Chapter 11 - The Woman I Became

The divorce filing became official three days later.
I expected to feel devastated.
Instead, I felt tired.
Then hungry.
Then annoyed because I had forgotten to buy formula.
Life did not transform into a cinematic montage simply because I filed for divorce.
Hailey still woke at 1:40.
Then 4:15.
Laundry still accumulated.
The garbage still needed taking out.
Healing was irritatingly ordinary.
I started freelance design work again.
Two hours in the morning.
Another hour during Hailey’s afternoon nap.
At first, I earned almost nothing.
Then an old client contacted me.
Then another.
By the end of the month, I had enough work to remember the woman I had been before Liam’s life consumed mine.
Not exactly the old Emma.
A newer version.
More cautious.
Less eager to be chosen.
Carol continued seeing Hailey.
I allowed it because she had never defended Liam’s behavior.
One afternoon, while Hailey slept in her arms, Carol said, “He’s going to therapy.”
I looked up from my laptop.
“Good.”
“He asked whether you knew.”
“Now I do.”
“I told him not to use therapy as a message to you.”
That surprised me.
“Thank you.”
Carol smiled sadly.
“I’m learning too.”
“About what?”
“That helping your child avoid consequences isn’t the same as helping your child.”
I closed the laptop.
“He’s your son.”
“I know.”
“You’re allowed to love him.”
“I do.”
She looked at Hailey.
“But I can love him without lying for him.”
I wished more people understood that.
The financial investigation continued.
Liam returned part of the money.
The remaining funds were frozen.
His employer terminated him.
No dramatic security escort.
No public scene.
Just a letter.
Employment ended.
Access revoked.
Benefits terminated.
He called me that night.
“I lost my job.”
“I heard.”
“From who?”
“Attorneys talk.”
He exhaled.
“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”
“Find another job.”
“You say that like it’s easy.”
“No.”
I shifted Hailey against my shoulder.
“I say it like it’s necessary.”
“Can I come over?”
“No.”
“Emma.”
“No.”
“I just want to see my daughter.”
“Your scheduled visit is Saturday.”
“I need someone.”
That almost broke something open in me.
Not because I loved him.
Because two years earlier, I would have run toward that sentence.
Now I heard what it really meant.
He needed emotional shelter from consequences he created.
“I hope you call your therapist.”
Silence.
“You’ve changed.”
“Yes.”
He meant it as criticism.
I accepted it as a compliment.
Saturday’s visit went well.
Liam arrived on time.
No extravagant toy.
No staged photographs.
He held Hailey and read her a board book.
For forty minutes, he seemed like the man I once thought he was.
Then, as he prepared to leave, he said, “Maybe someday we can fix us.”
There it was.
I looked at him.
“No.”
His expression fell.
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
“People survive affairs.”
“This wasn’t just an affair.”
“I know.”
“You used my identity.”
“I know.”
“You planned a financial exit.”
“I know.”
“You were prepared to let me answer for it.”
His eyes lowered.
“I know.”
“Then why would you think I’d come back?”
His voice was small.
“Because we loved each other.”
I considered that.
“I loved who I thought you were.”
He looked up.
“And who am I?”
“That’s something you have to figure out without me.”
I closed the door.
It hurt.
But pain was no longer the same as doubt.
That night, Rachel texted.
We had not spoken in weeks.
I thought you should know something.
My stomach sank.
Apparently, my life still had more chapters.
What?
Her response:
Liam contacted me.
I expected anger.
Instead I felt exhaustion.
What did he want?
Three dots.
Then:
He asked me to tell investigators that you knew about Northstar.
I stared at the phone.
There it was.
Even now.
Even after confession.
Liam was still trying to rewrite the story.
I forwarded the message to Danielle.
Then I did something I had never done before.
I blocked Liam’s personal number.
From that point forward, he could contact me only through the parenting application or attorneys.
May you like
For the first time in two years, he no longer had direct access to my peace.
