment contract involving apartment towers near the Baltimore waterfront.

Daniel’s notes documented structural shortcuts.

Inferior steel.

Altered concrete test results.

Forged safety certifications.

Claire stared at the numbers.

“What does this have to do with Ryan?”

Detective Brooks opened the R.M. folder.

Emails appeared.

Ryan Mercer’s name was everywhere.

Approve substitution.

Do not copy Daniel.

Testing company has been handled.

We cannot afford another delay.

One message was especially short.

D needs to stop asking questions.

Claire covered her mouth.

Brooks clicked the ACCIDENT folder.

Photographs of Daniel’s car appeared.

Brake line.

Undercarriage.

A close-up of something silver.

Daniel had photographed his own vehicle three days before the crash.

“Why would he photograph that?”

Brooks zoomed in.

“Because he already suspected somebody tampered with it.”

Another file contained an audio recording.

Daniel’s voice filled the room.

“If you’re hearing this, something happened before I could reach the FBI.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Daniel continued.

“Ryan has been falsifying inspection reports on Harbor Point.”

“The buildings are unsafe.”

“I confronted him.”

“He said I was going to destroy everything Dad built.”

“I told him I was going to federal authorities Monday.”

“That night someone came into our garage.”

“I found tool marks near the brake line the next morning.”

“I moved the car and started documenting everything.”

Claire whispered, “He never told me.”

The recording continued.

“I haven’t told Claire because I don’t know who Ryan has inside our circle.”

“I’m sorry.”

“If something happens to me, protect Madison.”

Madison sat quietly beside her mother.

She understood her name.

That was enough.

Then Daniel’s voice changed.

Lower.

More frightened.

“There’s something worse.”

“I found payments connected to Dr. Samuel Vale.”

Claire looked up.

“Who is that?”

Brooks typed the name.

Her face changed.

“County General.”

Claire felt cold.

That was where Daniel had been taken after the crash.

Brooks continued reading.

“Emergency medicine physician.”

Claire’s eyes widened.

“He signed Daniel’s death certificate.”

The room went silent.

Daniel’s recording ended with one final sentence.

“If Sam Vale is involved, Ryan isn’t just trying to silence me.”

“He has a plan for what happens after I die.”

The hospital room door opened behind them.

Everyone turned.

A nurse stood there.

“Mrs. Mercer?”

Claire rose.

“What happened?”

“Your husband is awake.”

Daniel looked stronger.

Not strong.

But stronger.

His voice was still rough.

Claire sat beside him.

“We found the memory card.”

His eyes closed briefly.

“Good.”

“Daniel, Ryan is involved.”

He nodded.

“Vale too?”

“We know about him.”

Daniel turned his head toward Madison.

His daughter had fallen asleep curled in a chair.

Something in his face broke.

“I thought I’d never see her again.”

Claire squeezed his hand.

“You almost didn’t.”

Daniel stared at the ceiling.

“I remember the crash.”

Brooks switched on a recorder with his permission.

“Tell me.”

“I was driving home.”

“Brake pedal went soft.”

“Then nothing.”

“Car hit the barrier.”

“I remember glass.”

“People shouting.”

“Ambulance.”

He swallowed.

“Then County General.”

“Did you see Dr. Vale?”

Daniel nodded.

“He knew me.”

“How?”

“Ryan’s golf club.”

Claire stared.

Daniel continued.

“I was conscious.”

“But I couldn’t move.”

Brooks leaned forward.

“When?”

“In the ER.”

“After the crash?”

“Yes.”

“My eyes wouldn’t open.”

“My body wouldn’t respond.”

“But I heard them.”

“Who?”

“Vale.”

“And another man.”

“Ryan?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

Claire looked physically sick.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Ryan said, ‘Make sure he doesn’t wake up this time.’”

Madison stirred in the chair.

Claire lowered her voice.

“What happened next?”

“I felt an injection.”

“Then nothing.”

“For a while.”

“You were pronounced dead.”

Daniel’s eyes opened.

“I know.”

“How?”

“I heard parts of it.”

Brooks stared at him.

“You were conscious while they believed you were dead?”

“Not constantly.”

“Like drowning.”

“Coming up.”

“Going under.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with terror.

“I heard a zipper.”

Claire’s hand flew to her mouth.

Daniel continued.

“I heard the morgue drawer.”

“I heard someone say my wife had been notified.”

“And I couldn’t move.”

Claire began crying silently.

Daniel looked at Madison.

“Then later I heard music.”

“What music?”

“The chapel organ.”

His voice shook.

“And people crying.”

“I knew where I was.”

He shut his eyes.

“I tried everything.”

“Nothing moved.”

“Until Madison climbed in.”

The little girl opened her eyes.

“Daddy?”

Daniel looked at her.

“When you hugged me, I heard you.”

Madison stood and came closer.

“I told you not to be scared.”

“I know.”

Daniel began crying.

“You were the only thing I could hear clearly.”

Madison placed her small hand over his.

“That’s why you woke up.”

No doctor would later confirm that.

No test could prove it.

But Daniel never doubted it.

Detective Brooks waited.

Then she asked the question that mattered.

“Mr. Mercer, why would Ryan keep you in a near-death state instead of simply killing you?”

Daniel stared at her.

“I don’t know.”

His expression shifted.

“Unless…”

“What?”

Daniel looked toward Claire.

“When Dad died, his trust split voting control between us.”

Claire nodded.

“Fifty-fifty.”

“If I die, my shares don’t go directly to Claire.”

Brooks frowned.

“Where do they go?”

“To a temporary trustee until Madison turns twenty-five.”

“Who is the trustee?”

Daniel looked toward his sleeping daughter.

“Ryan.”

Nobody spoke.

Brooks slowly leaned back.

“So if you were legally dead…”

Daniel finished the sentence.

“My brother controlled the entire company.”

Claire whispered, “And Harbor Point.”

Daniel nodded.

“For as long as nobody discovered I was alive.”

Brooks’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression hardened almost immediately.

“When?”

She stood.

“Lock the hospital.”

Claire felt the room tilt.

“What happened?”

Brooks ended the call.

“Dr. Samuel Vale was found dead twenty minutes ago.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Where?”

“In his garage.”

Brooks paused.

“Police found a note beside him.”

“What did it say?”

She looked directly at Daniel.

May you like

It contained only six words.

DANIEL MERCER WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO WAKE.
