Chapter 6 - THE HUSBAND WHO NEVER LOVED ME

The next morning, Daniel appeared on television.
I was drinking coffee in Rachel's office when his face filled the screen.
He stood outside Harrington Global headquarters wearing a perfectly tailored gray suit.
His expression was solemn.
Behind him stood the company's public relations director.
A reporter asked about rumors of a family dispute.
Daniel sighed.
"My wife is going through a difficult emotional period."
I slowly lowered my cup.
He continued.
"Evelyn has experienced significant personal losses in her life, and I believe the pressure of the wedding has been overwhelming."
Rachel reached for the remote.
I stopped her.
"Leave it."
Another reporter asked whether the company was facing a leadership crisis.
Daniel smiled sadly.
"These are private family matters. I love my wife, and I hope she gets the help she needs."
I stared at the screen.
He had hit me.
He had tried to seize control of my assets.
And now he was telling the world I was unstable.
Rachel muttered something unprintable.
I almost smiled.
Then Daniel delivered the line that made me understand how far he was willing to go.
"I ask the public to respect Evelyn's privacy while our family supports her recovery."
Recovery.
As though I were ill.
As though the problem was my mind rather than his violence.
The broadcast ended.
Rachel turned toward me.
"We can issue a statement."
"No."
She frowned.
"Evelyn—"
"Not yet."
"He's creating a narrative."
"I know."
"And if we don't challenge it—"
"We will."
I stood.
"But not with words."
An hour later, the independent directors of Harrington Global received a confidential report from our forensic accounting team.
It detailed suspicious transfers totaling more than ninety million dollars.
It identified shell companies.
It traced payments to executives, consultants, and outside advisers.
And it included a recommendation for an immediate independent investigation.
By noon, the board had voted to suspend Charles Harrington's executive authority pending review.
Daniel was placed on administrative leave.
Their corporate accounts were restricted.
The company's lenders were notified through proper legal channels.
And every member of the Harrington family who had been using corporate resources for personal expenses suddenly discovered that those privileges were no longer guaranteed.
Margaret called me seventeen times.
I didn't answer.
Then she left a voicemail.
"You ungrateful little witch. After everything this family has done for you, this is how you repay us?"
I saved the recording.
At three in the afternoon, Daniel arrived at Rachel's office.
He demanded to see me.
Rachel refused.
He shouted.
He threatened.
Then he began crying.
I watched the security footage from an upstairs conference room.
The man who had humiliated me at breakfast was now standing in a public lobby begging for access to the woman he had called stupid.
I felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
Rachel entered the room.
"He's refusing to leave."
"Call security."
"They're already here."
I looked at the monitor.
Daniel had taken out his phone.
He was typing furiously.
A moment later, mine vibrated.
You are destroying everything we've built.
I stared at the message.
Then I typed a reply.
You built this on lies.
I sent it.
He read it immediately.
On the monitor, I watched his expression change.
His next message arrived seconds later.
You think you're innocent? Ask your father what he did to mine.
My heart stopped.
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
Rachel noticed my expression.
"What?"
I showed her.
She frowned.
"That's interesting."
"Why?"
"Because your father died eleven years ago."
I looked at the message.
Daniel knew that.
Of course he knew that.
He had attended memorial events with me.
He had held me when I cried about my father.
He had listened to stories about my childhood.
So why tell me to ask a dead man?
Unless he was trying to suggest something else.
I typed another message.
What are you talking about?
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he looked directly into the security camera.
And smiled.
Then he left.
Rachel stood beside me.
"He's trying to provoke you."
"Maybe."
"But?"
I looked at the screen.
"But he knows something."
That evening, Victoria Reed contacted us again.
This time, she agreed to meet.
The location was a private residence outside Philadelphia.
Rachel insisted on security.
I agreed.
We arrived just after sunset.
The house was small and surrounded by tall trees.
A woman opened the door.
She looked older than in the photograph, but I recognized her immediately.
Victoria Reed.
She stared at me.
Then covered her mouth.
"Oh, Evelyn."
I stepped inside.
She began crying.
"You look exactly like your mother."
I waited until she had composed herself.
Then I asked the question that had haunted me since finding my father's letter.
"What happened to him?"
Victoria looked at Rachel.
Then back at me.
"Your father discovered that Charles Harrington had been stealing from the company for years."
I nodded.
"We know about the transfers."
She shook her head.
"That was only the beginning."
My stomach tightened.
"What do you mean?"
"Charles wasn't just stealing money."
She sat down.
"He was using company subsidiaries to move money for people who couldn't afford to have their names attached to it."
Rachel leaned forward.
"Money laundering?"
Victoria nodded.
"Among other things."
I felt sick.
"My father found out?"
"Yes."
"And he threatened to expose Charles?"
"Not immediately. Jonathan wanted to protect the employees and investors. He was trying to force Charles out quietly."
"What happened?"
Victoria looked at me with unbearable sadness.
"Charles found out."
I gripped my hands together.
"Did he kill my father?"
She hesitated.
Then she said, "I can't prove that."
May you like
I stared at her.
"But I can prove that your father was alive when Charles told the world he was already dead."
