Chapter 8 - The Secret Rebecca Hid in Plain Sight

Rebecca Bennett had been a meticulous woman.

She labeled containers.

Saved receipts.

Organized photographs by year.

When Daniel lost his car keys, she could usually tell him exactly where he'd left them.

But there was one thing she never organized in an obvious place.

Her most important evidence.

Daniel spent the next morning searching through Rebecca's remaining possessions.

A box of old birthday cards.

A stack of medical records.

A wedding album.

A shoebox filled with letters.

Nothing.

At noon, Peter arrived with a report from a digital forensics specialist.

"Daniel, we found an unusual reference in Rebecca's notes."

"What kind?"

"She mentions something called the Bluebird File."

Daniel frowned.

"Bluebird?"

"Does it mean anything to you?"

He shook his head.

Then he stopped.

"Wait."

Peter looked up.

"Rebecca used to call Lily her little bluebird."

"Why?"

"Because Lily sang before she could speak clearly."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"She'd wake up in her crib making these little sounds. Rebecca said she sounded like a bird announcing the morning."

Peter nodded.

"Did Rebecca keep anything with a bird on it?"

Daniel thought.

Then he stood so quickly his chair rolled backward.

"The music box."

"What music box?"

"Rebecca's grandmother gave it to her. A wooden box with a painted bluebird on the lid."

"Where is it?"

"Lily's room."

The music box sat on Lily's dresser.

Daniel picked it up carefully.

The painted bird had faded over the years.

When he opened the lid, a soft melody began to play.

Rebecca used to wind it at bedtime.

Lily loved the song.

Daniel turned the box over.

There was nothing unusual about the bottom.

Peter examined the interior.

"Any hidden compartment?"

"Not that I know of."

He gently lifted the velvet lining.

Something moved underneath.

A thin rectangular object.

Peter looked at Daniel.

"Do you want to open it?"

Daniel nodded.

Together, they lifted the lining enough to remove a small USB drive sealed in a plastic sleeve.

A handwritten label read:

BLUEBIRD — COPY 2.

Daniel sat down.

For a moment, he couldn't breathe.

Rebecca had hidden it in their daughter's music box.

A place she knew Daniel would never throw away.

The drive contained hundreds of documents.

Payment records.

Copies of contracts.

Emails.

Internal Westbridge correspondence.

And a video recorded by Rebecca.

Daniel watched it with Peter and Detective Reed.

Rebecca appeared on the screen wearing the gray cardigan he remembered from her final winter.

She sat at their kitchen table.

Her face looked tired.

But her voice was clear.

"If you're watching this, I hope it means I finally found the courage to show you what I've been doing."

Daniel pressed a hand over his mouth.

Rebecca continued.

"I've been working with Sarah Mercer to document how a group of people are exploiting families through private care agreements and fraudulent financial arrangements."

She held up a folder.

"Adrian Vale handles legal paperwork. Helen Voss runs the placements. There are other people involved, but I haven't identified all of them."

Daniel leaned toward the screen.

"Rebecca..."

She continued.

"Parents are told their children need emergency care. They sign complicated documents. The children are sent away, and the adults controlling the placements sometimes gain access to money, trusts, or property."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Some children are being mistreated."

She looked directly into the camera.

"I've spoken to one boy who said he was punished whenever he asked to go home."

Owen.

Daniel felt his stomach twist.

Then Rebecca said something unexpected.

"There's a woman involved who uses different surnames."

Peter leaned forward.

Rebecca held up a photograph.

A younger Marissa.

"She presents herself as a caregiver or spouse. Her current name is Marissa Mercer."

Daniel stared at the screen.

"She's helped persuade fathers to authorize placements they didn't understand."

Rebecca paused.

"I'm trying to find out how much she knows."

The video continued for several minutes.

Rebecca described what she'd verified, what remained uncertain, and the agencies she intended to contact.

Then she looked down.

"I haven't told Daniel because I'm afraid he'll try to confront these people himself."

She smiled sadly.

"That's who he is."

Daniel began crying.

Rebecca's voice softened.

"If something happens to me, I need him to know that none of this was his fault."

He bowed his head.

"And I need him to protect Lily."

The video ended.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Peter reached for the keyboard.

"There's another file."

Daniel wiped his face.

"What?"

"An audio recording."

They played it.

Rebecca's voice came first.

"Why are you following me?"

Then a man's voice.

"You've been asking questions that don't concern you."

Rebecca sounded angry.

"Children are being hurt."

"You're making accusations you can't prove."

"Then why are you here?"

A pause.

Then the man spoke again.

"Your husband has a successful business, doesn't he?"

Daniel went cold.

Rebecca answered.

"Leave my family out of this."

The man laughed softly.

"Then leave ours alone."

The recording ended.

Peter looked toward Detective Reed.

"Do you recognize the voice?"

Reed's jaw tightened.

"I want it professionally compared with known recordings."

Daniel already knew who he suspected.

Adrian Vale.

That evening, Hannah Mercer arrived to review what investigators could appropriately share with her.

When Daniel showed her Rebecca's photograph with Sarah and Owen, Hannah broke down.

"That's my stepmother."

Daniel was confused.

"Sarah?"

Hannah shook her head.

"Sarah was Owen's biological mother. She and Dad were divorced, but she never stopped fighting for him."

Daniel nodded.

Hannah pointed at Rebecca.

"My dad said your wife was the only person who believed Sarah."

Daniel swallowed.

"Rebecca was trying to help."

"She tried to warn my father before he signed those papers."

Daniel looked down.

"So did Rosa with me."

For a moment, the two families' histories seemed to fold into each other.

Different children.

Different fathers.

The same machinery of lies.

Hannah wiped her eyes.

"Do you know what Owen told me in his last letter?"

Daniel shook his head.

"He said Marissa used to visit him."

Daniel's pulse quickened.

"When?"

"After Dad died."

"What did she want?"

Hannah's voice dropped.

"She kept asking whether anyone had given him a blue flash drive."

Daniel stared at the music box.

Marissa had been searching for Rebecca's evidence for years.

And she'd married the one man who might unknowingly possess it.

At 10:03 p.m., Daniel received a message from Marissa.

We need to talk.

He didn't answer.

Another message appeared.

You found it, didn't you?

Daniel showed Peter.

"Don't respond yet," Peter advised.

Then a third message arrived.

Rebecca should have listened.

Daniel felt anger rise through his chest.

He typed one sentence.

What did you do to my wife?

The response came almost immediately.

Ask Adrian.

Daniel stared at the words.

Then his phone rang.

Adrian Vale.

Peter nodded toward the recording equipment Detective Reed had arranged for a controlled contact.

Daniel answered.

Adrian spoke without greeting.

"Mr. Bennett, we need to resolve this before more people get hurt."

Daniel forced himself to stay calm.

"What happened to Rebecca?"

Adrian sighed.

"Your wife involved herself in matters she didn't understand."

"Did you threaten her?"

"Daniel, you're making assumptions."

"Did you send someone to follow her?"

Silence.

Then Adrian said, "You're asking the wrong question."

Daniel gripped the phone.

"What's the right one?"

Adrian's voice dropped.

"Why did Rebecca make a second copy?"

The call ended.

Peter looked toward Reed.

The detective slowly stood.

"Daniel."

"What?"

"If that's a genuine reference to a second copy, it means someone may still be looking for the original."

Daniel looked at the little music box.

May you like

And suddenly understood.

Rebecca hadn't hidden evidence in only one place.
