Chapter 16 - Edmund’s Secret

The revelation nearly broke Richard.
Edmund had secretly donated genetic material through the same fertility network years earlier.
Caroline knew the egg belonged to Victoria.
She apparently did not know the male donor was Edmund.
Neither did Richard.
The truth emerged only after forensic investigators recovered clinic archives.
Maya was legally Richard’s daughter.
Emotionally Richard’s daughter.
But biologically she was his father’s child.
His half-sister.
Richard sat alone for hours.
Then Maya entered the room.
“You look sad.”
Richard forced himself to smile.
“I learned something complicated.”
“Bad?”
“No.”
He thought carefully.
“Just strange.”
Maya climbed beside him.
“Are you still my dad?”
Richard looked at her.
The answer was immediate.
“Always.”
That was the only truth that mattered.
Martin’s fraudulent paternity report was quickly exposed.
But the motive behind it mattered.
He had wanted access to genetic testing records.
By filing the petition, he hoped the court would order samples and disclose sealed clinic information.
He was searching for Noah through genetic databases.
Federal authorities shut the attempt down.
Meanwhile Harrison Langley’s health deteriorated.
He summoned Richard one final time.
“I changed the trust again.”
Richard was tired of trusts.
“Leave Maya out of your money.”
Harrison smiled weakly.
“That is exactly what I did.”
He had converted most of Maya’s potential inheritance into an independent charitable foundation.
Maya would receive a modest protected trust when she became an adult.
She would never control hundreds of millions.
No one could marry her for it.
Kidnap her for it.
Manipulate her for it.
Richard finally understood Harrison’s intention.
Remove the prize.
Two days later Harrison died peacefully.
The news went public.
Martin’s financial motive disappeared overnight.
Richard hoped that would weaken him.
Instead, Martin became more reckless.
He kidnapped David Mercer from federal transport.
A vehicle was found abandoned.
One officer was injured.
David and Martin vanished.
Then Richard received a video.
David sat tied to a chair.
Martin stood behind him.
“You want the truth about Caroline?”
Richard stared at the screen.
Martin continued.
“Your lawyer has one confession left.”
David looked terrified.
“Richard…”
Martin leaned closer.
“Tell him.”
David shook his head.
Martin slammed his hand against the chair.
“Tell him.”
David looked into the camera.
“Caroline called me the night she died.”
Richard’s chest tightened.
“She was still alive when I arrived.”
Richard whispered, “No.”
David began crying.
“Victoria had left.”
“Caroline was on the floor.”
“She asked me to call an ambulance.”
Richard already knew what came next.
David looked into the camera.
“I didn’t.”
Richard could barely breathe.
“I thought if Caroline survived, everything would come out.”
“She knew about Edmund.”
“She knew about the accounts.”
“She knew about me.”
“So I left her there.”
Martin smiled behind him.
Richard shut off the video.
For years he had imagined Caroline’s final moments surrounded by doctors.
Instead, she had been alone.
Betrayed twice.
First by Victoria.
Then by David.
Richard went upstairs.
Maya was sleeping.
He sat beside her.
Caroline had died protecting this little girl.
Richard made himself a promise.
The cycle would end with him.
No more secrets disguised as protection.
No more lies for the sake of reputation.
No more family name valued above family itself.
The next morning Richard held a press conference.
He disclosed the existence of the financial conspiracy.
His father’s involvement.
David’s betrayal.
Victoria’s charges.
He did not disclose Maya’s genetic history.
That belonged to her.
But he destroyed Martin’s greatest weapon.
Secrecy.
Standing before dozens of cameras, Richard said one final thing.
“My family spent years hiding truth because we were afraid of scandal.”
“That fear gave dangerous people power.”
“I will not give them that power anymore.”
Watching from an unknown location, Martin Cross saw the speech.
May you like
And smashed the television.
