Chapter 5 - HIS FATHER’S OFFER

Rachel stepped between Richard and my bed.
“You can leave.”
Richard ignored her.
He had spent thirty years in commercial real estate and had the kind of voice that expected rooms to obey him.
“Megan, I’m not here to fight.”
“You opened with a threat.”
“It wasn’t a threat.”
“You said Derek would destroy me.”
“I said I’m trying to prevent that.”
He looked toward Emily’s bassinet.
For a second, something human crossed his face.
Then it vanished.
“Congratulations.”
I couldn’t believe him.
“That’s what you have to say?”
“What would you like me to say?”
“I don’t know. Maybe ask if she’s healthy.”
“Is she?”
“Yes.”
“Then good.”
Rachel muttered, “Unbelievable.”
Richard tapped the envelope.
“Derek is extremely upset.”
“Derek had dinner plans.”
“He made a mistake.”
“He made about four thousand mistakes before that.”
“Marriage isn’t scored that way.”
“Mine is now.”
His jaw tightened.
He pulled out a chair.
“Come home.”
“No.”
“Let Derek see his daughter.”
“No.”
“You cannot keep a father away from his child.”
“He knew exactly where his child was going last night. A hospital. He just decided dinner mattered more.”
“Megan—”
“He handed me fifteen dollars.”
Richard closed his eyes briefly.
“I heard about the money.”
“Did he tell you about the ring?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He slid the envelope toward me.
Inside were several pages.
I didn’t touch them.
“What is that?”
“A temporary agreement.”
Rachel laughed sharply.
“Of course it is.”
Richard continued like she hadn’t spoken.
“You return to Columbus today. You and the baby can stay at the house while you and Derek work things out.”
“We’re not working things out.”
“If you insist on separating, the agreement creates boundaries.”
“What kind of boundaries?”
“Derek covers household expenses. You agree not to remove marital assets. You agree not to relocate the child without written consent.”
There it was.
I looked at him.
“How long have you had this drafted?”
Silence.
My stomach turned.
“How long?”
Richard’s eyes shifted.
“Derek called our attorney several weeks ago.”
Rachel whispered, “Before you left?”
Richard said nothing.
I felt cold all over.
“Why?”
“He was concerned.”
“About what?”
“Your emotional condition.”
I stared at him.
“My emotional condition.”
“You’ve been under stress.”
“I was pregnant.”
“You were making accusations.”
“What accusations?”
“About money.”
My pulse jumped.
“What about money?”
Richard stood.
“You should read the agreement.”
I grabbed the papers.
“No. You brought it. You explain it.”
He buttoned his coat.
“Megan, there are financial matters in a marriage that a spouse may not fully understand.”
Rachel stepped closer.
“What did Derek do?”
Richard looked at her.
“This is family business.”
“So is she.”
He turned back to me.
“I recommend you come home before you make decisions you can’t undo.”
He left.
The room stayed silent for several seconds.
Then Rachel grabbed the envelope.
We went through every page.
Page nine contained a sentence that made my skin crawl.
I would acknowledge that Derek had always exercised primary control over “joint financial assets” due to my “documented history of impulsive and emotionally driven spending.”
“Documented?” I whispered.
Rachel looked at me.
“Has anybody ever diagnosed you with anything?”
“No.”
“Have you ever had debt problems?”
“No.”
“Gambling?”
“No.”
“Shopping addiction?”
“No.”
I took out the folder from Rachel’s overnight bag.
Bank statements.
Transfers.
Credit card records.
Photographs.
I had gathered them because I knew Derek controlled our money.
But suddenly I saw them differently.
This wasn’t control.
It was preparation.
Then Rachel pulled out one statement I had never opened.
A line of charges ran down the page.
Hotels.
Jewelry.
Restaurants.
All on a credit card in my name.
I looked at the total balance.
$28,614.
My hands started shaking.
“I never opened this card.”
Rachel stared at me.
And in that moment, we both understood the same thing.
Derek hadn’t started planning for my departure after I left.
May you like
He had been preparing to make me look financially reckless long before I ever packed a bag.
