Chapter 14 - WHY ARTHUR CHOSE ME BEFORE I MET HIS SON

The answer was buried in Victor's old files.
Not the Vance files.
Mine.
Rachel found them in a private archive belonging to her father.
A background investigation.
On me.
Vivian Carter.
Age twenty-three.
Employment history.
University.
Parents.
Debt.
Professional references.
Even an old photograph from my college graduation.
I stared at it until anger replaced confusion.
"Arthur investigated me."
Henry nodded on the video screen.
"He investigated several auditors."
"Why?"
"He knew Eleanor had influence everywhere."
"Then why choose me?"
Victor answered that himself after federal agents arranged a call.
He looked terrible.
Older.
Ashamed.
But alive.
"Your father."
I frowned.
"My father was a mechanic."
"I know."
"So?"
Victor looked at me.
"Daniel Carter repaired Arthur's first delivery trucks."
My mouth opened.
"What?"
"Before Vance Consolidated existed."
My father had died when I was seventeen.
He rarely talked about wealthy clients.
"He knew Arthur?"
"Very well."
I sat back.
Victor continued.
"They were friends when they were young."
"That's impossible."
"Why?"
"Arthur Vance was a billionaire."
"Not in 1978."
I stared.
Victor almost smiled.
"He was a twenty-six-year-old contractor with two trucks and more ambition than money."
My father would have been twenty-four.
"They started together?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"Arthur borrowed money."
"From my father?"
"Three thousand dollars."
I laughed from disbelief.
"My father never had three thousand dollars."
"He did after selling his motorcycle."
That sounded exactly like him.
"Arthur repaid it?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"Many times over."
"Then why were we broke when my father died?"
Victor looked away.
Something inside me tightened.
"What?"
"Arthur offered Daniel money repeatedly."
"And?"
"He refused."
Of course he did.
My father had been stubborn to the point of insanity.
Victor continued.
"When Arthur suspected Eleanor was stealing, he wanted someone with no loyalty to the Vance name."
"He picked his old friend's daughter."
"Yes."
I felt tears press behind my eyes.
My father had died thinking I was still figuring out my life.
He never saw me become an investigator.
But Arthur did.
"Did my father know?"
"No."
"Did Arthur contact him?"
"Daniel died before Arthur began the investigation."
I looked at the background file.
"This feels invasive."
"It was."
"Did you do it?"
"Yes."
I laughed bitterly.
"You investigated me before becoming my mentor."
"Yes."
"Then hired me."
"Yes."
"Was any part of my career real?"
Victor looked genuinely hurt.
"Every part."
"You put me in that firm."
"I opened a door."
"You trained me."
"Because you were excellent."
"You fed me Vance documents."
"Eventually."
I stared at him.
"You used me."
"Yes."
At least he didn't lie.
"Why didn't you simply tell me?"
"Because by then I was compromised."
"By Eleanor."
"By my own choices."
Victor looked directly into the camera.
"I was ashamed."
"Not enough to stop."
"No."
"That's the problem with shame."
He nodded.
"Yes."
I looked at Henry.
"Release the ledger."
"I already did."
Detective Reed received the encrypted archive minutes later.
Within twenty-four hours, subpoenas exploded across banks, shell companies, law firms, and Vance subsidiaries.
Martin Kessler became a fugitive.
Eleanor hired three criminal defense attorneys.
The press learned enough to smell blood.
VANCE FAMILY TRUST UNDER FEDERAL REVIEW.
VANCE MATRIARCH DENIES WRONGDOING.
QUESTIONS SURROUND LATE BILLIONAIRE'S ESTATE.
My name remained out of most reports.
For forty-eight hours.
Then someone leaked it.
DIVORCED WIFE AT CENTER OF VANCE TRUST BATTLE.
My photograph appeared everywhere.
Some articles called me a whistleblower.
Others called me a disgruntled ex-wife.
One tabloid called me "the $186 million mother."
I hated that one.
Then the comments started.
Gold digger.
Trap baby.
Convenient pregnancy.
Eleanor's original story returned.
This time, millions of strangers repeated it.
I almost deleted every app on my phone.
Then a woman emailed me.
I didn't know her.
Her name was Claire Lawson.
Henry's sister.
She wrote only four lines.
I spent sixteen years believing my brother abandoned us.
You found the truth.
People will say terrible things because terrible stories are easy.
Keep going.
So I did.
Julian held a press conference.
Against Laura's advice.
I watched from the protected apartment.
He stood alone behind a podium.
No Eleanor.
No lawyers beside him.
He looked exhausted.
"My former wife, Vivian Carter, did not cheat on me."
Reporters shouted.
Julian lifted a hand.
"The claims about her infidelity were false."
More shouting.
"I allowed those claims to remain unchallenged."
He swallowed.
"That was cowardly."
I stared.
"I also participated in financial pressure during our divorce."
The room erupted.
Laura, standing off camera, probably wanted to kill him.
Julian continued.
"I believed I was protecting Vivian from a threat connected to my family."
He looked directly into the cameras.
"I was wrong."
His voice tightened.
"Protection without honesty is control."
My throat closed.
He continued.
"Vivian is the mother of my son."
Flashbulbs exploded.
"She is also one of the most ethical people I have ever known."
I looked away.
"And if the evidence shows members of my family committed crimes, I will cooperate fully."
A reporter shouted, "Does that include Eleanor Vance?"
Julian's face changed.
"Yes."
Another shouted, "Do you believe she's responsible for Arthur Vance's death?"
Julian took a long breath.
"I believe Arthur deserves the truth."
Then he left.
I cried again.
I was getting tired of crying.
That night, Julian texted.
I DIDN'T DO IT FOR FORGIVENESS.
I replied.
GOOD.
He answered.
I DID IT BECAUSE IT WAS TRUE.
For the first time in months, I believed him.
Then Detective Reed called.
His voice was urgent.
"We found Martin."
My pulse jumped.
"Alive?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
"Airport."
"Trying to leave?"
"Canada."
I stood.
"Did he have anything?"
Reed went silent.
"What?"
"He had a passport."
"So?"
"Not his."
My skin prickled.
"Whose?"
"Samuel Hale's."
May you like
I stared toward the window.
Then Reed added, "And Arthur Vance's original bottle of heart medication."
