Chapter 1 - THE KICK

Vanessa Sterling kicked the maid in front of three hundred guests.
Then she smiled for the cameras.
The ballroom of the Whitmore Grand Hotel had been glittering with crystal chandeliers, champagne glasses, diamonds, and people rich enough to pretend they had never seen anything ugly in their lives.
Then Vanessa lifted one silver heel and drove it toward Naomi Carter’s stomach.
She expected Naomi to fall.
Naomi caught her ankle in midair.
Just like that.
One hand.
No stumble.
No scream.
No panic.
The ballroom went dead silent.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
Her emerald-green gown shimmered beneath the chandeliers as she stood awkwardly on one foot, her face frozen somewhere between rage and disbelief.
“Let go of me!”
Naomi didn’t move.
She was thirty-four, dressed in a burgundy housekeeping uniform and beige waist apron, her dark hair pinned neatly behind her head.
For the last six weeks, most people in the Sterling mansion had barely noticed her.
Vanessa had noticed her plenty.
Naomi was the maid who didn’t cry when Vanessa insulted her.
The maid who didn’t apologize for things she hadn’t done.
The maid who calmly picked up shattered glasses after Vanessa threw them.
The maid who somehow made Vanessa furious simply by refusing to look afraid.
Now Naomi slowly lowered Vanessa’s leg.
“Please don’t make me take this any further.”
A woman near the front gasped.
Someone whispered, “Did the maid just threaten her?”
Vanessa jerked her ankle free.
“You think you can put your hands on me?”
“You tried to kick me.”
“You embarrassed me!”
“No,” Naomi said quietly. “You did that yourself.”
A few guests looked away to hide smiles.
That made Vanessa snap.
“You’re fired.”
Naomi nodded.
“All right.”
Vanessa blinked.
She hadn’t expected that.
Usually, when she threatened the staff, people begged.
They had mortgages.
Children.
Medical bills.
Immigration paperwork.
Debt.
Vanessa knew exactly which pressure point belonged to which employee.
Naomi gave her nothing.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You don’t seem to understand what I said.”
“I understood perfectly.”
“I can make sure you never work in this city again.”
Naomi looked at her for a long moment.
Then she said, “That would be difficult.”
A murmur rippled across the room.
Near the stage, Vanessa’s fiancé, billionaire real-estate developer Julian Cross, finally pushed through the stunned crowd.
“What happened?”
Vanessa immediately transformed.
Her shoulders dropped.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Her voice shook.
“She attacked me.”
Naomi almost smiled.
Almost.
Julian stopped.
“What?”
“She grabbed me!”
“You kicked her,” someone said.
Vanessa spun toward the voice.
A teenage waiter immediately looked at the floor.
Vanessa pointed at Naomi.
“She’s been hostile toward me for weeks.”
Naomi said nothing.
“She hates me because I asked her to do her job.”
Still nothing.
Vanessa grabbed Julian’s arm.
“I want security.”
Two hotel guards approached.
Naomi calmly removed her apron.
She folded it once.
Then twice.
She placed it on a nearby table.
Julian stared at her.
Something about that movement bothered him.
Too controlled.
Too deliberate.
Like Naomi had known this moment was coming.
One of the guards reached for her arm.
Naomi looked at him.
“Don’t.”
The guard hesitated.
Vanessa laughed sharply.
“Oh, please. What are you going to do? Fight everyone in the room?”
Naomi reached into her pocket.
For the first time that night, Vanessa looked nervous.
Naomi pulled out a phone.
Not her personal phone.
A second phone.
She turned it around.
On the screen was an audio recording.
Running.
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
“What is that?”
Naomi finally looked directly at her.
“Six weeks.”
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Naomi continued.
“Six weeks of you talking when you thought no one important was listening.”
Julian’s expression changed.
“Naomi…”
But Vanessa was already moving toward her.
“What did you record?”
Naomi took one step back.
Vanessa whispered, “What did you hear?”
Naomi’s voice remained calm.
“Enough.”
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Three men in dark suits walked inside.
The man in front held up a badge.
“Naomi Carter?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa looked between them.
“What is this?”
The man answered without looking at her.
“Ms. Carter, we need to speak privately.”
Naomi nodded.
Vanessa grabbed Julian.
“Who is she?”
Julian didn’t answer.
Because for the first time all night, he was staring at Naomi like he was wondering the exact same thing.
May you like
And Naomi knew the truth was finally ready to come out.
