Chapter 17 - Lily Sees Grandma

Carol saw Lily again in May.

Supervised.

Public park.

Thirty minutes.

Lily knew she could leave whenever she wanted.

Dr. Levin helped us prepare.

Carol arrived carrying nothing.

No gifts.

Good.

Lily stood beside me.

Carol stopped several feet away.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

“Hi, Grandma.”

Carol’s eyes filled.

She did not rush forward.

Also good.

“Can I give you a hug?”

Lily looked at me.

I smiled.

“You decide.”

Lily thought.

Then nodded.

Carol crouched.

Lily hugged her.

Only briefly.

Carol let go first.

That mattered.

They sat on a bench and talked about kindergarten.

Carol apologized once.

Simply.

“I’m sorry I didn’t make Thanksgiving safe for you.”

Lily nodded.

Then asked, “Are you still mad at Mommy?”

Carol glanced at me.

“No.”

“I was wrong to blame your mom.”

Lily considered that.

“Okay.”

Children can make forgiveness look shockingly simple when adults stop forcing them to carry the politics.

Twenty-eight minutes later, Lily said she wanted ice cream.

Visit over.

Carol did not protest.

In the parking lot, I stopped her.

“You did well.”

Her eyes filled.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t make me regret this.”

“I won’t.”

I believed she meant it.

That did not mean I lowered the boundary.

May you like

Trust grew exactly as it had been broken.

Through repeated moments.
