Chapter 9 - THE MAN LUCA TRUSTED MOST

Patrick disappeared for six hours.

Not dramatic disappearance.

His car remained at home.

His phone remained on.

But he answered nobody.

That frightened Luca more.

Patrick had worked beside Antonio Moretti for thirty-two years.

He had watched Luca grow up.

Taught him how to read a balance sheet.

Attended his high-school graduation.

Spoken at Antonio’s funeral.

If Vanessa was betrayal, Patrick was something closer to family.

Luca sat in his father’s old office while Daniel traced Bellmore Capital.

I stood near the window.

I should not have been there.

I knew that.

But no one had asked me to leave.

Eventually Luca said:

“You can go.”

I looked at him.

“Do you want me to?”

“No.”

“Then why say it?”

“Because none of this is your responsibility.”

“My father was threatened.”

He looked away.

“Because of my family.”

“No.”

“Emma.”

“Because of people who made choices.”

He looked at me again.

I had repeated his own lesson back to him.

He noticed.

“So you’re staying.”

“Yes.”

“You’re stubborn.”

“That seems to be useful around you.”

Almost a smile.

Then Daniel entered.

“We found Patrick.”

“Where?”

“Caruso’s.”

Of course.

We drove there.

Patrick sat alone at the table beneath the photograph of Antonio and Michael Caruso.

Teresa stood behind the counter with her arms folded.

“He ordered coffee.”

She looked offended.

“And didn’t drink it.”

Patrick looked exhausted.

Luca sat across from him.

“What is Bellmore Capital?”

Patrick did not answer immediately.

Then:

“Your father’s insurance policy.”

Luca frowned.

“It owns my debt.”

“Yes.”

“How is that insurance?”

“Because Antonio created it.”

Everyone stared.

“What?”

“Not directly.”

Patrick pulled out a folder.

“In 2002, he became convinced Carlo Bellini would eventually use the old financing history against Moretti Holdings.”

“So he bought his own debt?”

“Quietly.”

“Through Bellmore?”

“Yes.”

“Why hide it?”

“Because if lenders knew Moretti-linked entities controlled the notes, the structure would collapse.”

Daniel frowned.

“Who owns Bellmore now?”

Patrick looked at Luca.

“You do.”

Silence.

“Then why does the ownership record say P.R.?”

“I’m trustee.”

Luca’s face changed.

“You control nine hundred million dollars of debt against my company.”

“Technically.”

“And never told me.”

“Your father made me promise.”

Luca stood.

“I am so tired of that sentence.”

Patrick nodded.

“You should be.”

“Why did my father create a weapon pointed at his own company?”

“Because if Bellini interests ever acquired enough Moretti debt to force liquidation, Bellmore could counter them.”

“Then why did Vanessa think Carlo owned it?”

“Because Richard told her that.”

Luca paced.

“Richard manipulated both sides.”

“Yes.”

“To what end?”

Patrick looked toward the old photographs.

“Control.”

Daniel sat.

“Explain.”

“Richard spent thirty years making sure neither Moretti nor Bellini could expose him without damaging themselves.”

“He had records on both families.”

“Yes.”

“And Bellmore?”

“He discovered it years ago.”

“Could he access it?”

“No.”

“Who could?”

Patrick looked at Luca.

“You.”

Luca stopped.

“I didn’t know it existed.”

“Exactly.”

“And you?”

“Yes.”

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“Then Richard needed Patrick.”

Everyone turned.

Patrick nodded.

“He approached me six months ago.”

“What did he want?” Luca asked.

“My signature.”

“For?”

“Transfer of Bellmore control.”

“To whom?”

Patrick looked at Vanessa.

“Her.”

Vanessa stared.

“I never knew.”

“He wanted you to own the debt before the wedding.”

Luca’s face hardened.

“So after marriage, Vanessa controls the debt and gains access to my family trust.”

Patrick nodded.

“Richard could destabilize Moretti Holdings, then force both of you into whatever settlement protected him.”

Vanessa looked sick.

“He used me.”

“Yes.”

Luca’s response was cold.

“You also used yourself.”

She flinched.

He did not apologize.

Patrick continued.

“I refused.”

“What happened?”

“He threatened to expose Antonio.”

“And?”

“I told him to do it.”

Luca stared.

“You were willing to expose my father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Antonio left me one final instruction.”

Patrick took an envelope from his jacket.

Old.

Sealed.

Luca recognized the handwriting immediately.

His father’s.

Patrick gave it to him.

“If Richard ever uses my shame against Luca, tell Luca everything. If the company survives, good. If it does not, let it die.”

Luca stared at the sentence.

Antonio had finally reached the same conclusion Elena had.

Thirty years late.

Truth over empire.

Patrick continued.

“That is why I disappeared today.”

“Why?”

“I was getting this.”

He placed a flash drive on the table.

“What is it?”

“Everything Antonio collected after Elena died.”

Luca stared.

“Everything?”

“Not enough to prosecute at the time.”

“But?”

“Enough to understand.”

Daniel opened a laptop.

The files included photographs.

Bank records.

Richard’s transfers.

Carlo’s payments.

Walter’s name.

Then video.

Antonio Moretti appeared on screen.

Recorded in 2004.

Older.

Gray at the temples.

“I failed Elena.”

Luca froze.

The recording continued.

“I knew Richard was stealing.”

Antonio looked directly into the camera.

“I knew Carlo threatened her.”

A pause.

“I did not believe either man would hurt her.”

His voice cracked.

“When Walter told me about the furnace, I went to Taylor Street.”

Teresa gripped the table.

“Richard was there.”

Luca stopped breathing.

“We fought.”

The blood.

Antonio touched a scar near his knuckle.

“I wanted to kill him.”

Silence.

“I did not.”

His eyes lowered.

“Then Carlo showed me the Bellini records and threatened to expose everything.”

Antonio looked ashamed.

“I chose silence.”

Luca closed his eyes.

“I told myself I was protecting Luca.”

The screen flickered.

“I was protecting myself.”

No one moved.

Then Antonio said:

“There is one thing Richard never knew.”

Everybody leaned closer.

“Elena had already changed the family trust.”

Daniel paused the video.

“What?”

Luca looked at him.

“Play it.”

Antonio continued.

“She removed my authority over her shares.”

Patrick stared.

“I never knew.”

“She gave temporary control to Rosa.”

Luca whispered, “Aunt Rosa.”

“And if anything happened to Rosa before Luca reached forty…”

Antonio took a breath.

“…control passed to a community beneficiary connected to Caruso’s.”

Teresa stared.

“My restaurant?”

“Yes.”

Antonio continued.

“Richard has searched for the original trust for years.”

Luca looked at Vanessa.

She had found it.

Then lost it.

Antonio’s final sentence changed everything.

“If Luca is watching this, find Rosa before Richard does.”

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Teresa’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her face immediately changed.

“What?”

We all looked at her.

She listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“Someone broke into Rosa’s old apartment.”

Luca stood.

“When?”

“Last night.”

“Was anything taken?”

Teresa looked at him.

“The landlord said the only thing missing was a framed photograph.”

Luca’s face hardened.

“What photograph?”

Teresa whispered:

“Rosa and Elena standing in front of Caruso’s.”

I remembered the photograph Richard stole from Luca’s office.

Rosa knows where the first one is.

Someone was collecting photographs.

Not documents.

Photographs.

Then it hit me.

“Maybe the pictures are the documents.”

Everyone turned.

I continued.

“What if Elena didn’t hide the evidence behind the photographs?”

May you like

I looked at Luca.

“What if she hid it inside them?”
