Chapter 12 - The Secret Inside the Silver Bird

The silver pendant was smaller than Renick remembered.

Barely the size of a quarter.

One wing was slightly bent.

A thin line crossed its belly.

Renick held it beneath the desk lamp.

Elise had worn it on a chain beneath her blouse.

He had given it to her on their first wedding anniversary.

“I thought it was lost,” he whispered.

Belle stood beside him.

“Can it open?”

Renick examined the edge.

“I don't know.”

Nathaniel leaned closer.

“There's a seam.”

Renick turned the pendant.

A tiny mechanism clicked.

The two halves separated.

Inside was a microSD card.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Belle stared.

“She hid evidence inside her necklace.”

Renick looked toward the door.

“Get Agent Mercer.”

Special Agent Caroline Mercer had spent twelve years investigating organized crime and financial exploitation.

She had little patience for wealthy men who suddenly wanted to cooperate after their own families became targets.

Renick respected that.

Because he had earned her distrust.

When Mercer entered, she looked at the pendant.

“Where did you find this?”

“My daughter had it.”

“How long?”

“We don't know.”

Mercer took photographs before allowing an evidence technician to secure the card.

“We'll examine it on an isolated system.”

Renick nodded.

“Whatever's on there belongs to the investigation.”

Mercer studied him.

“You understand that it may implicate your own companies.”

“Yes.”

“And possibly you.”

“Yes.”

“You still want us to examine it?”

Renick looked toward Elise's photograph.

“I want the truth.”

Mercer held his gaze.

Then nodded.

The recovered data took several hours to process.

Belle spent that time with Micah in a quiet room.

Brinley stayed nearby with Renick's permission and Agent Mercer's approval.

The two children played a card game.

For a little while, the estate almost felt normal.

Micah laughed when Brinley cheated by hiding a card beneath her rabbit.

“Hey!”

She giggled.

Belle smiled.

Then looked toward the hallway.

Armed security officers stood at every entrance.

There was nothing normal about this house.

At 9:42 p.m., Agent Mercer returned.

Her face was serious.

“We recovered seventeen files.”

Renick stood.

“What kind?”

“Financial records, photographs, and audio.”

“Can we see them?”

“Some.”

Mercer opened a laptop.

The first file showed financial transfers between Harbor Finch subsidiaries and shell companies.

The second contained scanned documents identifying families under pressure.

The third was an audio recording.

Elise's voice filled the room.

“If you're hearing this, something has gone wrong.”

Renick stopped breathing.

Fourteen months.

Fourteen months since he'd heard his wife's voice.

He gripped the back of the chair.

Elise continued.

“I've been looking into Callum's shipping contracts for six months.”

A pause.

“I found payments connected to fraudulent custody transfers and children who disappeared from official records.”

Belle covered her mouth.

“I confronted him.”

Elise's voice trembled.

“He said I didn't understand the family business.”

Another pause.

“He said Renick would never let me expose it.”

Renick closed his eyes.

“He was wrong,” Elise whispered.

“I think my husband would choose our daughter over everything.”

Renick bowed his head.

“I only need to make sure he gets the chance.”

The recording crackled.

Then Elise spoke more urgently.

“Callum knows I've copied the files.”

A door sounded in the background.

She lowered her voice.

“I don't have much time.”

Another sound.

Footsteps.

Then Elise whispered:

“If anything happens to me, find Julia. She knows where the rest is.”

The recording ended.

Renick stood motionless.

Mercer waited.

Belle watched him carefully.

He was a man who had spent his life believing he could control danger.

Now he was learning that his power had hidden evil instead of stopping it.

Finally, he whispered:

“I let him stand beside my wife's grave.”

No one answered.

“I let him hold my daughter.”

His voice broke.

“I trusted him.”

Mercer closed the laptop.

“We have enough to expand the investigation.”

“Then arrest him.”

“We need to establish the chain of evidence and locate the missing people first.”

Renick looked furious.

Mercer held up a hand.

“If Callum realizes exactly what we have, he may destroy evidence or hurt someone.”

Belle spoke.

“Then find the children before he knows.”

Mercer nodded.

“That's the priority.”

Renick turned toward her.

“Can you protect Micah and Brinley?”

“We're arranging that.”

Before the discussion could continue, Mercer's phone rang.

She listened.

Her expression changed.

“When?”

A pause.

“Are you certain?”

She looked toward Renick.

“Understood.”

She ended the call.

Nathaniel straightened.

“What happened?”

Mercer looked at Belle.

Then at Renick.

“We found Julia Penn.”

Renick took a step forward.

“Is she alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“A hospital outside Burlington.”

“Can she talk?”

Mercer's face tightened.

“She already has.”

Renick stared.

“What did she say?”

May you like

The agent took a breath.

“She says Elise Kavanaugh survived the crash.”
