Chapter 6 - THE SECRET MY FATHER-IN-LAW BURIED

Richard’s face became unreadable.

Daniel stepped toward his father.

“What did she mean?”

“Nothing.”

Rachel laughed.

“Of course.”

“Shut up.”

“Oh, now you want silence?”

“Rachel.”

“You built this family on silence.”

Evelyn whispered her daughter’s name, but Rachel was finished protecting anyone.

She looked at Daniel.

“Ask Dad about 2009.”

Richard moved toward her.

“Enough.”

“Ask him.”

Daniel looked between them.

“What happened in 2009?”

Nobody answered.

Rachel smiled at me.

“You didn’t find that one, did you, Claire?”

I hadn’t.

And she knew it.

Richard turned toward Nathan.

“Freeze the transfer. Call our attorney. Nobody leaves.”

Rachel stood.

“You think you’re still in charge?”

“I am still your father.”

“That stopped meaning something a long time ago.”

Then she looked at Grant.

“And before you start acting like some innocent victim, maybe ask your perfect father-in-law how he got enough money to save Whitmore during the recession.”

Richard’s hands shook.

Evelyn whispered, “Please.”

Daniel looked at his mother.

“You know?”

She began to cry.

That was all the answer we needed.

Richard sat heavily.

“In 2009, Whitmore was weeks from bankruptcy.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I remember.”

He had been twenty-one.

Rachel twenty-four.

Richard continued.

“The banks stopped lending. Customers weren’t paying. I needed four million dollars.”

“Where did it come from?”

Richard stared at the table.

“Your grandfather’s trust.”

Daniel frowned.

“Grandpa’s trust was divided between us.”

“Yes.”

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“Now he’s getting there.”

Richard swallowed.

“I borrowed against the trust.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Our trust?”

“I intended to repay it.”

“How much?”

Richard said nothing.

Rachel answered.

“All of it.”

Daniel stepped back.

“You used our inheritance?”

“To save the company.”

“Without telling us?”

“You were children.”

“I was twenty-one!”

“And the company employed seven hundred people!”

Richard finally shouted.

“Was I supposed to watch seven hundred families lose their paychecks so my children could inherit money at thirty-five?”

Silence.

For one second, I understood him.

Then Rachel said:

“He forged our authorization.”

Everything changed.

Daniel looked at his father.

“Is that true?”

Richard’s eyes closed.

That was another answer.

Rachel leaned back.

“You all want to call the police? Go ahead. Marcus has copies.”

Richard looked at her.

“So this is blackmail.”

“It became insurance.”

“You threatened your own father?”

“I protected myself from a hypocrite.”

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“Dad.”

Richard opened his eyes.

“I paid almost all of it back.”

“Almost?”

“Daniel
”

“How much is missing?”

“Eight hundred thousand.”

Rachel laughed.

“Plus interest.”

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

My Thanksgiving ambush had exposed one crime.

Now the whole family was bleeding secrets.

Then Nathan interrupted.

“The bank stopped the transfer.”

Richard exhaled.

“But
”

We looked at him.

Nathan stared at his screen.

“That wasn’t the only transfer.”

“How many?”

“Seven.”

My chest tightened.

“Over what period?”

“The last forty-eight hours.”

Richard asked the only question that mattered.

“How much is gone?”

Nathan’s voice was barely audible.

“Eleven-point-six million dollars.”

Rachel stood.

“That’s impossible.”

I stared at her.

For once, I believed her.

Because she hadn’t known.

May you like

And that meant Marcus wasn’t her partner anymore.

He was robbing her too.
