Chapter 10 - A Daughter Against Her Father

Federal agents surrounded Whitmore Farm before dawn.

Thermal imaging showed Charles and Victoria inside the main barn.

Victoria sat tied to a chair.

Charles held a pistol.

Nathan watched through a scope.

Grace stood beside him.

Catherine remained in an armored vehicle.

Negotiators tried.

Charles refused.

Then he requested Nathan.

Grace said.

“He wants control.”

“Yes.”

“Don’t give him emotional control just because he has physical control.”

Nathan looked at her.

“Where were you when I was learning business?”

“Working double shifts.”

He almost smiled.

Nathan entered the barn wearing a wire.

Charles looked exhausted.

Victoria’s face was bruised.

She lifted her head.

“Don’t give him anything.”

Charles struck the chair with the gun.

“Quiet.”

Nathan stopped.

“You hit her again and I leave.”

Charles stared.

“You won’t.”

“Try me.”

Nathan turned slightly.

Charles panicked.

“Wait.”

Nathan faced him again.

Good.

Grace was right.

Control.

Charles needed Nathan emotionally trapped.

Nathan refused.

“Ledger.”

Charles demanded.

“Federal custody.”

“Copies?”

“Everywhere.”

Charles’s face tightened.

Victoria laughed weakly.

“You lost, Dad.”

Charles snapped.

“You destroyed us.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You did.”

He pointed the gun toward her.

Nathan said.

“Charles.”

The gun shifted toward Nathan.

Better.

Keep it away from Victoria.

Nathan continued.

“Tell me about the plane.”

Charles laughed.

“Still chasing your father.”

“No.”

“I’m chasing facts.”

“That’s new for your family.”

“What did you do?”

Charles’s face changed.

“He was going to expose everything.”

“Elena.”

“Adam.”

“The judges.”

“The payments.”

“He wanted out.”

Nathan nodded.

“So Marcus sabotaged the plane.”

“Yes.”

“And you canceled the inspection.”

Charles swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Did you know the plane would crash?”

Silence.

Victoria whispered.

“Answer him.”

Charles looked at her.

“I knew there was a possibility.”

Victoria started crying.

“You told me Uncle Richard died because his pilot was reckless.”

“I was protecting you.”

Victoria laughed through tears.

“There it is.”

Grace watched from the command vehicle.

She heard every word.

Charles continued.

“Richard called me that morning.”

“He said he had contacted federal investigators.”

“He said he was bringing Adam home.”

“He told me the partnership was over.”

Nathan’s hands remained at his sides.

“What did you do?”

“I told him to take the plane.”

Nathan’s stomach turned.

“You chose the aircraft.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed time.”

“For what?”

“To move money.”

“Destroy files.”

“Protect Victoria.”

Victoria screamed.

“Stop using me!”

Charles flinched.

She continued.

“You did not protect me.”

“You taught me how to become you.”

Charles looked at her.

For one second the gun lowered.

Victoria kicked backward.

The chair slammed into his knees.

Nathan lunged.

Gunshot.

The bullet hit the roof.

Nathan drove Charles into a stall gate.

Victoria fell sideways.

Agents stormed.

Charles reached for the gun.

Grace entered behind tactical officers despite orders.

She went directly to Victoria.

She cut the restraints.

Victoria stared at her.

“You came.”

Grace said.

“Do not make me regret it.”

Victoria started crying.

Charles was handcuffed.

Catherine entered minutes later.

Victoria looked toward the barn door.

She saw her mother.

Everything stopped.

“Mom?”

Catherine covered her mouth.

Victoria stood.

Then froze halfway.

“You were alive.”

Catherine nodded.

“He told me you were dead.”

“I know.”

“He told me you left us.”

“I know.”

Victoria slapped her.

Catherine accepted it.

Then Victoria collapsed into her arms.

Grace looked away.

Nathan came beside her.

“You okay?”

Grace nodded.

“Just thinking.”

“What?”

“How many lives Charles separated by saying he was protecting someone.”

Nathan knew.

Elena and Richard.

Adam and Richard.

Catherine and Victoria.

Grace and Nathan.

Lily and Nathan.

The pattern was bigger than one crime.

It was a philosophy.

People were manageable pieces.

Nathan looked at Grace.

“I’m done living like that.”

She met his eyes.

“Good.”

Police searched the barn vault.

They found Charles’s archive.

One file labeled GRACE BENNETT.

Another labeled LILY.

Another.

NATHAN - SUCCESSION.

Inside was a future plan.

NATHAN-VICTORIA MARRIAGE TARGET.

FIRST WHITMORE-COLE CHILD WITHIN 24 MONTHS.

TRANSFER OF CONTROL AFTER BIRTH.

Grace stared.

“They planned your child with Victoria.”

Nathan felt sick.

Victoria read the page.

Her face changed.

“My father planned my pregnancy.”

Grace looked at her.

Victoria whispered.

“I thought at least that part of my life was mine.”

Grace said nothing.

What could she say?

Then Eli found another document.

MATERNAL INSTABILITY PACKAGE - BENNETT.

Grace took it.

A psychiatric evaluation written by a doctor she had never met.

Drug use allegations.

Neglect.

Paranoia.

Obsessive behavior.

Prepared months earlier.

Grace’s hands shook.

Nathan reached toward her.

Stopped.

Grace looked at his hand.

Then placed the file in it herself.

“They were going to make me sound crazy.”

Nathan nodded.

“Like Catherine.”

Victoria whispered.

“Like my mother.”

The women looked at each other.

Different victims.

Different participation.

Same machine.

Then Grace noticed a photograph clipped to the back.

Lily outside preschool.

Behind her stood Rachel.

Grace went still.

A handwritten note read.

R.S. ACTIVE.

Grace stared.

Rachel had not merely been paid to protect them.

She had been reporting directly to someone.

Nathan read the bottom line.

CONTINUE UNTIL FINAL TRANSFER.

Grace whispered.

“What final transfer?”

Eli’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“Lily’s security team lost visual.”

Nathan’s blood froze.

Grace grabbed him.

“What?”

Eli listened.

Then looked at her.

“Rachel picked Lily up from the safe house.”

May you like

Grace went white.

“She said you authorized it.”
