Chapter 12 - THE MESSAGE SHE SENT

My phone buzzed almost immediately.
Then Rachel's.
Then Luis's.
Vanessa had sent a group email from an account I did not recognize.
Subject: DANIEL MERCER - MENTAL HEALTH EMERGENCY.
The message went to my former business partners, two relatives, our bank manager, and someone at the police department.
It claimed I had returned from overseas paranoid, unstable, and delusional. It said I had threatened Vanessa and fabricated financial accusations because I was "suffering a breakdown after a failed sale."
Attached was a letter from a therapist.
The letter said I had a history of violent episodes.
I had never met the therapist named on it.
"You've been preparing this," I said.
Vanessa's hands shook, but she held her chin high.
"I prepared to protect myself."
"With a fake medical letter?"
"Prove it's fake."
I almost admired the nerve.
Almost.
Then the doorbell rang.
Vanessa smiled wider.
"That was fast."
Two police officers stood outside.
She had called them before dinner.
The report was already in motion.
One officer asked us to separate. I showed mine the protective order involving Mom, the fraud report, and the case number from the detective already reviewing the camera evidence.
Vanessa cried in the living room.
Real tears this time.
"He's controlling," she told the other officer. "He came home different. He won't let me leave."
The officer looked at the open front door.
"Ma'am, are you saying he physically prevented you from leaving?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"Emotionally."
That hesitation mattered.
Then Marcus stepped out of his car and approached the porch.
"I was here the whole time," he said. "She was free to leave."
Vanessa's face changed.
The officers called a supervisor.
The detective on Mom's case called back.
Within twenty minutes, the atmosphere shifted completely.
The focus was no longer on my supposed breakdown.
It was on the forged letter.
One officer asked Vanessa where she got it.
"A doctor."
"Which doctor?"
"It's on the letter."
"We just called that office. They say the doctor retired three years ago and never treated your husband."
Vanessa said nothing.
The officer's radio crackled.
Then came another surprise.
"We have a unit at the rear of the property," he said. "There's a male subject trying to enter through the garage."
I knew before they said the name.
May you like
Trent.
And according to the officer, he was carrying a crowbar and a document shredder.
