Chapter 12 - The Father Who Tried to Tell the Truth

Thomas Bennett died on November 6, 2008.

The official cause was cardiac arrest.

He was sixty-three.

He had a history of hypertension.

And his death had never been considered suspicious.

Until Evelyn discovered a payment made from a Bennett-controlled account to Dr. Samuel Whitaker three days afterward.

The amount was $250,000.

The invoice described it as a consulting fee.

But no consulting agreement existed.

Reyes requested the original medical records.

Whitaker was still recovering in the hospital.

He had retained counsel.

And through that counsel, he indicated he was willing to cooperate.

His statement changed everything.

Thomas Bennett had discovered that Eleanor was using foundation money to fund a network of shell companies.

He had also learned that Mercy's daughter was alive.

He wanted to acknowledge the child.

He wanted to correct the financial records.

And he wanted to leave Eleanor.

According to Whitaker, Thomas had suffered a medical emergency shortly after confronting his wife.

Eleanor had summoned Whitaker to the mansion.

By the time he arrived, Thomas was unconscious.

Whitaker claimed Eleanor delayed calling emergency services.

He also admitted that he later altered portions of the medical documentation under pressure.

He denied causing Thomas's death.

Investigators made no immediate conclusion about whether Thomas had died naturally, whether the delay had contributed, or whether a crime had occurred.

But the financial records gave them a reason to investigate.

And Evelyn had found something else.

A trust established by Thomas shortly before his death.

It named an unidentified beneficiary.

A daughter born in March 1998.

The trust had never distributed funds.

Its existence had been concealed behind layers of legal paperwork.

Evelyn stared at the document.

For the first time since meeting her, she looked completely overwhelmed.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

Katherine reached for her hand.

"Because they were afraid of what you would become if you knew."

Evelyn shook her head.

"I spent my whole life thinking my parents abandoned me."

Her voice cracked.

"I thought there was something wrong with me."

"No," Katherine whispered.

"Your mother fought for you."

Evelyn looked at the photograph of Mercy.

Then she wiped her eyes.

"What happened to her?"

Nobody answered.

Because that was still the question we couldn't solve.

Until Sullivan entered the room with a sealed forensic report.

The search team had recovered human remains from a concealed section beneath the former greenhouse.

The remains had been transferred for examination.

There was no confirmed identification yet.

But investigators had found something nearby.

A silver necklace.

Katherine recognized it immediately.

"Mercy's."

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Katherine nodded.

"She wore it every day."

I stared at the photograph.

The necklace had a small heart-shaped pendant.

Inside were two initials.

E.B.

Evelyn began crying.

May you like

And in that moment, I realized that uncovering the truth was not going to feel like victory.

For some of us, it would feel like losing someone we had only just found.
