Chapter 10 - My Brother’s Five Million Dollars

I woke Nolan at 2:17 a.m.
I did not ease into it.
“Why did Richard Hale pay you five million dollars after Dad died?”
Nolan sat upright.
For the first time since he came home, I saw genuine shock.
“How do you know about that?”
The answer devastated me.
Not denial.
Recognition.
“It happened.”
“Yes.”
I stepped backward.
“Emily—”
“Don’t.”
He stood.
“Let me explain.”
“That is exactly what Derek would say.”
Pain crossed his face.
“Do not compare me to him.”
“Then don’t hide things like him.”
He exhaled.
“Dad had a life insurance structure tied to one of Hale’s companies.”
“Five million dollars?”
“Yes.”
“Why was it paid directly to you?”
“Because I was executor of one account.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“You were nineteen.”
“There it is again.”
“That is not an excuse.”
“No.”
“It’s context.”
“Then give me all of it.”
Nolan sat.
“The payment looked legitimate.”
“At first.”
“And later?”
“Later I discovered the policy shouldn’t have existed.”
My anger cooled slightly.
“What?”
“It was created six months before Dad died.”
“By Dad?”
“No.”
“Who?”
“Thomas Voss.”
My stomach tightened.
“He was already handling some of Dad’s corporate work.”
“Did you investigate?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“Voss claimed Dad authorized it.”
“Did you believe him?”
“No.”
“What did you do with the money?”
Nolan opened his laptop.
A trust statement.
The five million had never been spent.
It sat in an account under my name.
“You gave it to me?”
“I isolated it.”
“Why?”
“If the money was dirty, I didn’t want it mixed with mine.”
“That is not giving it to me.”
“No.”
He met my eyes.
“I was protecting evidence.”
“For nine years?”
“Yes.”
I wanted to believe him.
That frightened me.
“Why isn’t this in Northstar?”
“I didn’t know Northstar existed.”
I sat opposite him.
“Richard wants me to doubt you.”
“Obviously.”
“Which means he’s scared.”
“Yes.”
“Of what?”
“Us trusting each other.”
That answer landed.
Derek had isolated me gently for years.
Not obviously.
He never told me to stop seeing Nolan.
He simply made Nolan sound controlling.
Dismissive.
Emotionally unavailable.
Clara reinforced it.
Your brother means well.
He just doesn’t understand you like Derek does.
The manipulation was suddenly visible everywhere.
I looked at Nolan.
“Did Derek ever contact you privately?”
“Many times.”
“About what?”
“You.”
My stomach sank.
“He told me you felt pressured by me.”
“I never said that.”
“I know.”
“He said you wanted more independence.”
“I did.”
“That part was true.”
“But?”
“He exaggerated everything else.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because every time I challenged him, you defended him.”
I looked down.
He was right.
That hurt.
“Nolan.”
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry.”
His expression softened.
“Don’t apologize for being manipulated.”
“I ignored you.”
“You loved someone.”
“I thought I did.”
“You did.”
I looked up.
“What?”
“Your love was real.”
He spoke quietly.
“His intentions do not rewrite yours.”
For the first time since the airport, tears came without rage.
I wiped them quickly.
Then the bedroom door opened.
Derek stood there.
My entire body stiffened.
“How long have you been awake?” I asked.
He frowned.
“Just now.”
Maybe true.
Maybe not.
“What’s going on?”
“Couldn’t sleep.”
He looked at Nolan.
“You two arguing?”
Nolan answered.
“Family tradition.”
Derek smiled faintly.
Then came toward me.
“We should talk tomorrow.”
“About?”
“The wedding.”
My pulse shifted.
“What about it?”
He hesitated.
“I think we should move it up.”
Nolan’s eyes flicked toward mine.
I forced surprise.
“Move it up?”
“Friday.”
“That’s in four days.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
Derek took my hands.
“After the break-in, I realized I don’t want to wait.”
His eyes looked sincere.
That was his greatest talent.
“I want you to be my wife.”
Four days.
Richard was accelerating.
I squeezed Derek’s hands.
“That’s crazy.”
“Maybe.”
He smiled.
“Say yes.”
I looked at Nolan.
He gave me nothing.
The choice was mine.
Exactly as promised.
I turned back to Derek.
“Okay.”
His face transformed with relief.
Not joy.
Relief.
That told me everything.
“We’ll do it Friday.”
He kissed my forehead.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
The lie came easier now.
Derek returned to bed.
Once his door closed, Nolan whispered.
“Four days.”
“Yes.”
“You understand what you just did?”
“Yes.”
“We’re not ready.”
“Neither are they.”
He almost smiled.
Then his phone vibrated.
Meridian’s board meeting.
Nine o’clock.
Time to vote on stealing my property.
Nolan looked at me.
“You still want them to proceed?”
I thought about Dad.
About Clara.
About Thomas.
About Richard.
About Derek sleeping fifty feet away.
“Yes.”
The board voted at 9:14 a.m.
Seven directors approved the acquisition.
Two abstained.
One voted against.
At 9:16, Blue Crest submitted the fraudulent ownership transfer.
At 9:17, Nolan’s team froze the escrow.
At 9:18, Meridian received notice that Whitmore Family Holdings disputed the sale.
At 9:20, every director received a formal preservation order demanding they retain all communications.
At 9:23, Meridian’s stock began falling.
By 9:31, Derek’s phone was ringing nonstop.
He came running downstairs.
“What the hell is happening?”
Nolan calmly drank his coffee.
I pretended to be confused.
Derek stared at his phone.
Then at me.
And for one brief second, I saw something behind his eyes.
Not panic.
Recognition.
He knew exactly who had stopped the deal.
May you like
Me.
